Embryo's first six albumls were absolutely great jazz-rock/fusion with just enough ethnic influences to make them stand out from the rest of the JR/F

Embryo are a top band, else artists like Charlie Mariano or Mel
Waldron, both top-notch jazz musicians, wouldn't have played with them
repeatedly. It was never their aim to play mere jazz-rock though, and they are definitely in the wrong department there and should be moved. Calling Embryo's music "jazz-rock" is way off the mark. And you are all definitely NOT Embryo experts, else you would consider "Embryo's Reise" their best work.

Been listening a lot to Embryo in my studio lately. I think their two
first jazzy psychrock albums are among the best the best in its genre.
I only got their first six first + Embryo's Reise, and think Father, Son.. is a little weaker than the rest. Rocksession is a very fine, even great jazzfusion album, but one of the least uniquesounding of the ones I got. Reise is probably my overall favorite, and Road to Asia and Farid are two of the most successful fusions of eh... jazzrock and middle-eastern music I know of. Christian Burchard's also one of my favorite percussionists.
Got a Roman Bunka solo Mein Kopf ist ein Schlafendes Auto. You can really hear that the 80's have started, mostly in a good way. Great fun! And the Bunka/Burchard Kenneth Wells 73-74 project Sadja (never officially released). Eight great improvisations. All short and thight. First track's a real floorfiller. Sadja.

The album title actually is "Dein Kopf ist ein Schlafendes Auto". It is one of my very favourite albums; the solo he does in "Heartbeats" is simply fantastic. Bunka is a great guitar player; his name should be known a lot better.

Reise is not really reflecting their better period I would say.... Which is definitely their ethnic jazz-rock period of Steig Haus, We Keep On etc.....(ie: 72 until 76)
The Reise album came after trips all over the mid east and Himalaya, released in 79. It's excellent (the only one I would recommend past Bad Heads
BTW: I'm listening at For Eva right now.... Mal Waldren , Burchard, Meid and more. >>> standard jazz ala Lionel Hampton.....

Listening to their second Embryo's Rache. Can't argue for it as their best or most essential, but every track its a pure joyous pleasure. Reminds me of Out of Focus two first. Same (naive & revolutionary) political flutedriven jazzy prog. Catchier though.
