Hello there, interesting topic which I don't think has been brought up before (I hope at least).

Which prog vocalist has taken the longest period of time for you to appriciate? In my case I think it was Peter Hammill, who took about 3 weeks to really get to know me (vice versa obviously)

I suppose Geddy Lee. I have loved Rush since Caress Of Steel came out, but I couldn't take to Geddy's voice for a long time. But from Hemispheres onwards I started to enjoy it. And I think he is one of the few vocalists who have improved over the years. Now he sings in a lower register, his voice is very pleasant on the ear, to me anyway. A good example is his singing on his solo album, My Favourite Headache. A very good album by the way.Smile

I'm a fast appreciator. It would therefore abnormal to talk about likings that came, slightly rougher, but that get comfortable in matter of days.

Mikael Akerfeldt. I'm still no great fan of his growls but their nolonger the weak point of the music for me, I'm still not going to really love 'em though.

I was just about to say that LOL though some of his growls are quite fitting, not to say I'm a fan of the style of "singing" in the first place, but he at least does them well and coherently

Ray Alder from fates Warning... I have 4 albums and still can't stand him... probably when he's 60 he'll be mature enough in the singing department so as to stop his yelling and start melody.... I can't get to like him.

Same goes with hogarth... his whispering, his almost inaudible singing only got to me in BRAVE. But they have failed since.

Nicholls from Iq is another thing: at first I was quite puzzled, but now is one of my favorites.

Hammil, but now I really apreciate him. On the other hand, Peter Gabriel sounds very boring to my ears. Francesco di Giacommo was other that grew on me after some two years of listening.
Bach, Ma, Bros, Déia, Dante.

Agreed, since I've reviewed Still Life, the growls have grown on me abit and they fit to the point that I cant imagine Opeth without them, but I still prefere normal singing to growling (Akerfeldt being the only growler that I like so far since you can at least understand what it is that he is singing).

I can't think of any vocalists I have grown to like. I either like them or I don't straight away. I liked Geddy Lee, Peter Hamill etc first time I heard them. I may eventually like Dagmar Krause, but I doubt it!

Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers originally in the late 60's/early 70's (never hooked into Dylan's voice) but the realisation these guys sing lyrics with English accents rather than the then familiar American intonations, let me in. Then Geddy Lee and Les Claypool, Tom Waits. And what about Michael Franks......?
