This the normal sort of dictionary/encyclopedia definition:

Noun1.progressive rock - a style of rock music that emerged in the 1970s; associated with attempts to combine rock with jazz and other forms; intended for listening and not dancing

However, not a great deal of use to excite people is it?

So...how about, the greatest combination of art, music, and poetry known to modern man?

May I suggest replacing "(facepalm)" with "Uh... well, yeah... something like that; why don't you better come to see us and see for yourself? You're going to like it!"

That's a different thing, my friend! When recruiting musicians for a prog band, you want to recruit only musicians who know what prog is and like it!!

there are many other forms of music that could answer these criteria.

The emphasis is on the greatest. Many others could, of course, come close, but they wouldn't be the greatest, would they?

Retro-progressive music with liberal-conservative lyrics. I use that description myself.

Oh but no, I learned that expression from people on PA who don't bother explaining in too many words the music they like. LOL
