Stumbled across this on YouTube. Nobody ever seems to talk about the Strawbs and it's a damn shame. They had a run in the first half of the 70s on par with any of the contemporaries that went on to be considered legends of Prog (as far as I'm concerned they had the same number of truly great albums as Yes). Basically, what I'm saying is: watch the video, go to their artist page, and then check out more of their work.

I've always enjoyed the Strawbs...especially Grave, Bursting, Hero, and Ghosts....I'll ck out the video.

Sorry Anton, I forgot to say thanks. Nice video indeed, I haven't listened to any Strawbs for quite a while, and that album is simply a bliss! You've encouraged me to dig those albums out now.
Damn I love Cousins voice, dare I say I like it more than Gabriel's or Anderson's.

I love Benedictus!!! Sorry slow on the uptake......I too love the Strawbs, especially this era. I think my personal faves are Deep Cuts, Ghosts and From the Witchwood.......good grief what a classic that last one is.I was lucky to see them live in 97 and 98......Cousins voice has faded and it was incredible having Oliver/Adam Wakeman presentApprove I think it is safe to say Cousins is a poet

I have that vid on dvd  along with a Live in Japan 1975 thing.
         I love Bursting At The Seams and Nomadness very much.

Just saw that, thanks!  I was hooked on The Strawbs when I first saw them on the US TV show "Midnight Special," when they performed "Hero & Heroine" and "Round and Round" live.  H&H was the first song I taught myself to play bass to!  

John Hawken is easily one of the best keyboard players in prog rock history, using keys as diverse as harpsichord ("Ghosts"), Mellotron etc.   He was kind enough to correspond with me via email a while back.

Strawbs strong point is songwriting, and I think they're one of the best prog bands from that point of view.
