Topic: New Neo: Kino vs. Frost* Posted: August 25 2006 at 16:57 |
Both of these bands have put out quality debuts. It also goes without saying that John Mitchell has become progressive music's work horse when you factor in all of the projects with which he's involved. Between these two bands, Arena, The Urbane and now It Bites, it's amazing that he has any downtime whatsoever.
But I digress. Which band's debut album has impressed you the most? Although Frost* is a bit more progressive in nature, I have to go with Kino. Picture was the best CD I bought last year and I still love it. Milliontown is nice, as well. I just find Kino to be a wee bit better.

My vote goes to The Frost. I just bought "Milliontown" based on a recommendation from another forum post. The cd is fantastic. I bought Kino "Picture" last year. While it is a good album, I do not tend to play it much. I know that will not be the case for "Milliontown."

Although both are not to my likings, I voted for Frost. Kino IMO is pure commercial uninspired rubbish. Some moments in Milliontown are very repulsive as well, but there are some very good moments too, and all in all it's much better album than Picture.

Agreed about Kino, eugene. I haven't heard the Frost album yet, but considering the acclaim it's recieved I would imagine it can't be any worse.

Frost gets my vote.Kino didn't really impress me much, they aren't really proggy at all, more mainstream rock than anything.

I don't know, but the sample from Frost* on this site ("Black Light Machine") blew me away with its freshness and energy. Very un-neo-prog-like . I'll be getting that album for sure!

Frost* without a doubt, even though I enjoy much of Kino's Picture. Milliontown is a lot more progressive and more interesting, the production is wonderful, etc...

I voted Frost. I rated them 4 stars in the reviewdepartment but that was actually 4.5 and
I was a little too negative about the 4 shorter songs. Hyperventilate and No me no you aren't that bad really. I could have given 5 stars I feel.
Kino on the other hand is far less impressive to me. I will do the review this year but it will not get further than 3 stars. Just Loser's Day parade is very good, the rest far less.
Still I think it's a pity these kind of projects are often "dayflies" . Especially in the case of Frost I would like to hear the successor. But I heard Frost will be doing no more so ....alas.

Didn't like Milliontown at all, however, I thought Picture had some saving moments especially the opener, Loser Day Parade, if the rest of the album had been at that strength it would have been a winner.

Big thread bump here. Two very under-rated bands.
After well over a year of digestion, I go with Kino. It leaves me in a good mood and has become my Friday post work 45 minute commute music. Frost is also very good and I want much much much more of this music from each.

I really don't agree with anything slightly-commercial being labeled "rubbish" or even worse, "repulsive", but what the hell, IMO can also be IYHO.....
By the way, as "commercial" as KINO may appear to be, I certainly haven't seen it anihilating anybody at the top 10000 Billboard charts.... (yes, 10000)
But I digress: both are good bands with good songs and some weak songs also. I prefered *FROST becasue KINO has a few songs that sound really uninspired (not because they're not incredibly prog but because they're not inspired or entertaining, which is a big difference, at least IMO). So, IMO *Frost is better than KINO... But IMO KINO has some very good songs and I would look forward to more from them, even if ITOOM they should dissapear...
