I just bought Novalis "Vielleicht bist du ein clown?" and I really liked the album, so I decided to see how it was rated on Novalis page and saw that it was actually quite low, so I'm wondering which Novalis album is the most similiar to this album.

I can't really put my finger on what I liked about the album, but I pretty much experienced it as a better version of Supertramp. One thing I liked about the album was that they pretty much mixed the catchy side of prog and put in some heavy elements. So, once again, my questions is whenever they did another album like this, or if everything they created is in the same vein as "Vielleicht bist du ein clown?".

Keep in mind this is the only thing I have heard with Novalis.

In my opinion Novalis is far better than Supertramp. Smile
"Vielleicht bist du ein clown?" is quite unique in their discography. "Brandung" has some similarities because of Fred Mühlböck's vocals, it's even proggier, but songs are less memorable.

"Novalis" (1975) and "Sommerabend" (1976) are essential, though all albums from 1973 - 1980 are good (I have not heard "Flossenengel" yet).

I'll definitely second those two, great albums. Haven't heard 'Vielleicht bist du ein clown' to discuss how similar they are though, sorry to say.

I really liked Sommerabend, more than the self-titled one.  But I've never heard the  Clown one, so I can't really compare them.

'Vielleicht bist du ein clown' is probably rated lower here because of radio-friendly tunes. But songs are well written and memorable. Excellent instrumental "City Nord" is one of my favourite Novalis tracks.

Yea, that's what I pretty much figured. Because the album didn't exactly sound like something all prog fans will enjoy, but I also figured that there has to be someone here who liked it and can give me a good recommendation. I guess will buy the self-titled next, seems like it's pretty much a safe bet.

I share the creativity of the group into two periods, before the "Bandung (1977)" and after, not because of better or worse, but because the music was different. Closest to the "Vielleicht bist du ein clown?" in my opinion the album "Bandung", though subsequent albums performed in the same manner. Pearls of the band, this albums "Sommerabend (1976)" and "Novalis (1975)."

clown is probably my fave novalis album, yes radio friendly but proggy and better quality than Brandung IMO.  I also enjoyed Augenblicke which has several absolutely beautiful pieces,  and Flossenengel.   I think Fred injected muscularity that was needed after the pleasant but overly languid Sommerabend.

It would really be great to know what this band was singing about!

I know a few songs are from the poet Novalis, but it would be great to have
a Novalis Wiki.

You know, Prog when international is getting to be what I always said made
classical music so much better for one's education than pop/rock music.
It has such a great body of text alongside with it, that it gives you a great
education being into classical.  International prog is a bit like that.
