My long awaited vinyl reissue of IQ's brilliant Ever arrived today. On the deck immediately and it sounded HORRIFIC - very flat and very slow. I searched the cover - no mention of 33rpm, so I tried it at 45rpm. Perfect. I wish they'd warned us!

I'm lucky my Pink Triangle Anniversary can play at 45rpm (sorry Linn LP 12 owners!) but this is only the second time I've come across this (the other is The Enid's The Spell). Does anyone know of another?

So if you've received yours and haven't tried it, or if it is still to arrive - be warned!

I know a couple but they're not prog.  The first 2 hardcore punk albums I bought (Dead Kennedy's "In God We Trust Inc" & The Butthole Surfers "Live PCPEP") were full size LP's and I threw them on the turntable and couldn't believe what I was hearing...then I tried it at 45rpm and all was good LOL

I have experienced this with a Hare Krshna album on which was featuring Claudio Rocchi.

Some of the Klaus Schulze productions on the 'Innovative Communication' label play at 45 r.p.m. Others I have : News From Babel, Art Bears 2nd & 3rd albums, Anglagard's 'Viljans Oga', Primus' 'Green Naugahyde' are a few that come to mind. Oh how weird it was when I played them initially      (Dagmar sounded especially strange....)

"Third" by Portishead also plays at 45rpm as does my version of Radiohead's "Kid A" - I think it has something to do with sound quality..

I bought some full-length records by The Dead C a few weeks ago, and two of them came with "bonus track" records that played at 45 RPM.

Bingo. With vinyl, the faster, the better, insofar as the equipment is up to it. (78+ rpm might be too fast for some players; I don't know.) Faster playback means the material is more spread out physically within the groove, allowing for greater clarity and, potentially, a lower noise floor (don't quote me on that; I think it might have more to do with the groove spacing on the record side of things). There are many audiophile album (re-)pressings done at 45 rpm for this reason.

Correct on all counts and the sound quality on Ever is truly exceptional. 78 rpm can overstress some styli, leading to damage.

The other thing is that they have room for 45rpm, as it is a double album so there's not much music on each side, so they can spread it out.

Nash The Slash released this one with the instructions to play it at 45rpm or 33.333rpm, either speed would render the intended results. I preferred 45rpm, but it did sound surprisingly natural either way. I think it contained elements recorded at both speeds in the mix. Anyone have this? Unfortunately I no longer do.

I also have an album by West-Coast psych band 'Moby Grape' which has a song on side 1 (track 6, from memory) to be played at 78, the rest of the album is cut at 33. I have never played that track, nor had access to a player which can do 78rpm.

There are a lot of jazz albums being done in 45rpm.......Miles Davis Kind of Blue is suppose to be magical. The wider groove allows record mastering for higher frequency and levels. It really helps the inner groove portion of the vinyl and reduces distortion, inner groove distortion, faster revolutions the needle covers more area versus at 33-1/3 slower speed covering less territory.

For 78rpm you need a special cartridge usually

Hi,

Better yet ... go listen to Robert Schroeder's first album on Klaus Schulze's label ... you could play it at both speeds and one was really heavy teutonic, scary, crazy stuff, and the other one was just some flowery/hippy sh*t!

I've never encountered an LP sized disc that was 45 speed.  Of note, I did encounter the Monty Python Matching Tie and Handkerchief album that had one side with two sets of grooves running parllel, so depending on how your needle landed you'd get one set of material or the other.  I didn't know this in advance and I don't think people were forewarned when it was realeased so it made for a great practical joke.

All I know is that if you play the opening track of Black Sabbath's Vol. 4, Wheels of Confusion, at 45 rpm it sounds exactlylike Born To Be Wild. Until Ozzy comes in but you will want to keep listening because it is hilarious.

I must try that some time......sounds amusing. I recall years ago I had a knackered copy of Magma's MDK album, and when a mate was over, I did the whole 'turntable scratchy' thing with it and tried to rap along with it (in Kobaian - my interpretation of it anyway). We were in stitches..... .
I have a respectable turntable these days and a pristine re-issue of MDK that I dare not fool around with.

And I saw this happen to the Monty Python album on live radio ... it was hilarious, and I went out and immediately bought the album ... had to have that one!

Definitely not prog rock and while it should be played at 45, being a single and all, the flipside of Madness' Our House is a number called Walking With Mr Wheeze - which plays superbly and surprisingly well at 33.

Good fun.Wink

Yes, and the entry points to the 2 grooves are not equally spaced, so you've more chance of getting one groove than the other. I thought I was going mad when I played it and got something completely different to what I was used to from the first 4 or 5 plays.

The Cocteau Twins’ “Victorialand” I initially played at 33, and not being especially familiar with the band’s output as a whole at that point, it took a couple more plays before I noticed it was supposed to be played at 45. I thought the vocals sounded a little too surreal, even for them, though actually some tracks sound as good if not better at 45.
