I'm more than a little late to the discussion but I would just like to mention Is there life out there? One of the epic improvisations off of The Great Deceiver box set. Really, that collection solidified my love for crimson.
Two great KC songs where we get to hear Fripp at his best:
Cirkus, from Lizard. The acoustic guitar work on this song...the manner in which it provides texture to the song proper...is amazingly amazingly amazing.
Then check out the guitar solo on LITA Part One, which solo to this day makes no sense to me but is still one of my favorite guitar solos by any guitarist. It addles my already-addled brain.
This. But some of his best playing can also be heard on Red, Starless and Bible Black, and In the Wake of Poseidon.
The audio is a second ahead of the video, but I love this performance. The first couple of minutes are a good example of Fripp's genius conceptual atmospheric playing. He saves the brain melting stuff for when it really counts. He was best at that.

Fripp IS amazing, you bunch of yule logs. And no, his best work wasn't with Belew. Try all the Crimso' that went before. I guess he's an acquired taste for you, and that's okay. Most prog has a way of being like that. By the way - RED!
Fripp has often said that his best work comes from being a sideman; he cites Sylvain's Gone to Earth as a good example.
One of the things that drove home his amazing technique (to me, anyway) was listening to various YouTube guitarists trying in futility to replicate one of his best-known (and most-cited) works:
(That guy does the beginning OK, at least.)
There were at one time several more videos like this, but none of the guys came close to the right speed and/or accuracy.
Never judge Crimson by its studio albums. The live work is almost always better, sometimes vastly so.

^ Wondering the same thing. Maybe he's implying that the band would scoff at the statement that their live work is better than the studio work. This is just a guess. I'm lost too.
