I'll eliminate Rudess right away because DT keyboard solos are full of way too much cheese though I do think he's extraordinarily talented and he has on occasion played some really awesome parts for DT. Barbieri played some fantastic keyboard parts on Anesthetize and other songs but I'm gonna give it to Wiberg. Wiberg's playing just fits in so seamlessly with the songs. He uses the keyboard sparingly, with precision, and excellent timing. And overall I just enjoy his folksy/gothic sound.

Rudess (for his solo/collaboration albums only, they show he has massive potential), even though his DT work is brilliant!

For technical ability- Rudess is immensely talented
For atmosphere- Barbieri is the master
For timing and subtlety- Per Wiburg

I'm going with Barbieri, I'm a life long fan of Japan and his PT work speaks for itself. Although Barbieri has admitted himself that he's not really a keyboard player, ie playing on keys is quite alien to him, he's more of an effects man.

Rudess would be last on that list but a tough call between the other two mainly because they have such different styles. Wiberg played some beautiful piano on an ANEKDOTEN track that was on the "Chapters" compilation. Went with Barieri because i love his spacey style.

Pretty much this, but I'm going with Rudess because he's played some pretty awesome keyboard solos.

Hi,
It's hard to not appreciate Richard's originality and ability to add a lot of mood and atmosphere to the music that I really thing that Jordan is not capable of.
And I think that a lot of Jordan's keyboard parts these days are just fills here and there and not quite a part of the actual music itself ... and in concert, this is even worse ... his hipness with a moving keyboard and idiocy, means one thing ... nobody can hear him, and to me that shows how good he is ... he isn't! You can't miss the keyboards in PT and they are very good and create an awesome sense of detail and mood for each piece and they are not "fills" or just little rock'n'roll licks, which to me, makes me feel that Jordan is just lazy and not interested in the music itself.
Opeth I wwill reserve judgement, as some of their material (the better known ones too) was pretty much defined and designed by Mr. Porcupine Tree!

Mr. Porcupine Tree had nothing to do with Still Life, and it is, along Blackwater Park, (which was Wilson's first collaboration with Opeth), the band's most critically acclaimed work. And their highest rated work on this site as well.

Love Wiberg but I'd like to see him get more space on the next Opeth. He's also quite cool with Spiritual Beggars!
The best is Barbieri who almost beats Richard Wright for me as most interesting rock-keyboard-player ever.
