Sphere of Souls biography
SPHERE OF SOULS was formed by vocalist André Vuurboom following his departure from SUN CAGED in May 2004. Former AUTUMN EQUINOX bassist Kees Harrison was soon recruited to the line-up, closely followed by André's former bandmate, ex-Imperium drummer Patrick Gerritzen. Joost van den Broek, who had also recently left SUN CAGED, soon expressed a keen interest in the project, offering his services as keyboard player and producer for the band's first album. Guitar virtuoso Anand Mahangoe agreed to contribute solos.

André soon began writing material. Demos were sent to the other band members on a regular basis, with Kees visiting on a number of occasions to add bass tracks. At this point the band was still without a rhythm guitarist for the album. A suitable candidate was soon found in former Imperium guitarist Rob Cerrone.

In February 2005 SPHERE OF SOULS began rehearsing as a four-piece (minus Anand Mahangoe and Joost van den Broek). However, it soon became apparent that Patrick Gerritzen was not going to be able to combine his other commitments with the band. In late March 2005 he was replaced by Kees's former bandmate, ex-AUTUMN EQUINOX drummer Ruud van Diepen.

SPHERE OF SOULS' debut album "From the Ashes..." was recorded between May and September of 2005 at Rotterdam's Excess Studios and the home studios of Joost van den Broek and Anand Mahangoe.

In October 2005 Anand Mahangoe, who had contributed solos to "From the Ashes...", became a permanent member of SPHERE OF SOULS.

In November 2005 SPHERE OF SOULS signed to the Finnish progressive rock and metal label Lion Music, which released "From the Ashes..." on Friday, 21 April 2006.

Prior to the album's release, SPHERE OF SOULS made their live debut opening for Ulysses on 1 April 2006. This was followed by a prestigious support slot with VANDEN PLAS on 2 April.

SPHERE OF SOULS play complex progressive metal in a style similar to bands like SUN CAGED,VANDEN PLAS and BEYOND TWILIGHT and are highly recommended to all fans of progressive metal music.

3 stars Sphere of Souls is a young band from Holland delivering a solid prog metal with catchy pieces, but as whole something is missing. The band was formed by an ex member of another dutch prog metal band Sun Caged - André Vuurboom who plays vocals and ocassionaly some guitars. He also has been invited by Lars Eric Mattsson to do some vocal parts on his album War from 2005. Sphere of Souls release 'till now only one album in 2006 named From the ashes. The music is very well structurated and well compose, with catchy pieces and nice interplays between guitar of Anand Mahangoe and the keys of Joost Van den Broek. They did a great job here being the most important part of the album, at least is how I see them. Another thing to mention is that the voice of André Vuurboom fits very well in this kind of music, he has a powerfull voice shifting from powerfull range to mellower aproach. The best example whre his voice truly shines is the firts three pieces: the titled track From the Ashes..., Sweet Sorrow and a mellow piece Loss ( is a dedication in memory of his father), the rest are ok but don't expect to something excellent, only good. Something is bothering me on this album, where the voice turns into a robotic one, to plastic to industrial, on couple of pieces is unlistenable, the sound is not I want to hear on these pieces. Now as a whole is a good album, no doubt, but don't expect to something groundbreaking or never heared befor. Anyway From the ashes desearves 3 stars , maybe the next album will be better or at least as good as this one. Not really recommended but if you want to check this band you wont be dissepointed, worth couple of spins.
