In Finland in the 70s a very popular pop/rock band was called Coitus Int. Edited by Logos - July 09 2007 at 12:54 |

Oi! mits off the Biccies!
Creators of such classics as Dickie Davies Eyes, Time Flies By When You're The Driver Of A Train (inc. the immemorable line: Be careful with that spliff Eugene, it causes condensation) and I Left My Heart In Papworth General, Joy Division Oven Gloves, We Built This Village On A Trad. Arr. Tune, Tending The Wrong Grave For 23 Years, Paintball's Coming Home, Eno Collaboration, Everything's AOR, Styx Gig (Seen By My Mates Coming Out Of A), The Light At The End Of The Tunnel (Is The Light Of An Oncoming Train) and It's Cliched To Be Cynical At Christmas.
and if it wasn't for Julian Cope's Teardrop exploding we wouldn't have had Echo and The Bunnymen.... okay, I'll give you that one. Edited by darqdean - July 09 2007 at 17:49 |

I always thought the name Skinny Puppy was somewhat silly.
Right Said Fred (What exactly was said that was right?)
Duran Duran? (Wasn't 1 Duran enough?)
I could probably name about 1000 different HipHop/Rap names that are extremely stupid but then I'd be wasting valuable keystrokes which could go towards better uses.

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side. - Hunter S. Thompson

My nightmare band!
There are also quite silly names in the field of psychedelia, like THE CHOCOLATE WATCH BAND or STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK. Edited by Eetu Pellonpää - July 11 2007 at 02:11 |

There are a number of Japanese punk bands with bizzare names such as Mr. Children, Bump of Chicken, and The Piss. As for English speaking bands, Panic! At the Disco and Clap Your Hands say Yeah are the worst names

These names are pretty good, in my opinion. Panic! At the Disco's music, however, is completely lifeless and utterly boring. I haven't heard the Japanese bands. |

Yep, good stuff indeed! Probably the trend was then to give an impression how "far out" or "stoned" they are.
The Chocolate Watch Band appeared in a cult movie "Riot on Sunset Strip", which would be a fun film to see. Apparently it is not yet released on a DVD or even a VHS? There's a really brutal performance from them on that one, the tune is called "Sitting There Standing". The singer really sees things which other people don't! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iSP7ytIo_M Later they did two IMO quite sophisticated pscyhdelic albums with more imagination used, as that song is quite basic 60's R'n'B. ^^^ That's definitely one of the weirder names (and pronunciations) of a band that I've heard, but their music is so damn catchy and groovy...

Duran Duran are named after the angel in the movie "Barbarella" starring Jane Fonda. The actual spelling of the name is "Durand Durand" though, but the "d" is not pronounced, so probably the band thought that "Duran Duran" is the right spelling. |

Slightly off topic, but I do recall falling about laughing when my mate, Chris, being a 15 year old who had just seen the Woodstock movie for the first time, announced that he was going to buy a "Country Fish & The Joe Boys" album.

Lynryd Skynryd comes to mind.
The Flaming Lips. It's a Beautiful Day. (great band, though) CCR. Just a stupid, stupid name. And Hootie and the Blowfish was just too stupid for words, and so was their music. They had more than the alloted 15 minutes of fame. Good riddance. Hope you saved your money, fellas. |

I think that must be A.C., which is an abbreviation of "anal c**t".
