What are some non prog albums to come out this year that you think are really good. State the album and artist, what genre it is, what your rating out of 10 would be, and a little bit of your opinion on it.

I'll start with

Voices by Phantogram

Genre: Synthpop, Indie Electronic, Trip Hop

Rating: 9.5/10

Voices is the second album by Phantogram. Voices maintains kind of a dark synthpop sound that is sprinkled with elements of trip hop, ambient, and breakbeat. There is a lot of heavy bass, catchy synth melodies, and crisp clean production. Leading lady Sarah Barthel's voice is perfect and fits the music so well. Her voice is one of the best in electronic music since Beth Gibbons. If you are a fan of indie electronic, synthpop, or trip hop and you have somehow managed to not listen to this album then do yourself a favor and do that now. This album will be stuck in you head for a while. I bought this album when it was released in February and I still go back to it daily. Its that damn good.

The Soundcarriers - Entropicalia
The Antlers - Familiars

United Waters - Sunburner

It's a side project by a guy from a noise band (Mouthus), but it seems to be an experiment to see what happens if you take reasonably ordinary, tuneful songs and make them blurry to the point that you're not really sure what you're hearing.  The effect is kind of impressionistic - no two listens are really the same, it's all so woozy and murky, but with really nice melodies hidden under the surface.  It's kind of like being on NyQuil.

It's pitiful but the only prog album on my top 10 list right now is Swans' To Be Kind. I expect to like Boris, Agollach, Wovenhand, and maybe Kayo Dot (I have mixed feelings about what I've heard).

As far as those other releases, I will list my 5 favorites thus far (Iceage takes the top right now because it's the newest and I am obsessed with it):

Iceage— Plowing Into the Field of Love (Post-punk that is pretty and well-crafted while simultaneously feeling like it could destroy itself at any moment.)
Parquet Courts— Sunbathing Animal (A punk album where lyrics command attention and admiration over sprawling, ramshackle arrangements. Pavement is the closest comparison).
Flying Lotus— You're Dead! (A bright, fatal swirl of IDM, jazz-freakouts, R&B, hip-hop, and even Canterbury. Probably more thought provoking thematically than any of his previous releases.)
Ambrose Akinmusire— An Imagined Saviour is Far Easier to Paint (A gorgeous and unique post-bop album that refreshingly grapples with philosophical themes in a way a lot of modern jazz shies away from).
Liars— Mess (An eerie, anxious synthpop album by the experimental rock trio Liars. Perhaps one of their most consistent yet).

Boris aren't on PATongue
Anyway who gives a flying fuuk? They're certainly progressive and more importantly very good. Noise is an album I completely forgot about in my earlier post actuallyEmbarrassed Damn I'm getting old or something - maybe a case of ebola?

Another one I forgot to mention is the new Brian Jonestown Massacre. I haven't heard it yet, but I had a dream in which it got airplay, and it was quite literally orgasmic. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

For a "prog" recommendation though - try checking out Syd Arthur's (Siddhartha hoho) newest http://www.stereogum.com/1681410/stream-syd-arthur-sound-mirror-stereogum-premiere/mp3s/album-stream/" rel="nofollow - Sound Mirror . It's very seldom you find this great vocals in modern prog imo.

Last year most of my favorites were by bands not on the archives...this year it's pretty much the opposite so far. Hard to think of great albums by band's not on this site regarding 2014...

1. Evenoire - Herons (atmospheric female-fronted gothic metal with a folky and even sometimes proggish vibe. In a genre that just gets poppier and poppier, this group stands out by not aiming to be another bland Within Temptation clone. Fantastic stuff)

2. Nana Mizuki - Supernal Liberty (Quirky crazy over-the-top pop music with snazzy guitar leads, off kilter stylistic switches and soaring female vocals. One of the only consistently good big-selling acts out of Japan.)

3. Phobocosm - Deprived (Nasty ugly filthy sick twisted cavernous creepy death metal abominations. In other words, entertaining)

Must be other stuff out there...I should at least check out the newest Boris or that Interpol album (love Turn On The Bright Lights but so far nothing else by them).

Midge URE- Fragile (amazing and slightly proggy!)
John Foxx & the Belbury Circle- Empty Avenues (funny how the 2 former Ultravox lungs are dishing it out!)

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

It's pretty average by BJM standards, but definitely worth a buy.  It's got that certain something that all their albums have.  Just no big surprises this time, it's reasonably similar to "Aufheben", the prior album, but maybe a shade less "ethnic".

Now that I think of it, their album "Who Killed Sgt Pepper?" is one you should put near the top of your list if you haven't gotten it yet - it's like a big insane party record for crazy people who dig spaced out dancing and wigging out.  It's a trip.  It took me a while to like it because I don't like danceable stuff much, but after a while I discovered its cool charms, and it's a belated entry to my BJM favorites list.

Haven't seen any discussion about this, and I haven't heard it myself, so it might just be because it's not any good LOL, but if there's some fans of the band here, and I think there is, I just wanted to give you a heads up, if you weren't already aware, that there's a new Supersilent album out, 12.

Just heard my first album from them, 6, just now. Loved it! Safe to say I'll be getting the rest of their discography, as soon as my wallet allows me to. LOL

Tadah!! Yet another Supersilent fan on boardBig smile Now there's about 3 of usLOL

Quick note of caution though Audun: 6 is by far their easiest listen. I know you've been digging the avant fusion thang lately, so I gather you're going to dig em just the same. I just thought I'd let you know in advanceSmile

Did not know about a new one thoughShocked Thanks for the heads up!

BTW seeing as you just did me a solid there, then let me point you in the direction of something I'm almost certain that you'll dig. Big time! Guillaume Perret & His Electric Epic. Check out any of their albums, really, I haven't heard anything sub par from them, but then again they've only made 3 as of yet. Think Birds & Buildings only instead of the mad organs you get this supernatural saxomophone that goes through all kinds of effects.

Checked out those vids in the other thread, and wow! Some really cool stuff, especially that live performance. I'll defenitely try to get a hold of their albums. Thanks, man!

Speakin' of saxophones, have you heard of Møster! ? Solo project of Ultralyd's saxophonist Kjetil Møster, where he surrounds himself with guys from Elephant9 and Motorpsycho. Two albums out. Haven't heard the first one, but the last one, Inner Earth (2014), is excellent.

^ Having listened to a couple more albums by Kjetil Møster I'm positive this is fusion that fits the site, so this should've been posted in a "great prog albums of the year"-thread, or something like that. LOL

Hopefully the Jazz Rock/Fusion team agrees, as his 2014 album, "Inner Earth", is one of my absolute favourites of the year.

Robert Plant - Ceaseless Roar

and then about 50 Buckethead albums...

Hi Audun!

Sorry I just saw you'd answered me back...on the 2 of November no less! Damn, I'm sorry dude.
But yes, I was thinking you, me and Phil when I posted that lol.

Thanks for the Møster rec - currently using my phone and have misplaced my earbuds, so I will have to wait until I get back on my computer. Safe to say that your intial info sum up already has me salivating! Quick thing though: you said the elephant9 guys but does that also include Torstein Lofthus? I looooove his drumming style(s) and could just imagine it in some schizophrenic meeting with the Ultralyd sax.

Oh and you're welcome regarding Guillaume Peret. Like I said, any album of theirs is worth having. I started chronologically with them though and can definitely recommend that to others, as it very neatly illustrates how they've evolved.

It's Motorpsycho/Grand General drummer Kenneth Kapstad, on both albums, David. The rest of the personel is Elephant9 bassist Nikolai Eilertsen (also both albums), Storløkken (keys, of course, on last year's live album "Edvard Lygre Møster") and Motorpsycho guitarist Hans Magnus Ryan (on "Inner Earth").
