Agree. Also agree these are increasing elusive unless you want to shell out silly money to obtain them. Picked Thud up at Amazon.UK very cheaply 3 years ago (and was surprised to open the envelope and discover a live ep with Kashmir included taped to the CD box) but now see "unobtainable" or a high price second hand there. Also got Toy Matinee very cheap from Amazon, but was dismayed to find I had bought the surround sound version, not playable on a conventional CD player. Bought The Shaming Of The true from via the Kevin Gilbert Estates site also 3 years ago, but see this became unavailable for over a year - although I did read more pressings were being made and now should be available again. I, in part suspect the KG Estates are slow at responding to demand for Gilbert recordings - I suggest their released Thud live recently, to counter a bootlegger offering off-the desk recordings of same for nothing and doing this from early spring 2009. |
I hear you Dick.I was lucky enough to pick up Kevin's cd's a few years ago at really decent prices.
Regarding The Shaming of the True,it is being remastered and will be re-issued soon.

That's kind of almost odd. I thought the original packaging was great, and the production quality was almost as good as can be. I'm doing some more research to see if it's worth buying... -Jeff

^ Excellent as well. But not comparable to this one. It's just perfect. Really GG influenced, in my opinion, but with a more modern touch. Certifiable #1 Smash, City of the Sun, Staring Into Nothing and Best Laid Plans are my favorites.

One of the things I love about Shaming is the way it's prog without really trying to be prog. It just is filled with beautiful melodies, and little oddities that make it more than a mainstream album. One of the reasons why it is easily in my top 10 albums of all time is the simple reprise of the first song in the ending. I think it gives a nice book-end feeling to the album, and I always want to hear the album again.

Can anyone explain in more detail what happened in his personal life? All I can find on the internet is very "censored" information. What happened with him and Sheryl Crow? Why did he kill himself? etc...
His music is magic... I own The Shaming of the True, and the 94' ProgFest video...
I almost cry every time I realize that he was shortlisted to be the new Genesis singer, but his manager found him dead when he was going to deliver the news :(

Here's a good article that explains the whole Gilbert/Crow relationship.Needless to say she really f**ked Kevin over, and I cannot stand the woman to this day.
Kevin did not kill himself,he was found dead on bed at his home, wearing some fetish gear with a belt looped around his neck and the other end secured to the headboard. The official cause of death is "accidental suicide" but he was really a victim of auto-erotic asphyxiation.I consider that the most tragic part of his life, that his death was so unecessary.

Wow, thanks for posting that, Jody. I just knew he died of an asphyxiation, but I didn't know any of the details.

The details aren't nice, but that is how he died, there is no ignoring that fact.A lot of his fans don't like to talk about the circumstances of his death.

*bump*
So for Christmas this year, I received the "Toy Matinee" CD, I've only listened to it a few times so far but wow, what a great group of songs. I wouldn't refer to the CD as prog, but there are several stand out songs and the whole CD is a good listen.
"The Ballad of Jenny Ledge" and "Last Plane Out" both really stick in my head. I think "Thud" has just jumped to the top of my birthday list.
The more I hear of his work, the more I'm saddened by his death.
