Topic: Four Baroque Masterpieces Posted: January 13 2010 at 15:57
Incidently I'm studying these for A Level Music at the moment, however because I'm really heavily into Baroque music, I enjoy them all tremendously. Four great composers (arguably the greatest of their period) and four lengthy, epic and emotional pieces. Which do you prefer?
For me, it's MftFoQM.
Why? It's dark. Really really dark. The intro march is stunning and probably one of the best to anything in history. The rest is really damn beautiful and solemn packed full of "hairs on the back of the neck" moments. Although that could be said for SMP as well, I think MftFoQM is a cut above because the mood is so HEAVY. I love it

I've adored Bach's St. Matthews Passion ever since my dad took me with him to a performance of the work when I was a little kid, so I voted SMP. Bach is the greatest composer ever in my opinion.
I'm not that fond of Vivaldi (Corelli is much better imo) , but the other two works are great as well.

I've only heard part of St Matthew's, but it wasn't as great as I was expecting. Vivaldi is by far my favorite baroque composer, though, so I probably should hear Gloria.
