Back in the 90's both bands were equally known and respected. Actually if anything OT were at one point more respected and more known(at least in the US) maybe partly because they were on a major label and had wide distribution. However, at some point things changed and PT ultimately became quite a bit more well known. Popularity contests aside I think both bands are equally strong although I admit I lost track of OT somewhere down the road. All that being said I am interested in quality so I want to know which band you prefer not because you think they are cool or because you only know them(which is why I have options 3 and 5 in here). I didn't want a majority of the votes to be one band just because they are more well known. So please vote for the appropriate choice and only one band or the other if you know both bands fairly well(at least 4 albums by each band).

I've always liked Porcupine Tree and never liked Ozric Tentacles, so it's an easy choice for me.

Porcupine Tree. I like Ozric Tentacles a lot, but not as much as PT.

OT are a bit too repetitive. Good but I prefer PT. None of the two is my fav anyway.

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

I don't hate them but the one thing that kind of bothers me about them is that it seems they went in a more metal direction just to get a bigger audience and mainstream acceptance(especially in the metal community even though they were never really metal imo). In a way I can't really blame them because it worked but it also sort of made them seem like sell outs(at least to some degree). Ozric Tentacles never really made that transition to the "big time" but they did at some point seem to gain a lot of fans in the jam band community.

I'll vote for the Ozrics.
Despite their music being formulaic and predictable, it gave me more pleasure in the 90's (my crazy years) than PT ever did. Porcupine Tree write and perform songs, and they have made a handful of very worthy albums (In Absentia may be among my favourte prog albums) but the Ozrics make bubble gum for the ears...but bubble gum that's laced with high grade quality acid. |

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

They may have taken this turn because this was just the music they wanted to play at the time. Doesn't need to have any element of a sell-out. Actually I love most of that material, In Absentia and Deadwing are my fav PT albums, and I am not a metalhead at all. In fact I vote for PT for the variety that they offer. I like OT a lot but I'm not sure anyone needs more than their two or three top albums. |
