I've always tried to adhere to the rule "don't judge a book by its cover," but this bands name is just...

I like them, they are so outrageous that they are close to genius. But they do not belong here.

I have a bunch of their stuff on old cassettes from the 80's - Locust Abortion Technician, Psychic..Powerless..Another Man's Sac, Rembrandt Pussyhorse, Hairway to Steven.  I like their sense of humor and irreverance toward the music business in general.  I read somewhere that back in the 80's they used to tour in Central America and billed themselves as a Mexican punk band  (I think they're actually from Texas).

Not sure if they should be considered progressive, any more than bands like Camper Van Beethoven, The The, Gun Club, or Dead Kennedys.  While their sound is pretty much unique (or was when they started out at least), I'm not sure you could say they've really broken any kind of new musical ground, or even progressed or experimented much with their own sound since its inception over 20 years ago.  I don't think they're any more progressive then say, The Clash.

Yeah, I do enjoy the band, however I agree with ClemofNazareth & Seyo that they do not belong here. I also think the nail was hit on the head by saying they really haven't broken new ground with their sound.

Butthole Surfers (What a GREAT name, possibly on of rock's finest) was a WONDERFUL band on their inicial phase (1982-88). They were some kind of "Funny-Schizophrenic-Noise-Harcore". It's f**kin insane music, and I love f**kin insane music. Two thumbs up, but I don't think they're prog...
And above all, is punk

Did Lee Squat?  Porn on the Cob?  Lesbian Dopeheads on Mopeds?  I think we did this thread a couple weeks ago.

Inflatable Party Sheep?  Stiff Richards?  Red Peters?  No more, really.....

They're one of the best live bands I've ever seen, and I've seen them more times than any other band except the Ramones and the Dead. I'd call them more psychedelic (alternative 'acid rock'?) than progressive, but they really have their own style.
