I'm a bit confused. Genesis is such a popular band on this site, and rightly so. But when it comes to their frontman, one of the most colorful stage performers, one of the most creative composers, one of the most innovative artists, and one of the most successful musical pioneers in the history of music....nobody has anything to say. Peter Gabriel and his music are a "one off" experience. There is nothing else like it. And the fact that he has had chart success only makes his story more astounding, because his music, when compared to other music on the charts, was some seriously weird crap!! Yet his albums get fairly mediocre ratings on here. The threads get largely ignored. It doesn't affect my personal life or anything, but....I just don't don't get it. Gabriel is an "other-worldly" experience...in a good way. His music has "progressed" more than anyone's. Surely that has to be as important and vital as someone singing about knights and playing in pointlessly convoluted time signatures.

^ I don't either and i appreciate the post.
I think people don't respond to his solo career because it isn't the archetype prog music he was making before. Unfortunately some people can only listen to that stuff or the music that emulates it to the point it's boring.
1. In Your Eyes
2. Sledgehammer
3. No Self-Control
4. Sky Blue (I love the Live version more)
5. The Family and the Fishing Net
6. Signal To Noise
7. Here Comes the Flood (Again, live is better)
8. Red Rain
9. Mercy Street
10. Family Snapshot
Close enough.

I agree with the sentiment but do we really need to deride other prog fans? I mean, to 99% of the world everyone on this forum would be labelled a pretentious w**ker. Whether anyone prefers listening to Marillion or whoever over Peter Gabriel, then whatever, good for them.
My list would read (almost exclusively live versions of songs)
1. Downside Up 2. Secret World 3. In Your Eyes 4. Solsbury Hill 5. Shaking the Tree 6. Blood Eden 7. Red Rain 8. Across the River 9. Signal to Noise 10. More Than This

8)Washing of the water
7)Exposure
6)A different drum
5)Wallflower
4)No self- control

I've always found him hard work. I can cope with an album every 10 years on average. Interestingly I am the only prog reviewer to give his debut 5 stars which perhaps proves a point.

Just to follow up on the tread starter's general thoughts on PG, and why he is not getting the attention you might expect. Compared to the respect he recives based on his Genesis outputs.
I think it all about the people comming to PA, most of them are either looking for 70's style prog. or they came from Metal.
PG's solo output on the other hand, is more in line with what became New Wave, and (later) very World Music inspired.
If you take Fripp's solo, (the not ambient parts) you get the same picture.
Exposure, A total masterpiece, showing the same meltpot of Prog/Punk/Wave influence, as PG II & III, get a sad
112 ratings.(Permanent waves 1980 get 1200+)
His wonderfull albums with David Sylvian, showcasing some of his best guitar work, get about 60 (studio) 50 (live).
Its just how thing are, Music that does not fit into the traditionel "prog" reference chart, most likely wont be very popular on PA, especialy if its not Hard Rock/Metal based music.
But dont forget, we are not all like that, so its still worth it to make a tread like this one

Personally I like the first 4 Gabriel albums and think they are excellent....imo the later ones did drift into a style that didn't interest me as much though there are very good tracks on all of them. But the 'cover's cd he did called Scratch My Back is simply not his forte imho. It just isn't interesting to me in any way.
As far as Fripp and Sylvian's work together it is all good and I agree that Exposure is also excellent....in a Frippian way.

It is all down to personal taste and I have to agree. The first four albums are incredible, but So, Us and Up have some epic songs yet i also find the albums not as consistent ( Ovo excluded perhaps) and Passion gets huge accolades. As far as his recent dablings go, very poor IMO.The minimalist approach does not work and the scratch renditions are for the most part...noodlings
His live DVD's are exceptional viewing thanks goodness and well new material.....doubt it, like Waters, he has nothing to prove, but hey it would be nice sometime

^Glad to see a few of us (3) with The Family and the Fishing Net not only on our list, but as number 1. It's an ignored song in discussions, but it has lots of changes in its arrangement like Old Genesis while combining with it a world music sound. I've always regarded it as Symph Prog with a different vision, fabulous track.

There are so many great PG songs, from his first 3-4 albums, but I'm going to settle on one.
It was about 1977 and I was in high school. The world was a horrible miasma of Bee gees, Sherbet, disco, Abba, Fleetwood Mac and such.
Then one night on the telly there is this guy jerking up an escalator wearing a hockey mask (which in hindsight he borrowed from John Cale), and he's screaming about passion and stuff that actually made me feel something.
So
1. Modern Love

Nailed it !!!

I think people don't respond to his solo career because it isn't the archetype prog music he was making before. Unfortunately some people can only listen to that stuff or the music that emulates it to the point it's boring.
Exactly!

Best one live had to be "Lay Your Hands On Me!"
The sight of Gabriel being passed around in the audience on fans' outstretched hands had to be seen to be believed!
I believe I saw that twice.
