This is A Rum Tale of Good Captain Clack, A Salty Dog who sailed his ship, the Homburg, Beyond the Pale of Ireland, charting a Pilgrim's Progress across the vast Atlantic Ocean. The weather omens were good, and the captain always believed there's Something Magic about setting off on a long voyage when the sun Shines On Brightly upon white fluffy clouds glowing A Whiter Shade of Pale.  He carried with him a Souvenir of London from the Grand Hotel to remind him of Home. He'd always had An Old English Dream to follow the route of the Conquistadors to the New World in search of gold, when often all they discovered was Fool's Gold, and Quite Rightly So. Before leaving, the captain said The Long Goodbye to his Simple Sister Mary and wished her Toujours L'amour. She kept the Home Fires burning while he was Bringing Home the Bacon away at sea. His loyal crew stocked the ship with a Kaleidoscope of Exotic Birds and Fruit baskets and All This and More besides for the long voyage ahead. The crew relieved Boredom by entertaining themselves with Whaling Stories and they all remembered the cautionary tale of The Wreck of the Hesperus, when a disastrous Power Failure led to the ship hitting rocks, and the Hesperus' crew were tossed helplessly Into the Flood and left Holding On to the ship's wreckage for dear life, when even those As Strong as Samson were About to DieCry

All songs in Blue Highlights by Procol Harum

This was certainly A RUM TALE as it gave my innards a warm feeling to read this latest and best album title story.
My Christmas SHINES ON BRIGHTLY now! Psychedelic Paul is one great SOUVENIR OF LONDON (well, the UK, anyway) that I plan to keep in my treasure chest of Prog forever. And it's an OLD ENGLISH DREAM to meet him someday. He keeps my HOME FIRES BURNING with these musical yarns. I'll be HOLDING ON until next time, to see what tantalizing phrases he has in store for us. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night! (full of great Prog music)

Your warm generous praise is making me blush again, so I definitely won't be A Whiter Shade of Pale this Christmas My Love. Embarrassed Heart

I credit Procol with whetting my taste for "serious" music, which was just a small leap to prog, but I wouldn't count them as a favourite anymore.  Here is my list

1)  Procol Harum
2)  Salty Dog
3)  Grand Hotel
4)  Home

can't go further...all the other 70s albums have good songs but as albums, not so much.  And, as far as shine on brightly goes (that abominable epic), it's a lucky thing that that didn't kill prog right there in its baby tracks Tongue

1. Shine on Brightly
2. Home
3. A Salty Dog
4. Broken Barricades
5. Procol Harum (with Whiter Shade and Homburg)
6. Exotic Birds and Fruit
7. Grand Hotel

Hah, Procol, they were really great until 1974.
The Live in Edmonton was a kinda sinfall, despite being due to the strong song material an enjoyable album, and after Exotic Birds the band lost their momentum, the ideas grew thinner, they lost most of their unusual kind of composing.

These 7 albums are all very close qualitywise.

Ok I'm a little late coming into this but I just joined Progarchives yesterday. Love the little nautical tale on top. Interesting to see how many Procol Harum songs have themes related to the sea and exploration. Without wanting to open a PANDORA'S BOX, my top 7 albums are:
1. A Salty Dog
2. Procol Harum
3. Shine on Brightly
4. Grand Hotel
5. Broken Barricades
6. In Concert with Edmonton etc.
7. Exotic Birds & Fruits
