Another for Chick! These albums contain some of my absolute favorite material by the late, great genius. Albums like these, particularly the run in the mid to late 70s, are what I would recommend any prog/fusion fan, and certainly should secure him a place on the site. I'm not even sure I can choose. Light as a Feather was one of the first of his I ever heard, and I clicked with it instantly. Then, it was My Spanish Heart, a double album that arrested me with its orchestrations and Spanish influence. I think either The Leprechaun or The Mad Hatter are my favorite (definitely the proggiest, that's for sure), but asking me to choose between them is too hard (even though I'm the one asking, haha). I also checked out the last three more recently, and was pleasantly surprised that they were also AMAZING. Well, maybe not surprised about Vigil, as it won a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album. Usually I don't give a heck about what the Grammy's think is good music, but usually the winners in the instrumental jazz categories are actually decent. And his return to fusion was certainly a worthy endeavor!

A note about the first two albums: I have decided not to include them in the RTF poll for a few reasons. First off, some background, so you know I know what I'm talking about. Return to Forever the album was originally attributed to Chick Corea. The follow-up Light as a Feather, recorded with the same line-up, was attributed to Chick Corea and Return to Forever. The first has retroactively been considered by many as the first canonical RTF entry, an assessment I don't necessarily disagree with. However, it's clear there were some changes between Feather and Hymn. Firstly, the line-up/instrumentation. Chick and Stanley were the only members to carry over onto Hymn (and, indeed, were the only constant RTF members on every release by the group). While the former albums featured vocals (by Gayle Moran, who would return on Musicmagic) and heavy usage of Joe Farrell's flute/saxes, the latter albums featured the guitar heavily. Secondly, the compositional contributions by members other than Chick were much more apparent on the latter albums. The former albums had tunes written almost exclusively by Chick (which makes sense considering the first album was attributed to him). Thirdly, and most importantly, there was a significant change in the style of music. While I would consider all of them to be Jazz Fusion, the former are infused mainly with more Latin styles, especially Bossa Nova. The latter are infused with much more rock and funk. In conclusion, yes, those two albums could have been in the RTF poll I made. But they aren't. So there. It's my poll. And I made that one a while ago, so it would be pointless to add them now anyway. In any case, they're all killer albums in my book!

Yes on both points: The album titled Return to Forever is indeed Chick solo; Re: Light as a Feather, I concur. The "first RTF album" is Hot7G.

P.S. My vote goes to Return to Forever (1972).

Chick Corea left an amazing legacy, so it's hard to choose one over the other. I guess depending on the mood I'm in, I could vote for any of these.

^Me too! I really hope this poll gets some traction and some members check out some of these albums if they haven't heard them. Very pleasing to my prog-inclined ears.
Any you're leaning towards? For me, it's probably Leprechaun and Mad Hatter, then Friends and Spanish Heart, then maybe Light As a Feather. But The Vigil might take a few more listens to sink in.

I only know about half of these, of which I prefer The Virgil.

It definitely was an enjoyable listen for me, particularly that third track. What other ones are you familiar with?

It was a bit of a surprise for me when I first heard it. CC had kind of fallen off my radar and I wasn't aware he was still doing music like that. And the first five.

^Yeah I agree. Especially that third track.
I just re-listened to The Ultimate Adventure again today, and it did reach me more. The performances are all stellar. I think the only problem I have is that it loses a little life near the middle. While each tracker is killer, listening to them all in a row feels a bit tedious. Many are very similar. Still good though.

Ok. Upon much deliberation, I think I'll go with Leprechaun. Mostly because it somehow has no votes, yet also contains tracks like Lenore, Night Sprite (RTF fans rejoice), Soft and Gentle (Light as a Feather fans rejoice), and The Leprechaun's Dream. I guess not many forum members have heard this one?

Special shout out to Friends, which has the killer track Samba Song. Check it out! Steve Gadd elevates it to revelatory heights.

Don't know all of these albums (i.e., the stuff after the 1980s) but The Mad Hatter has floated around in my list of 50 All-Time favorite albums since it came out. Just magical! Steve Gadd, Eddie Gomez, Joe Farrell, Gayle Moran, Herbie Hancock and, of course, Chick, are all PHENOMENAL!

I've been listening to "The Ultimate Adventure" recently and it's amazing, like all of these.
