Disco Volante by miles.
The others are good no doubt, but DV is a masterpiece.

The debut, one of my most listened to albums ever. I just happened to be listening to it when I saw this poll.

I really don't understand the general love for DV, but I find the pastiche thing pretty lame. I like Mike Patton, but I think they're so famous mostly because they were on a major label so they were many people's first exposure to OMG AVANT music (even though they're really not that avant most of the time). So my vote is for California because at least the melodies feel strong enough to stand on

I got the first album from a friend when it came out and we were both ecstatic about it. Really fun album. I got the second album when I was in my army service and it suited very well the demented state of mind I was in and served well to contrast the depressive and oppressive martial surroundings. I used to play both albums when I could at the little time there was for sleep just to be able to regain contact with normality. Yes, Disco Volante was at that time a semblance of normality for me; that tells you something about the state of mind I was in. I was in my last year of army service when I got the third album and also fell for it quickly with the lovely Pink Cigarette and the insane Ars Moriendi. If I had to choose, I'd go with the debut.

In the minority, apprently, but I'm voting for California. It just feels like they took their ideas and made a real album with it, instead of just messing around with some fun stuff (which is good and all, but their other albums never felt as cohesive or focused IMO) and it still manages to be full of all that crazy stuff Patton loves to do

All three are great but I like DV the most. If you like that album you will most likely enjoy Trey's band Secret Chiefs 3 as well.

IMO the self titled is one of the best albums by any artist ever

I hate the self-titled debut.
Disco Volante was a big improvement.
California is in my top ten faves of all time.
Shame they didn't continue. With that track record the next album would've been the greatest musical creation in the whole universe.

If it weren't for California I wouldn't have tried the other two. As it stands I am happy having all three.

Has anyone heard their pre-Warner Bros albums, the rare and hard to find cassettes?
The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny (1986) Bowel of Chiley (1987) Goddammit I Love America! (1988) OU818 (1989)

All the albums are pretty great. I guess I prefer Disco Volante.

I prefer California, in my opinion represent the best vocal perfomance of Mike in Mr Bungle.
All the discography are excellent

The debut is by far their best album, no question. In my opinion, Disco Volante was a major disappointment and horrible follow-up. California has a few decent tracks, but, not much to write home about. As I see it, the debut is the only Mr. Bungle album.

DV is widely considered to have traces of avant-garde. And the fact that a major label released it is avant in itself.

My argument is that saying a band that bounces from swing jazz to death metal to Klezmer within the span of two or three minutes isn't "that avant" is ludicrous, nevermind the fact that John Zorn was basically a member of the band for their first album(I know he just produced it, but his hand is literally EVERYWHERE on that album). And yeah, I listen to Merzbow and Sunn O))) and Wolf Eyes and Nurse With Wound so I'm not an "OMG AVANT" person, as you've so labeled Mr. Bungle's fans. I'm calling them avant-garde because just, straight up, that's what they are. I'm wondering what you think is NOT avant about them.
