I am still undecided but after watching Jorden Rudess on the Score dvd documentary he said the fans were divided on which disk was the best...

If you cut out Glass prison (which is one of my favorite songs by them) disk one is among the worst stuff they ever did, specially Misunderstood and the Great debate Disk two, however, is among the very best they ever did!!! So, no brainer

As much as I appreciate Disc one, I feel like it's filler compared to the solid songs that they're capable of doing.
Disc two, despite the cheesy nonesense lyrics (sorry), is quite admirable and memorable. I bet I can hum a melody from that disc better than I can for disc one.

With me it is the other way around. I was so anxious to by this album when when it was released . I went to store payed $ 25.00 on sale too much f*$%#cking money!!! and I loved CD 1 but CD 2 was a big disappointment. I hardly like it I never listen to as both cds. Not hard enough too, kind of boring, not the awesome TD I am accustom to). but eventually it grow on and now I really like but I still prefer CD 1 as my favorite. I love the great debate and misunderstood totally the opposite of you el Botny isn't that ironic.
However the live version that came out last years it is superior.
The live Orchestra rules!!!

I'm sorry to say that the first half of 6DOIT (with the possible exception of 'Disappear') is some of their poorest work ever for my personal taste. I've tried and tried and tried to get into it and find some solid melodies to latch onto but I think it's time I gave up- it's just self indulgent to my ears. Most tracks are overlong and have no need to be, imho, with long solos used to pad them out. Prog at its worst, imho of course.
The second side however is a totally different kettle of fish. This I actively find to feature some of their BEST work yet with some strong melodic pieces and a good flow with far less emphasis on long solos, imho. So disc 2 for me...

I love both, and take it as a whole album... so last option.

To what I hear, first disc is more heavy and second is more prog. My vote goes to the prog aspect of the album.

I like the first disc better. It was my first positive exposure to DT, and I still think it has great songs, especially The Glass Prison and The Great Debate.

I really like the album as a whole, but I do like the first disc a little more than the second.

I prefer disc 2 much more. Disc 1 certainly has its moments, but disc 2 just feels much more complete.

I too have a preferance for the second cd, but I really like the first 3 songs on disc 1.
However, when I do listen to it, I listen to all of it, and not just one disc...

I dislike them both equally. I dislike the production and the mix - the drums are way to forward, it's like a 90 minute drum solo with musical accompaniment - its just too hard to listen too - Luckily they fixed that on Train of Thought.

I absolutely love the second disc. It works both as a single wonderful song as well as a coherent collection of melodies and different styles: it's not 100% prog, there's some of the trashiest DT ever in there too (The Test that Stumped them All). A real masterpiece.
On the other hand, some songs on Disc 1 are good, some real bad, overall disappointing. Having listened to Systematic Chaos, it kind of reminds me of that SDOIT first cd: songs are not bad, just tend to be sadly uninspiring and overlong.

i really enjoy both discs and take it as one album, however, if i had to choose i would pick the second disc, although as an individual song my favourite is probably the glass prison. however, the second is a single forty two minute song, and i have a thing for epics. the live version of the song six degrees of inner turbulence with the orchestra on the score dvd is amazing, and i prefer it to the studio one.

The thing about the album is that there is only one stand-out track (Solitary Shell) and only one horrible part (part of the Glass Prison with the awful backing vocals). The rest is like a straight line of good, but not great stuff. Granted, the second disc is better.

I really love both CD's.
SDOIT is my favorite DT album along with I&W but I realize that I listen to SDOIT more often.
If, as stated before in this thread, SC (which I don't want to listen to before the official release) is in the same vein than the first CD of SDOIT, I'll be the happiest man in the world for a while ...
