Okay, I am probably going to get untold amounts of crap for suggesting this, but I think Mudvayne deserves a spot in the tech metal/extreme metal category, or at least prog related. These guys are more than just another metal band in my opinoin, especially when it comes to beat and time changes in thier songs. Anyone else agree?

This has been suggested before, I can see where you are coming from but my answer would be NO. They include some more complex time signatures but don't do anything far enough off the main-stream to be labled prog: no crazy soloes nothing overly complex, nothing special in their melody, no classical/jazz influence etc.

Just being outside of just the normal thing isn't prog. I have an issue when people want to call a band prog just because they're a little different then the popular rock/metal affiliates.

As I have an issue with Bands who label themselves as prog when their songs are completely normal and standard 4/4 but 10 minutes long. (they exist) |

I apologize, its just that I've cracked up laughing at the last 30 suggestions for the archives. Maybe we can make a category for Mudvayne and Gino Vanelli while were at it? Come to think of it, Queen Latifah was pretty prog too!

A good example of this would be Neu! Still, every other track they have that doesn't have a motorik beat is pretty prog if you ask me. I also disagree with the Mudvayne addition. They're just not up to prog standards. |

Wow. Next thing you know, they'll add Blind Guardian.
At least I can take some solace in the fact that I don't think Mike likes Mudvayne and they will thus not be added. Edited by Gamemako - December 13 2007 at 02:09 |

Mudvayne had their moments specially on LD50, but no, they won't fit here.

The implication of your second paragraph here is disrespectful. Our collaborators work with impunity to add bands who they consider fit here, regardless of personal taste.

Mudvayne is certainly complicated at times, math metal perhaps if only on their first CD LD50 (which is on my top 50 llst
![]() They really only break the mold in terms of time sigs and riffing patterns. Lyrically they fail to impress, they dont use any incredibly different song structure/composition from most rock bands and arent particularly achieved at their respective instruments (though i love their bassist and his interaction with the drummer- really cool rhythm section) poooossssibly prog related but even thats a real stretch. i think they're better off off the archives. EDIT - seriously though. . . Blind Guardian? ![]() Edited by keiser willhelm - December 13 2007 at 04:31 |

Lapse of judgment. I can't help but wonder why Mike insists that Mirror Mirror is "proggy" with its verse-chorus structure, simple 4/4 time signature, blending of power metal and power metal, and ho-hum syncopation (look guys, we discovered sixteenth notes!). ![]() //EDIT: Back to Mudvayne, they're just not prog at all. I mean... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Qw7-NCFbog Yeah guys, prog! ![]() Edited by Gamemako - December 13 2007 at 04:44 |

"blending of power metal and power metal" ... not sure what you mean by that. ![]() What makes Nightfall a standout album is the intricate blend of Folk/Medieval music and Power Metal, the massive layering of tracks (vocals, guitars), the epic concept and the complex arrangements. Mirror Mirror is indeed not very complex in terms of structure ... but prog is not about trying to avoid 4/4 at all cost, and it's only one track of the album. |

OK people, not a Blind Guardian discussion thread....
As for Mudvayne, LD 50 was a tight record, and I especially like the little fractal music interludes between some songs, and "Death Blooms" is one of my favorite nu-metal songs (placing right after most of the Deftones catalog).
LD 50 would have been a better record had they just run with that sound and experimented with it more... if they added more atmospherics or technical passages and dropped some of the angst.
instead, they took to writing radio singles and ended up sounding like a watered down Pantera (if that's even possible). YEAH SO f**kING DETERMINED YEAH YEAH
![]() cmon. Give me more riffs like the opening of Death Blooms and then we'll talk.
