Lynx biography
Lynx are an American instrumental math rock quartet originally from Boston, Massachusetts, active from 1997 to 2001. The lineup comprises guitarists Mike Hutchins and Dave Konopka, bassist Paul Joyce and drummer Dale Connolly. Informed by jazz and progressive rock, Lynx's brand of melody and angularity recalls Oxes and especially Don Caballero. Lynx's story began when Hutchins, Joyce and Konopka originally met while studying at Massachusetts College of Art. Joyce and Hutchins, veterans of several Boston math rock bands, formed a Slint and Rodan-influenced duo called Glans before inviting Konopka and Connolly to expand their sound beyond the confines of a two-piece.

The band made their debut with a self-titled three-track EP in 1998, eventually moving to Chicago to be closer to the city's influential post-rock scene. Lynx's lone LP, also self-titled, was released through Box Factory Records in 2000, produced by Bob Weston of Shellac. In its wake, the band embarked on a self-booked tour of nearly fifty dates across the continental U.S. Following the tour, Lynx dissolved in 2001, unable to make financial ends meet as musicians. The four ultimately moved away from Chicago to different parts of the east coast, with Konopka ending up in Brooklyn, becoming a founding member of Battles in 2003.

Lynx were approached years later in 2021 by the Computer Students label, which offered to reissue their lone album on vinyl. This spurred the band to reunite and relearn three extant pieces Lynx played on their 2000 tour but never properly recorded. These tracks formed the basis of the Human Speech EP, which was re-released along with a remastered version of their self-titled in 2023.
