Your choice between these two 70's proggy hard rock bands?
I dig both bands, but definitely I'll go with Heep, because they have a stronger run of 3 very good albums: Salisbury, Look at Yourself and Demons and Wizards.

For me BOC have it with their tongue in cheek humour and a certain unique sophistication despite some rough edges.. UH have some good tracks (Look at yourself and Demons & Wizards are the best lps) but there is just too much non descript and mediocre stuff out there.. also live, I just enjoy BOC so much more than UH

BOC. I've only found a UH song here or there that I liked but I have several BOC albums I love all the way through...

BOC because they spell Oyster with two little dots over the letter O, and because Buck Dharma is an underappreciated guitarist.

BOC! Buck is one of the most underrated shredders ever. The guy really doesn't get his props (at least not since the band's heyday ended in the mid-1980s). They still tour ("On tour forever"), but the very last album of original music they recorded, Curse of the Hidden Mirror, is actually one of their best! Hard to believe it's been 16 years, already!
That said, I do enjoy Heep, especially (wait for it) Firefly...with lead vocals by John Lawton.

Besides his underrated playing, I also really like Buck's voice when he takes the lead vocal like on "Then Came the Last Days of May", "Burning For You", etc... |

Cult. Their unique approach on the early albums really grabs me and they've got so many good songs.
I'm afraid I've always felt Heep were second-rate. I wanted to like them, but their stuff doesn't really make it for me.

Yeah, Buck's a fine singer, too. Do you have his solo album, Flat Out?

BOC. I like a lot of Heep but have a different appreciation mode. They have different singers doing Byron numbers which never sits well with me; Byron's vocals for better or worse are too iconic. Of course some may hear a number before they hear the Byron fronted Heep and then what?
A few lesser numbers from BOC (Debbie Denise is particularly loathsome) but few do an entire record as horrible as Heep's Conquest. But I like to dwell on fine live albums and studio efforts such as Look At Yourself and Secret Treaties, Sweet Freedom, Fire Of Unknown Origin. BOC numbers such as Astronomy and Veteran of the Psychic Wars (esp. live with the new-ish fantastic lead guitar section) are pinnacles of rock. The n there is Salisbury. Wonderful. You get a lot of good value from both bands. Oh and the first 3 BOC actually improve with the bonus cuts unlike tracks that feel like they're just added on like some of the single edits from Heep. (I hate edited singles... Stealin' for my favourite example... ) |

I worked on a Uriah heep gig on the conquest tour (1980 I think) with Samson and Budgie, both of whom blew UH out of the water.. Mick Box seemed a nice enough guy, very jolly and fairly laid back but the gig was mess and they had a Canadian keyboard player who ran about with a keytar and a drum kit with the weirdest shaped drums.. I always thought they WERE Spinal tap... ive got it in my head that Trevor boulder was playing with them again at that point but... time does funny things to your memory

I like both bands but BOC has always been a favorite of mine.
Seen them several times and love their hard rock occult motif.

BÖC - the more I listen the better they get. Uriah Heep - I don't know apart from a few killer tunes they never did anything for me.
