Topic: Favourite of the Guapo 'triptych' Posted: March 19 2009 at 08:10 |
Elixirs has been out for a while, so people should be able to decide now (or not). All three rank amongst my favourite albums ever, and they all work on quite different levels. But if I had to choose one, it'd probably be Black Oni. It binds all my favourite genres together: prog meets drone meets "post-rock" meets zeuhl meets ambient meets jazz meets RIO, etc.. All three of them do to a greater or lesser extent, but I guess I just find Black Oni to have this perfect balance. And also it contains Black Oni V, which is a killer track!
If you chose the fourth option, here are some links for you to check out: www.myspace.com/guapoband guaponews.blogspot.com

Three excellent albums, to say the least.
My vote goes to Five Suns. Part II is just gorgeous.

Maybe... But I need some more spins before Elixirs is a difficult one for me... Maybe too long tracks, and a little bit noodly for the moment...

Black Oni easily, really enjoy the others but for me Black Oni is one of the most ferocious displays of awesomeness in my entire music collection.

Five Suns and Black Oni are about tied for me. Love both. I'm not so enamoured with Elixirs (I find it less substantial). I've voted for Black Oni in the past, but now I'm giving it to Five Suns. Both are great, imo. Incidentally, I also like Twisted Stems muchly (and Miasma and The Carousel of Headless Horses is great).

i have not yet heard five suns, though i have high hopes for it. Black Oni i liked at first, but now i find it rather predictable and derrivative. Elixirs is my favorite, as i think its thier most origional sounding, even if Guapo are beginning to sound like a project (which i suppose they are now) rather than a band.
2 further questions:-
1.Has anyone got Daniel O'Sullivan's Mothlite album? i seriously recommend it.
2.Has anyone got the early Guapo albums like 'Towers open fire'. they have long since been unavailable and i'd love to know what they sound like

Yeah, the Mothlite album is also fantastic. Great atmosphere! By the way, there are two new preview tracks on their myspace: myspace.com/mothlite. Although a bit more 'poppy' (not necessarily a bad thing), I think they sound promising. Yes, I've got Towers Open Fire on my computer. I haven't listened to it that much, but so far I don't really enjoy it. A bit noisy and trashy punk-rock maybe, with some electronic elements and tapes. You can hear some traces, although slight, of what they were to become, though.

Black Oni
Not a huge fan of the band though, never differentiated themselves enough to my ears.
