From the band's website:

"Legend’s songs are woven around mystical and pagan themes, folklore and archetypal myths they are about passion – not fashion. This has led them to success in Japan and Europe, despite never really making the breakthrough in the UK. They have released 3 CD albums and a Live concert Video and after 21 years are about to release a ‘best of’ CD entitled ‘Ritual Echo’ and re-release their concert video on DVD and for the first time on CD.

And just when you thought it was safe...  Plans are afoot to record a new album in 2010... so watch out for ‘Cardinal Points’." (my emphasis)

To sum up we will have three different releases:

(1) a ‘best of’ CD entitled ‘Ritual Echo’ (that will be released tomorrow!).

(2) a re-release of their concert video 'Playing With Fire' on DVD and for the first time on CD. And

(3) a brand new studio album entitled 'Cardinal Points'

Follow these links to listen to several different songs by the band. The songs 'Mordred', 'All Hallows Eve' and 'Triple Aspect Overture' are particularly good. Indeed, I was so impressed by these songs that I ordered two of their albums ('Second Sight' and 'Triple Aspect') which are available for order from the first of the links above. I report back when I get them!

Judging from the handful of songs I've heard so far, this band is criminally underrated!

More info on the band (from the same source):

“Founded in 1988 by keyboard player / producer Steve Paine, Legend performs epic songs that twist and turn effortlessly through a myriad of time and tempos. Mystical lyrics, delivered by soaring almost operatic female vocals and powerful melodic guitars and layered keyboard textures, held together by a tight, punchy and precise rhythm section.

These are the hallmarks of Legend. An archetypical progressive / symphonic rock band or if you prefer a dinosaur. Legend are not ‘fashionable’, ‘chic’ or ‘in vogue’ they are unusual and unique and they are here to stay. So if you like Rush, Jethro Tull, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Yes, Solstice, Steeleye Span, Renaissance... the list goes on... then you will probably like Legend.”

Even more info on the new album (again, from the same source):

“... Legend had planned to start work on their forth epic ‘Cardinal Points’ in 1998 however delays with other Pagan Media projects meant that this was postponed. In 1999 Pagan Media ceased to trade and the future of Legend hung in the balance.

Rather than split up as such the band became dormant, always with the intent of getting back together when circumstances allowed [...]

Strangely and unbeknownst to the band, in 2002 Legend had a resurgence of popularity this time in the USA where somehow ‘Triple Aspect’ enjoyed a brief degree of acclaim, the US fans erroneously believing the CD had only been released in 2001.

Which brings us to the present, at the request of several fans and a rekindling of interest from Japan, the sleeping dragon that is Legend has stirred and has opened one sleepy eye and things once more are afoot. A best of anthology entitled ‘Ritual Echo’ will be released in December 2009 closely followed by the re-release of ‘Playing with Fire’ digitally re-mastered onto both DVD and for the first time CD.

During Legend’s dormant phase Steve Paine has written / resurrected the basis of what will hopefully become the band’s forth CD ‘Cardinal Points’ in 2010.”

Well, I promised that I would report back when I had listened to the two albums I ordered. I have reviewed both albums and given both of them four stars. These are really great and highly recommended albums! I can only confirm my assumption that Legend is a criminally underrated band. I have ordered their first album now from Amazon.
