4 stars First of all let me set the record straight: Francesco Zappa was a REAL COMPOSER and he did compose the music on this album. If you don't believe me, check the New Grove Dictionary of music and musicians. If you just happen to have Vol 20 of the 1980 edition handy (what do you mean, you don't have a copy? Shame on you all) then, turn to page 644. SEE, I TOLD YOU SO! This album is consistently voted the "worst Zappa album ever" by Zappa fans. Pah!! What do they know? Personally I prefer it to, say, Chunga's Revenge. It's a light hearted album full of genial humour. The joke, which seems to have passed most people by, is in the presentation of the music. As Dave Ocker's humorous sleeve note's say, much of the music from the 18th century was written and performed for the dinning pleasure of some king, duke or Lord, etc. In other words, it performed the same function as the modern day Musak one hears played in shopping malls, elevators and restaurants (That's not a slight on 18th century music, some of which is excellent, but that's how it was used. ) On the Francesco Album, Zappa took this idea to its extreme and in doing so produced the ultimate Musak album. I LOVE FRANCESCO ZAPPA!
