So it begins.
Uh...yeah, go G Men, would like to see more a team this year and not Captain Eli flying solo.

Free agency is off and running. Some pretty big moves being made, but I'll make this first post about the giants.
Giants to sign R. Jennings (RB), G Schwartz (G), and O Schofield (LB). P Hillis re-signed with the team as well. L Joseph signs a 5 year deal with Minnesota and reports are implying that Andre Brown may be expendable...which is not what I want to hear. Though that last bit is still in pre-rumor stage.

Yeah, was sad to see Linval go...great player. Guess that how cap casualties go.
So far G men seem to be aiming for OL and DBs, as well as RBs. I hear Stevie Brown is likely to (if not) re signing so that'd be great.

Indeed he (Stevie) has! They also resigned the kicker...but better news is they agreed to terms with Beason.
Reports are coming in that Jacoby Jones will be visiting the Giants as well. If they have the $$ to sign him that would be great. Even if it's just a special teams boost...would be nice to have a dangerous return man. And the one player I would like the giants to at least consider is TE Owen Daniels...who was released by the Texans yesterday.
All in all though, I'm glad the giants are being active in free agency.

As a Giants fan, what else is there to look forward to?
Though thankfully, F1 is starting up soon and I am kinda a little bit excited for Baseball this year (lol we'll see how that goes) so I can distract myself soon. Until then, Giants have made a lot of offseason moves I've liked, glad they didn't pull a Colts and decided NOW to upgrade the team..not hold on for 4 more years

I'm happy to see the Ravens sign Dennis Pitta (TE),Eugene Monroe (LT),and Jacoby Jones (WR) to 4-5 year deals for very decent money that still leaves us with some money to spend in FA.
Seeing as how Kubiak is now our OC and he loves Owen Daniels I expect to see him in purple and black. We need another TE with the departure of Ed Dickson.
Ravens center Gino Gradkowski will be nothing but a perennial under performer and we must move on.He just doesn't have what it takes to play center at a high level.I want Alex Mack, but that probably won't happen.
Need another WR but Tate is gone and Decker just signed with the Jets.I don't care for Nicks and signing Jones to a 4 year deal might cool us down toward Edelman.Steve Smith might be a good, shorter term option.
I'm rambling..........................

After yesterday, I would be depressed to be a Giants fan. I think signing Schwartz was a great move, but given they could have gotten Schofield and Jennings for under $2M combined easily last July. I'm not sure what they saw out of Schofield's 144 snaps last year that warrants him going from about $900,000 to $8M for 2 years. Jennings I would start questioning his age at this point (I think he's past his prime), and they're giving him almost $2M when it could have been about $630,000 last summer.
And don't get me started on Peyton Hills.
I think the most interesting thing yesterday was the Saints signing Jarius Byrd, because it tells me they don't expect to hold on to Jimmy Graham. They're going to have to restructure a ton of contracts to cover him in the future, plus the Falcons and Bucs got significantly better yesterday. Of course, the Saints have the same issue the Broncos had this season (lots of stars at the top, and next to nobody in terms of backups). We'll see what happens in the draft, but I think the Saints need to stay incredibly healthy to have any chance of winning another SB.

Hate to see Golden Tate leave Seattle for Detroit. A receiver who gets yards after the catch is a valuable asset. I hope putting faith in Percy Harvin works out.

I don't have a problem with it. Is it more then is necessary? Probably. But it's not crippling. I'm more miffed that all this RB stuff is going to most likely exclude A Brown from the roster...which is a shame.

Phil beat me to it, I have no problem with Hillis per se (and he was one of the only 2 RBs to show ANY fight (or ability to break a man)) but yeah, if it all costs us our best RB Andre Brown that would really suck.
But nah not depressed, I think the Giants have made good moves overall, they usually draft well, we shall see but so far so good.

I disagree with Hills. I think there are plenty of RBs out there who can easily get you 3.4 YPG. But oh well. We'll find out.
I just don't understand why the Giants front office and scouts thought it was worthwhile to wait a year, and only get a higher price tag out of the whole thing when they could have gone much cheaper last summer.

Well guess it doesn't really bug me as much because it's really not the most pressing of needs. I knew the name Geoff Schwartz but just looked into him, PFF had him as their highest ranked FA O lineman, and Giants got him for a good price, so I'm quite happy.
Resigning Stevie Brown was big, if he can return to 2012 form that'd be THREE good safeties. And good to have insurance in case Rolle goes back to sucking, or Will Hill can't stay out of trouble McBride was a very solid CB, so as always Giants have made not flashy moves but overall I'm happy so far. The RB situation is screwy but eh...not too concerned. Don't get me wrong though, Hillis is a far cry from his glory years. He at least showed heart and/or strength. Our other backs are all too small or too broken. Like how it took Brandon Jacobs 5 tries I think to get that 1 yd TD, it used to take him only 3!
|

From what I understand Hillis is the best blocking RB we have (or at least had...not sure how Jennings is on that account). That raises his value a bit IMO.
And excellent news on Schwartz! I hadn't heard of him...I was just excited they were addressing the need.

Since this seems to be giants news central...
Justin Tuck has signed with the Raiders. 2 yr, $11 mil...which was offered to the giants to match (which they obviously declined to do). I'll miss him...but I wouldn't have paid him that much either.

Steve Smith is out at Carolina. That seems a bit surprising to me honestly, given that something must have happened behind closed doors that was enough to get him really miffed. But regardless, it looks like he'll have his pick of the Pats, Broncos (haven't they already upset the balance enough with FA? lol), and Ravens. I think Baltimore is the most logical choice because they're normally perennial SB contenders and they need another WR badly. Plus they play Carolina next season, and Smith's quote here is perfect:
I want to make sure that whatever team I go to, they’re going to get the best, in-shape 35-year-old guy they can get. If that happens to run through Bank of America Stadium, put your goggles on ’cause there’s going to be blood and guts everywhere.
I would be scared if I were the Panthers after hearing that lol.

Looks like we picked up Dontay Moch from the Cards after they released him on waivers. Good to see that the Bungles are adding some depth to linebacker. All I remember about him is that he's fairly fast, and that we was put on IR for most of last year because of recurring migraines.

Giants have signed Walter Thurmond from Seattle, very good CB! As well as kick returner who was supposedly one of the best last year, (we havn't had a good one in like 5 years now!). Supposedly eyeing Dom Rodgers-Cromartie and centers from the Pats and Broncos.
I'm quite happy, overall I think the G men have made a lot of good moves, and aiming to (finally) fix their weaknesses.

Wow! I heard about them trying to get DRC to join, but not the Thurmond signing. I've also read about Anthony Spencer and Mario Manningham vistiting the giants in the near future.
Crazy...I can't remember the last time the giants were this active in free agency. Good to see them trying to address the needs.

Go Pack.
Great to see they re-signed Shields and Quarless but Peppers? Not sure about that, he's about 46.
And as for Raji, did he deserve a new contract after last season? No way. Let's hope his contract has a big "incentive" aspect to it .

It is very unlike them, but we all know why: Jerry Reese is on the hot seat.
Least it hasn't been on only flashy players or wasteful, some damn great signings and I'm sure he'll keep up his fairly good draft record.
Sproles to Philly though certainly didn't make me happy though.
Edit: Oh damn, I had no idea about Holliday! That is exciting, we never have a returner. Even Hixon back in 07 was just decent, I can't recall ever having an exciting return guy.

I like the Sproles move and it came at the right price, but I'm not really buying that he's going to be some hugely significant offensive weapon for us.
Holliday has some interesting fumbling problems. He can be a double edged sword. Playing with fire with him and DRC actually. Though I think the DRC move will work out just fine.

That's fair, but I like the upside of Holliday.

Wow thet Jets get Michael Vick. Seems like a long time since they've had a good quarterback no ? They released Sanchez and it will be interesting to see if anyone picks him up as a backup. Rumours are that Schaub is being traded to the Raiders, and Houton did just sign Fitzpatrick who the Titans released recently.

I'm really happy with the way the Ravens and Ozzie are handling things since free agency started.
Let's look at what they did with a little over 22 million under the cap:
- Restructured Terrell Suggs (OLB/DE) contract - Resigned Dennis Pitta (TE) to a 5 year deal - Resigned Eugene Monroe (LT) to a 5 year deal (for well under what he was expecting the market to offer, thank God we didn't put the franchise tag on him) - Resigned Jacoby Jones (WR/PR,KR) to a 4 year deal - Signed Steve Smith (WR) for 3 years (I think he will be a good fit here) - Resigned Daryl Smith (LB) for 4 years (I'm REALLY happy with this one) - Resigned Jeremy Miles and signed Darian Stewart (S),both from the Rams. Not bad but they will probably contribute more to special teams, especially Miles. We need more depth here.
Needs I think that still need to be addressed are center, another tight end and safety.I would love to see Blount here,he would add more depth to our running game.I also worry about the day Flacco gets hurt and we need to rely on our backup because Tyrod Taylor is meh.

Unless they can acquiring D-jax. That would certainly bolster more of an offensive presence.
Again, until Vick gets injured.
And either way, most reports are now talking about when D-jax gets out of Philly instead of if. Which I like.

Not sure where the eagles are going with that. The combo of D-Jax and Sproles would have been beastly, especialy if Cooper keeps it up and Maclin returns near 100%. But hey...I'm glad the giants don't have to defend that twice a year now!

The loss of D Jax is indeed good news for us. Especially since Will Hill is facing his third drug charge... the team is "livid" and all signs (and logic) point to him getting the boot. Dude was a pretty good safety. Shame.
It's been VERY under reported, but Eli underwent that surgery. Concerning since his age is rising and injuries are a funny thing...but supposedly he's recovering well and expects to be fully ready. This is Eli, I do have faith he'll indeed be ready for the season to begin, that lanky b*****d is tougher than many think!
That said, it was odd the surgery happened so late...one would think maybe he wasn't progressing well enough, OR I heard he was playing basketball in NC or something like that, and perhaps re injured it. Anyway, just gunna pray all goes as we expect and he's A OK to go.
Fans may have jumped off the Eli bandwagon quicker than they got on, but I still say let's go without him and see how well we do! Anyway, reports are the offense HAS been more up tempo and attacking, with Eli claiming it's more like the Packers than Gilbride's. I am excited, I can't lie. Also this is relevant:

Unfortunately, with him on the redskins we still have to deal with him twice a year. Hopefully RGIII will continue regression and it wont be a huge issue.
Agreed with the Eli's ankle. All reports say he should be ready to go for mini-camps and all that training crap (may miss an OTA or two), so I'm not too worried, just confused. Continuing Gmen news...Wilson's recovery is reportedly going well...no more pain and all that. Still needs medical clearance to play but signs are looking good. 10 years ago today the Giants draft-traded for Eli. There was so much intense debate back in HS about how he'd turn out, then would he ever not suck and all that jazz. I say the answer is pretty clear now
And to think, THAT is the face which become Tom Brady's nightmare

Well, it's that time of year...draft time!I never had the patience to watch it, esp when you can just check wikipedia. Oh and the fact that by now it may not end till June
As expected, Clowney was the #1 pick. The kid with a mountain of talent but only good year under his college belt, and nearly as big a mountain of questions about his motivation and attitude. That said, I'm sure the Texans got a quality player who will hopefully play without question now. JJ Watt pretty much dominated games on his own, with Clowney in the mix...that could be one helluva pass rush.
Aaaaaaaaaand with the 12th pick in the 2014 draft the New York Giants have chose: WR Odell Beckham Jr out of LSU 1st round pick on a wideout, thank you!! This makes me happy. Let's hope we stock up on some more linemen and offensive players. Tough he's been shaky lately, I trust Jerry Reese and players from LSU generally seem to work out so I like this move.

The Lions took TE Eric Ebron from North Carolina with the 10th pick. I'd be happy about this if I didn't feel like Stafford already has enough weapons. The defense needs major attention, especially in the secondary, and I see all these DBs being taken in the first round and I just shake my head.

You screwed up my giants draft plan as well.
But I'm happy with what the Gmen did. 2nd round I imagine they will target either TE or T/G depending on best available.

Also,
before the draft I thought that the best position for Houston to be in was to take Clowney #1 and then take Carr at #1 of round two. That option is sstill open for them, and even though the name has some tarnished history in that city IMO they would easily be in consideration for "winning" the draft (at least the early rounds).

The fact of the matter is, for Houston, they don't have a QB worthy of starting for them right now, so they have to do something. I read somewhere that there's a rumor going around that they could be in talks with the Pats to trade for Ryan Mallett. For what, I don't know, but I have to think there are better options out there. Also, it sounds like Mike Glennon could be on the move from Tampa and if it's true, Houston should pounce on that one. That guy showed a few times last year that he has the potential to be not only a great QB, but to also look like Napoleon Dynamite while doing it.

Pettigrew has off the charts measurables but he isn't good. You don't have a good WR3. I think an elite TE prospect was welcome and another weapon needed.

Sam Bradford hasn't even been average in the league so I would say you could upgrade with some replacement level / aging vets or by drafting JFF/Bortles.

LOL! @ Cleveland
The fan reaction video was great, it was like each one of them won the lottery. So much joy and hope for the city right now. In 2 years we'll be ridiculing his epic bust
OK OK I have no idea. He may be fine. I really don't know much, anyone know how Texas A&M works? If it's a somewhat normal offense, he may develop/turn out fine. If it's one of those whacky ones, sorry I still have not seen one really work out yet.
While I do love the pick, still a bit on edge about the O Line. I still want to say should've taken the best Tackle available, what's the point of another good WR if Eli is on his back? Buuuuut still plenty to go. If the Giants address the line needs all will be fine.
Detroit has added a real offensive weapon. That team could be even more terrifying now.
If Clowney decides he wants to play now..Houston can have some kind of crazy defense. Still have to wonder about their QB situation though. Derek Carr was well regarded and is still there....imagine if Houston was to take Carr!
Also: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. That is all.

I have to laugh at this statement, only because I look at the last couple of seasons when they were supposed to take off and be a real contender in the North. Hell, they couldn't even win the division with Rodgers and Cutler being out! Stafford and that supposedly "high flying offense" couldn't seem to find their own @$$ at times. Yes, I seem like a pessimist, but I prefer to look at it as though I'm a realist. I've lived with the reality of the team's terrible decisions year after year for 20+ seasons now.

Eh, thing is I never was tooooo sold on them personally because they were lacking on defense (you still need some to win). In fact, that pretty much goes into what you said about failing to take an injured division. As for offense, as beastly as Calvin is you can't rely on just 1 WR for all your output. Especially since Stafford can develop Calvin addiction, like Eli had with Plaxico. You just mindlessly lob balls in his direction and pray it'll work out. LOL
That said, Stafford has been getting better, and he has another weapon now so that is still a scary thought.

I give a little benefit to Bradford as he hasn't really had weapons and has had a couple different offensive systems to learn in his small tenure in St. Louis. He does seem a bit prone to injury, which for me, is his biggest issue.
That said...if there isn't improvement this year, time to move on. I do think getting a quality/veteran QB to back him up is a good idea though.

Yeah, Bradford's best year was his rookie year which was quite solid, if not spectacular, and had moments of that "it" you want in a QB. I really do think his lack of, most everything, and that horrid O line is to blame. Gotta feel for the guy, it's like David Carr, entire career shot because of a sh*tty team.
True though, regardless of reason you need to take the axe eventually. Agreed, get a new QB and if this year is no good from Bradford he's gotta get the boot.
WOW. Josh Gordon faces a possible year suspension for another failed drug test. I really feel awful for Cleveland fans. After the high of drafting Johnny this could be a crash harder than heroin itself If this was to happen, what a blow to the balls for the Browns.

I thought it was curious that they didn't immediately go for their secondary. That's where they need the biggest improvement defensively. I guess they're figuring with their front 4, they're going to bring enough pressure that most passing attacks won't be an issue. We'll see though.

Well, I don't know much about college players who aren't the top names so going just on positions taken and opinions of those in the know...Giants had a good draft. Beckham sounds like a great pick up, and supposedly center Weston Richburg was a top center prospect (and fills a huge need). Bromley takes the space of Linval Joseph, though I'll miss that guy, and we got a back, safety, corner and linebacker so all solid moves that fill needs.
|

I do wish the Giants took Tre Mason (RB) instead of Bromley in the third round. Obviously I don't really know him but most of the experts thought it was a reach to take him in the third...but hopefully it'll pan out. I'm happy with the runningback we got at the end of the day though.
But yes...OB Jr. and Richburg gets a thumbs up. Based on need I think we did pretty good...though that Corner we probably could have passed on...but at that stage in the draft it's all stabs in the dark.

Chris Snee has retired. Simply can't play anymore with his injuries.
Was a top lineman in his prime, and crucial part of the 2007 SB. Injuries derailed his career, they say in 2012 and he's just never recovered. I think it began in 2011 because he was mysteriously pretty terrible then, but one thing for sure: He never did recover Thanks for being a great Giant.
On a more upbeat story, David Wilson has been cleared to play. I actually never thought he would again, I just hope he can stay healthy after an injury like that. Right when he was breaking out into the beast we all thought he could be..but hey maybe he hasn't lost anything. We shall see.
|

^ True that. Can't say after last year I'm too distraught starting a whole new O-line, but Snee did do great things for the gmen. Shame injuries had to take him out in the end...but those two rings should keep him plenty warm at night.
And good news on Wilson. I've heard for awhile he's been close to getting clearance...I'm glad it's finally been granted. Maybe now we won't need 10 RBs in a season!

Oh for sure, his presence will be missed but no doubt he has not been good the last 3 seasons. Losing him physically shouldn't be a major blow.
At least that Pugh became pretty darn good by the second half, we'll see how all the rest works out. Especially Beatty, not sure the issue there (injuries as well?) he had a great year at left tackle in '12, then sucked horribly in '13.
|

True. I suspect a semi-shaky first half and then a serviceable to fairly good second half (barring injuries, which for the Gmen is impossible). Te group gelling I can see being the major issue, as well as Richburg's newness to the NFL game.
Yeah...can't say what happened there. Maybe he just hit the wall? Injury is a good guess...but I don't recall anything being reported....not that that means much.

Yeah, I mean we all know the deal with pre season.. Though Eli was 6 of 7 I heard so they totally blew away the 70% accuracy goal LOL!
As we've heard by now, David Wilson has re injured his neck, and has now called it a career. Real shame, so young, so much potential, and he was just breaking out it seemed. What can ya do though? It was a shocker he was cleared to play at all, and with this most recent injury to the neck...god one serious blow to it and dude could be paralyzed or worse. His career is over, but as he said at least he can literally walk away...
Best of luck David!
At least we seem to be good at RB. Rashad Jennings should be solid and I'm excited about Andre Williams.

Well, the pre season is nearing it's end which means real football is almost here!
As always, can't say this pre season has meant much to me. Ryan Nassib and Corey Washington are looking like Montana and Rice, but they are mainly playing against other second teams. Still, is nice to see we may have another potential WR, and Nassib could be a competent back up (still wish the pick was spent not on a QB but no point beating that dead horse)
Things are going as I expected, the implementation of a new offensive scheme, while also rebuilding an o line and dealing with new players, will take some growing pains. It will be a rough start to the year, and it really depends how a lot of question marks turn out, in regards to how the season will go. Realistically can't expect anything more than the .500ish zone. I'll pray the defense turns out as good as it could potentially be, and the offense gets on track for a second half run.
Outside Giant news, after actually allowing a tad bit more defensive play the NFL has remembered offense sells and won't let the defense touch a player now I wonder if all the talk about Seattle's secondary and perhaps them getting a lot of breaks has been an influence on the crack down. Before the rabid Seattle fans freak out relax, I'm not accusing here, just echoing the sentiment of the blow hards on TV.

That seems to be the common consensus, that it's been a "message" and will subdue once season starts. Least I hope! Despite a lot of crap in recent years, the NFL is still very enjoyable to watch but this indeed makes it unwatchable.
