OK, I confess - I wouldn't have prompted this suggestion if it weren't for some of the most recent non-unanimously accepted inclusions into said sub-genres. I just though that before we add Björk we could give Happy a deserved go.
Plenty said and written here about Happy Rhodes. General opinion is that she is a very talented musician and an amazing singer. But what of her relation to prog?
There is a previous Happy Rhodes topic I created in General Music Discussions. Plenty of info and evaluation material there: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=60184
Recently I found that her collaborator Kevin Bartlett was already in the Archives, as well as a band in Eclectic (Brainstack) listing her among their influences.

NO, I listened to her works recently, the connection with Kate Bush is not enough to make her prog.

Let the Eval begin!!
Her "connection to Kate", if there is one, is not the reason to eval her. Her music is. The Crossover team seems quite open to giving artists a fair shake based on their music, not reputation or image. Happy is a serious artist, so let her be eval'd. If she's not suitable for Cross she will be rejected. |

At the rate we're inducting more and more questionable material into Crossover and PR, I'm beggining to think Avant-Prog would be a better fit.

This would make Tory amos included in the free-jazz genre

Hi, long time reader, first time poster.
Re: Happy Rhodes, I would say that she does sound similar to several artists already included on the site under both Crossover and Prog-Related (Kate Bush and Tori Amos, in particular). It's pretty obvious that Kate Bush was an influence on her. She has covered other artists already included on the site, most notably Yes ("The Yes Medley" on the album The Keep - though it is an accoustic album), Bowie and Queen. I'm also pretty sure that she's cited them as an influences (although I'd have to look up the reference), along with Peter Gabriel. Admittedly, I love Happy Rhodes' music, but I understand it would probably be considered a "controversial" inclusion to add her to PA (and I'm not sure if she has already been rejected -I didn't see anything for her on ProgFreak). However, I wouldn't argue against seeing her here in whatever category best suited her (I imagine it would almost certainly be Prog-Related or Crossover). Though I'm aware that it's not an accepted argument for her inclusion, if Kate and Tori are already here, I can't see a convincing argument not to include Happy Rhodes. *ducks for cover* To my ears, she is of the same immediate "family" of art rock that they are and IMO would have similar appeal to prog fans. Considering that she isn't as well known as the other two, it would likely help expose more listeners to her. I'd suggest the Many Worlds are Born Tonight and Equipose albums as the starting point for evaluation, but would highly recommend listening to everything she has released from Ecto going forward. Happy's similarities to Bush are evident and also overstated. She is a very talented musician in her own right. So I'm a solid YES YEEESSS YEEESSS.

So why has she not been sent to crossover for eval?

^ It was a suggestion for Prog Related. Crossover was only mentioned in order to be made fun of, sorry about that, but...
Even a Crossover Team member posted here but didn't feel like bringing the suggestion to the team, so I don't know why you're surprised. Edited by harmonium.ro - August 11 2011 at 07:47 |

Actually I suggested her for evaluation for both sections. Personally I feel Prog-Related would be a better fit, but most similar acts are in Crossover, so that could do as well.

However, while I don't find her as progressive as Kate Bush, she is more interesting than Tori Amos (who I would not have voted to approve).
I think she deserves a chance.
That's not saying I would vote yes.

I assumed she must have already been suggested and shot down. Maybe I was resting on my laurels a bit for casting an approving vote for Tori and NIN. Tori can play rings around many of the legendary prog keyboardists on this site. Then again I may have suggested her there or somewhere else. And look at the discouraging words of some of the other posters. Also I've only been familiar with her work for little over a year. After a buying spree last year I am sort of cranking it up again with Equipoise and going after the out of print back catalog. I and II are on their way. Personally I think crossover would be a happy home for her and I'd bring in Kate from the related. Edited by Slartibartfast - August 11 2011 at 19:08 |

^ Mm, we have to be careful here. And to play on Evolver's words, that's not saying NO to her. Do anyone know what is point of view of admins (as evaluators for Prog-Related) ? I think that's important before proceeding furt |
