4 stars Sometimes you have to have some luck. I ran into this 5-cd compilation when I scanned a record shop in Amsterdam lately. Although I have almost everything BJH has released I was surprised to encounter something I hadn't seen before. And because of its ridiculous low price I decided to purchase it. Which I can recommend now to anyone who likes or loves this incredible band. Among the many compilations that have bene released this one really stands up for it completeness and comprehensiveness. If you want to hear the band evolve, just listen to this one! This compilation is truly comprehensive. It not only contains the first four albums in their entirity, ir also compiles all singles and live recordings for numerous BBC-sessions, quite neatly spread out over the five discs. You hear the band develop from the first attempts, the typically British-folkish pop of 'Early morning' and 'Brother Thrush' till the moving and meaningful epic 'Summer soldier' on Baby James Harvest, a truly GREAT song as Alex Torres' recently published book on BJH-lyrics extensively shows. In between there are so many good songs, be they rock-oriented ('Taking some time on', 'She said'), ballads ('Ursula', 'When dthe world was woken', The iron maiden'), prog ('The poet/After the day') or we'll constructed classical songs ('Moonwater', 'Medicine man')... Because I suspect that this compilation is low priced in many places, don't think and get it, it is more than worth its price! If not then you still have many reasons to purchase it!
