I was listening to the Black Sabbath song "Tomorrow's Dream" with a friend yesterday and I asked him, "Have you ever noticed how a few Black Sabbath songs have these weird bleeping sounds in them?" He said he never noticed. So I pointed it out but he said he wasn't hearing it. I moved my hand each time it happened, but he still didn't hear it and told me I was crazy. I've noticed them forever both listening to them on my computer, CD, and my friend's vinyl, so it's not like a scratch or anything.

Someone, tell me I'm not the only one who hears this! And if anyone happens to know, what is making that sound? What it intentional? I always thought it was kind of interesting but I never heard anyone mention it.

I do remember hearing "Paranoid" on the radio a few times, and when Tony gets a spot to play that riff there's a chance I will hear this "plyum-plyum". Something strange. Maybe it's Tony accidentally hitting some muted treble strings.

With some of the Black Sabbath tracks during the hard riffing sections I pick up what I percieve to be Iommi's chord hand squeaking on the strings as he changes chords. I seem to remember that "Tomorrow's Dream" had that effect although maybe not on all of the "Volume 4" release printings.

Ah, so I wasn't going crazy. I thought it was coming from the guitar somehow.
I just listened to Paranoid, and I'm not sure if I noticed anything in particular, although I don't doubt there's something there, but I could definitely hear his hand scraping against the strings which might show how his way of playing causes those little sounds.
The sound on Tomorrow's Dream is maybe the most clear. It's during the verse and seems intentional because it's always on the "2 and" beat.

I just listened, and I think what you're hearing is some background percussion - they use s cowbell and tambourine together, and I think the two together make what seems like a high clicking sound.  This particularly happens on the verse, in a rhythmic fashion as you said.  I couldn't detect any hand-scrape-on-guitar-strings sounds.

It's my favorite Black Sabbath song, and for as long as I've listened to it, I've never singled out those sounds before, so thanks for pointing it out .

On a somewhat related note, I have always wondered what the HELL is that "beep" in Aqualung????

At 4:37 in this clip.

I know that Iommi goes to a wrong chord somewhere in Cornucopia, it cracks me up every time.....I think it's just before the last verse....

I don't know, maybe some technical defect in record only.

But listen here carefully, here is some REAL "beep" at 1:04 !!!!

But seriously - you are true. In 70's I had Aqualung on magnetic tape only and I was think long time, that  some "black out" is on my tape.

I always thought that chord changing slide noise was totally cool Thumbs Up

Yeah it was and is Iommis style, hear it on a lot of his playing.

Gotta be a finger slide along a string.

I agree - love that sound. Iommi had that Industrial accident with his fingers causing him to use a thimble that he used to attach to a finger - possibly that had something to do with his style?

In Focus' "Le Clochard" this "side effect" sounds so natural, that it is inherent part of beautiful music atmosphere for me.

I think the most important thing his accident/thimble situation did for Black Sabbath is they were the first band to tune guitar and bass down 2 full steps to D.  Iommi has said that he had to downtune to allow him to bend strings without extreme pain.  That down-tuned sound put the heavy in heavy metal Headbanger
For those unaware, Iommi has been battling cancer for over a year now and continues to tour and record in between 6 week chemo/recovery sessions.  Tony is the real life "Iron Man" Bowdown

It is indeed Ian Anderson's finger sliding on his acoustic. On my equipment it definitely is not a "beep" at 4:37 but a squeak on a string.
