Why doesn't the guy just get himself booted off the site like me. I've been booted out of so many  things that I can't even remember them all.  The most memorable has to be being booted off my university' radio show after repeated warnings not to say the "F " word on the air. I think the last straw was when I was doing a night slot and had to go live to the reporter'talking to homeless people demonstrating in some park one night. I think I said something like  the losers should get f**king jobs and stop bloodsucking off the public. Then I played Takin' Care of Business by BTO and half an hour later I was toast. I was fed up with the stupid politics anyway. So I'd rather be booted out of something than just quit. Being booted out of something makes it easier to explain. When you're booted out the only reason you have to give is : I dunno. I'd rather go out in a blaze of glory rather than saying " this sucks so I quit so there".  Make a statement man!

Basically, because it's a lousy idea that messes with the search function so we don't do it. Not many forums do allow users to delete their own accounts for that very reason.

If someone really wants to leave but is not able to delete their account here's what I suggest. Redo your password. Type your new password without looking at the numbers or letters you type in. Then you won't know your password and will be unable to log in. I have done this twice on other sites. Apparently it is pretty much impossible to leave prog sites. I guess they figure they don't want you to leave because they take all the fans they can get. Smile

Personally, I"m tempted to leave. Some people have a hard time with those who's opinions differ from theirs. Nobody's perfect but when people make things personal that's when I have a problem and that's when I'm tempted to leave. It's also why their should be an ignore feature on this site(see the thread I started on that topic).

We resist deleting accounts because all that persons posts remain but are attributed to "Guest" - we prefer to keep the user name so we know who said what and when. This is more important when the user in question has rated and reviewed albums since that is the raison d'ętre for the site existing,

Ok so then do you suspend accounts or make it so they can't log in if you feel people are just being overly abusive or trolling? We all have bad days but I'm referring to those who just have nothing better to do than just harass people for the sake of their own egos or something and never seem to contribute anything productive at all to the site.

People make replies personal as a matter of course, it is impossible not to, if you are part of a dialogue with an opposing view then an interpersonal exchange is inevitable. If someone posts a comment that I disagree with then my reply is directed at that person in particular and not at all the people in the world who share that view, in disagreeing with the argument I am naturally disagreeing with the man, yet while I'm attacking the argument I am not attacking the man, but it can be misconstrued. The problem there is a forum post lacks all the non-verbal information that a face-to-face conversation would carry - you cannot tell whether I'm typing this post in anger or while convulsed in fits of giggles or in a state of ambivalent bliss - so the subtitles and nuances of language can be misinterpreted, an attack on the argument can be misread as an attack on the man and often is. For example if you think that something someone said was an idiotic thing to say you have to be very careful in how you express that thought - smart people say stupid things, that does not make them stupid, but if you point out their comment was stupid it can make them feel stupid. Of course stupid people also say stupid things and in my experience those people are quickest to take offense.

One of the many roles I serve here is responding to reports of personal attack between forum-members: to evaluate the gravity of what at first glance seems mild or innocuous I will trawl back through the exchange of posts to see how the conversation escalated and to ascertain what prompted the alleged attack and subsequent report. More often than not is it due to some minor misunderstanding or some perceived slight made in an otherwise innocent comment.

It takes a lot for us to suspend an account. First off they have to break some rule or other, since we only have 5 rules and 2 of them are relating to personal attacks (2 & 4)  then that is not too difficult:

Quote 1. No Vulgarity profanity, or bigotry

2. No Personal attacks (flaming or trolling)

3. No Pornography or offensive images

4. No Sniping

5. No Illegal activities

Normally such an offense would result in a polite request from an Admin to refrain. So secondly they have to ignore any such warnings before we would consider a time-limited suspension. While there is not fixed rule on how many such suspensions would ultimately lead to a life-ban, rest assured if a member is suspended more than once the chances of a life-ban increase considerably.

I dislike banning people and I dislike handing out suspensions, I would much prefer the whole concept was unnecessary, I don't "get" why people behave so badly while hiding behind the anonymity of the computer keyboard, are their lives so sh*tty that the only pleasure they gain is in making others feel bad? One prick stalked me on Facebook and called me a c**t because I suspended his account for a month - as not to disappoint him or prove him wrong, I forgot to un-ban them after the month was over.

I also gain no pleasure in having to reprimand grown men for behaving like children, it is the most disagreeable Admin task I have to perform.

But you don't have to, Dean. Is it the army? Are we at war, in the middle of the battlefield? Every day I see women behaving like little girls and men like teenagers, I think that's the way most of us are, profoundly immature. What fascinated me is when I see teenagers here behaving like middle aged men, now that is disturbing.

Exactly. That's where I am now. I posted something then a moderator arbitrarily decided to delete my thread only after he got the last word in. It's almost to the point where I wouldn't mind paying someone just to delete my profile. What is the point of having a website like this where you take sides with those who are abusive to others and can't just respect the members. I am at the end of my rope here.

The problem I have with you is that you take your frustrations about another member and decide to make a thread about it. Everyone reading PA inside the last two days know perfectly well who you're talking about.
Like I said in my mail to you: you've never once approached any member of the admin team about your concerns, which is the way these things are handled. You post in the open forum. When that then is about a "bullying situation" you yourself instigated, and, perhaps far more worrying, about a respected longstanding member, I close the thread. Then again, I would've done the same had any other member been involved.

Stating the obvious but you don't have to log in. Get someone to change your password and not tell you what it is.

Why don't you just stop logging in? It's not compulsory to be here.

No, but a lot of us start twitching in violent withdrawal when the site is down for 12 hours.

Two major problems
1- the Internet is a jungle , where exotic birds and fruit survive next to scary monsters. You can get ambushed, triangulated and shot at but you must soldier on.
2- English is a terse, relatively emotionless language that can, under circumstances such as invisibility of the typer, to easily misinterpret the meaning (or density) of rebuttals, difference of opinion etc....Using emoticons can soothe the reply . Sarcasm, irony and judgment are the unfortunate tools of the word sniper.

Do like I have a few times, ignore those who pass judgement on you and forgive them, for they know not that they have sinned. Or best yet, respond with humor , as some have no sense of it at all. LOL
Which explains my post signature below.

Ok so then do you suspend accounts or make it so they can't log in if you feel people are just being overly abusive or trolling? We all have bad days but I'm referring to those who just have nothing better to do than just harass people for the sake of their own egos or something and never seem to contribute anything productive at all to the site.

Well a good tip for you would be take a rest from PA, come back in a week or so. If this cyberspace still irks you, plead the 5th and leave the site and bookmark another page. It really is that simple.
That's what i did.I took a long rest.Now i'm back-but not in black(a joke but not really funny)So far it's been good this time...Hope it stays good.....

One of the reasons I like PA that it's reasonably lively and rather opinionated at times, yet well-mannered on balance. Once in a while someone would ruffle somebody else's feathers, but nothing lethal.

This is a fun thread! I cannot understand why anyone gets bent out of shape here. This is a music site! People who get this upset over trivialities on a forum must really lead lonely lives out there
