Steely Dan Prog-jazz-blues band

There have probably been others who've said this but I believe it is a huge oversight not to have Steely Dan listed the Prog Archives. Their music has all the qualities of great prog: Incredible musicianship, intelligent thought-provoking lyrics, creative arrangements, odd time signatures, music which has broken boundaries and set a bench mark for that type of music.
Come on PA folk. Give the band the credit they deserve. They are truly a PROGRESSIVE band.
They should be signed up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steely Dan, Prog-related?

I wanted a general opinion on Steely Dan and progarchives. What are the chances of Steely Dan being submitted as a Prog-related band? I will admit that I am a HUGE fan, so I am extremely biased. But I do feel that Steely Dan shares a lot of the same qualities that are characterstic of progressive rock. I don't mean to bore anyone, but here are some reasons why I thought that SD could possibly make it onto PA. First off, they have NEVER written a love song. The topics of their songs are... considering the new emphasis by the owners considering the expansion of the site.. they are not prog .. I know it.

but Prog Releated.

what do you all think.... I'm not adding them.. I have real prog groups I'm working on. Just curious as to thoughts with the way the site is now and the direction we are to take it.

Steely Dan at Nokia Theater
Posted: 13 July 2006 at 16:24
Having always loved their quirky style of jazz-tinged rock but never seeing them in person, I eagerly anticipated their show in the intimate and quality-sound environs of the Nokia Theater in Grand Prairie, Texas last night. I was not disappointed in the least. The four-piece horn section was top-notch and the other musicians were exemplary. Tight doesn't come close to describing how they worked as a band. Standouts were the excellent guitarist Jon Harrington, who handled the difficult-to-reproduce... View%20Post

Easily one of my favorite bands. The first time I heard the Dan on theCountdown to Ecstasy album, I thought it was ok, but not great. But I gave it some time, and soon enough I was digging out all my parents' otherDan albums: Katy Lied, Pretzel Logic, The Royal Scam, vynil pressings of Aja and Gaucho, and I went on to buy Can't Buy a Thrill for myself. I absolutely love this band. It takes serious genius to make complex jazz into million-selling pop. The music hooks you in, it's catchy... View%20Post

Prog Fans and Steely Dan

My CD collection is probably 90% prog music, but one of my favorite groups of all time are the jazz-pop masters Steely Dan.

They are perhaps the only group since the Beatles to so effortlessly buck convention from within convention. They were able to allow virtuosity and creativity in their songs which were consistently successful singles and top 10 albums. Plus, their lyrics are great. "When black friday comes, I'm gonna find myself a hole, and lay down in it till I satisfy my... View%20Post

Clap I've been introducing Raff to Steely Dan.  So far, a BIG thumbs up for The Royal Scam Clap, not so thumbs up for Gaucho Angry, and she liked Katy Lied. Big%20smile Aja is next up...

I think Gaucho gets a lot of criticism. It's actually been a while since I've listened to it, but this album was a transition to a more restrained sound. It's still one of my favorites (and Bernard Purdie's shuffle groove on "Babylon Sisters" is perfection), but I would take Royal Scam or Aja over it any day.

I love the Dan. Can't Buy a Thrill and Aja are my favorites, but Pretzel Logic and and Katy Lied are awesome as well. I practically grew up listening to them, but it wasn't until a few years ago I took to listening to them on my own accord. I got to see them on tour last summer, which was pretty much awesome.

I love the 'studio/session' era when only the best in the music business played on their albums and even then.... Fagen and Becker would put them through 20 takes to perfect every single damn song hahhahha.  Consider me a huge fan.  Got Aja as a kid by mistake from Columbia House when I forget to send the frickin card in and it was the selection of the month.  Loved it and have been a fan ever since. Still have that LP, scratched as hell as it is LOL
