Skáphe are an international avant-garde black metal project of American multi-instrumentalist Alex Poole (of Chaos Moon, Entheogen, Krieg and others) and the Icelandic musician known as D.G. (of Misþyrming and Naðra, and a fellow collaborator with Poole in Martröð). The band plays dense, claustrophobic and darkly psychedelic black metal intended to "recreate the structures and...sensations of psychedelic substances."
Skáphe initially began in 2014 as Poole's solo outlet after composing tracks deemed radically different from Chaos Moon's material, and his self-titled debut followed the same year on Fallen Empire Records. D.G. would join the project in 2015, handling vocals with Poole while the latter juggled guitars, keyboards and bass. The two would work on another full-length, an EP and a collaborative record with Icelandic one-man band Wormlust (helmed by H.V Lyngdal, who created the artwork for Skáphe's releases) before being joined by drummer Jack Blackburn - Poole's Chaos Moon and Entheogen bandmate - for Skáphe³, their most progressive and realized work yet, issued on the band's current label Mystískaos. The group's nightmarish atmosphere and labyrinthine song structures will entice adventurous listeners of Portal, Qrixkuor, Gnaw Their Tongues, Axis of Perdition, Oranssi Pazuzu and Deathspell Omega. ![]() "Skáphe" (2014) "Skáphe²" (2016) "Untitled" EP (2017) "Kosmískur hryllingur" (collaboration with Wormlust) (2019) "Skáphe³" (2020)

I was curious and pleasantly surprised to see Qrixkuor added recently, as they're part of the murky, cavernous style of death metal I didn't think would be too popular around here, so it emboldened me to shoot my shot with these guys. They'll either be a shoo-in or unanimously rejected.

Forwarded to the PM team.
It's not whether it's popular, but whether it is deemed progressive enough to be included. There are several bands that are not popular among the members in every genre in the archives. But the teams strive to accept or reject bands regardless of whether the members like them or not, based upon whether they come across as having progressive traits.

Thanks Mike (and I'm quite astounded at how quickly and unambiguously they were cleared) - my original statement was just a euphemism as I understand the team strictly looks for progressive qualities despite their personal issues with the music. I guess I just remember one of the suggestions from my early days was dismissed due to some of the "lo-fi" nature of the material, and I figured many of these so-called "cavern-core" death metal (and super dissonant, chaotic modern black metal acts) would not be "popular," i.e. eligible for inclusion due to the murky production. I can absolutely and categorically state that there are more bands cleared by the prog metal team that none of us like, than do. Some can be a struggle to get through, will never be listened to again, and can only be described (subjectively) in negative terms - but they are recognised as being sufficiently prog to be part of PA. Sometimes the listening to submissions for inclusion can be a pleasure, but more often it’s not. 🥴🤢🤮

I personally apologise for being the bearer of some of these less-than-pleasant suggestions. I know you have an aversion to harsh vocals, and extreme progressive metal is my bread-and-butter. Funny enough, I used to abhor vokills when I was younger, and one day when I was sixteen I literally woke up one morning and started loving them and henceforth pursued every metal subgenre I could find.

I used to abhor harsh vocals. I really couldn’t understand how anyone could listen to them. They instantly ruined any music, no matter how promising, as soon as they entered. It’s only thanks to Opeth, that I finally found my gateway into harsh vocals. For years and years, I was recommended Opeth as something I would/should/could enjoy, if I only tried hard enough. So I did. I tried hard. Every new release, I would listen, and would be repulsed. I would go back another day, and listen again. But I just couldn’t do it. Then finally, with the release of Ghost Reveries, I got it.
I doubt I will ever love harsh vocals. I can’t even say that I will ever like them. But I can tolerate them now, and that is enough. There is so much good (and great) music that I love these days, that I could never have listened to, if I hadn’t got over my aversion to, and abhorrence of, harsh vocals. I now find it 50% amusing and 50% frustrating, when I see someone write that they like the music, but they can’t listen to it once the Cookie Monster vocals kick in. Amusing, because I know I felt the same way; and frustrating because I know I tried to do something about it, but most other people won’t. And they will miss out on some great music - which they’ve already acknowledged they like. |

Yeah, i love psychedelic metal. In fact it should be a bonafide category of metal at this point! I made several lists on Rate Your Music for psychedelic subgenres of metal As for Spectral Lore, they're OK. I honestly haven't explored them enough to really remember the details. I would need to check out an album or two since it's been awhile.

Nice Skáphe³ review, S_P. I feel encouraged to try suggesting a few more of these chaotic post-Deathspell Omega types, so keep your eyes peeled (I'm sure you'll already be aware of most if not all of them).
And sorry to be that guy again, Mike, but in the officially uploaded bio, would you be able to restore the quotation marks around "recreate the structures and...sensations of psychedelic substances"?

Ok it's fixed. Damn those disappearing quotation marks. They slip by me a lot.
Sorry that took so long, I've been a little tied up the last couple of days.

S&M? What's that? Sunday & Monday? Never. I'm kind of a Tuesday & Wednesday man myself. (Now where did I put that whip?)
