I hope Roger will not ban this blog because of author rights.
I have some >100 renderings of Roger Dean's artwork, the original versions without band logos or album names, and although many if not most of them are already surely known by most of you I thought that I would share them. I will do it bit by bit in several posts.
Some images are actually slightly different versions of the same painting or close-up details.

The Demoms and Wizards is cool without the lettering. I had that on my wall for years when I was a kid The actual album cover that is. I've got the original book Roger Dean Views from the seventies but it's a bit hacked. i like his seventies paintings the best. Back then they were cool & innovative and it made you go out and buy albums. I bought Walking Circles by Midnight Sun just for the freakin' cover!

Love Roger's artworks. I was fortunate enough to see him give a talk many years ago at the annual San Diego Comic Con, where he showed some of these pieces on a very large screen so we could fully appreciate their splendor.

I like the smaller one simply called Cat. Where is that from? It doesn't look like it's part of the Drama artwork.

Funny, the very first piece you posted is one of my top Dean faves. Thumbs Up

'Cat is a part of Greenslade's 'Bedside Manners Are Extra' cover.  Love Roger Dean artworks.  The Dragon that graced the cover of Gravy Train's 'Staircase To the Day' album has always been a fond fave of mine - the artwork being better than the actual album itself.  Usually, RD artwork matches the quality of the music inside.

Gerinski, is there anywhere you know online that sells posters/reprints on progressive covers like these at affordable prices?

I'm currently trying to find a few poster sized works that I could display framed in a room, but don't know where to begin looking for them. Roger Dean works might be a fine start!

Thanks for any advice or suggestions!

^ You could check out Roger Dean's website, he sells prints, though could be steep compared to copyrighted posters

Thanks Chris! I will do that! Does anyone know of any notable prog cover artists that sell prints of their work in the same way?

I'm wanting to look into some Dean stuff, but generally any prog related posters....Not sure what bands/artists yet....I'm waiting for inspiration to hit!

I'm probably asking a bit too vague a question! I've seen some Ebay listed stuff, there's a ton of old A3 sized newspaper ads that might look nice in a frame on there, but I have no doubt they're mostly all printed off a computer and are not the real items at all!

Hi Michael,
Honestly I don't know but I did not search, you can probably find something. I just had a quick look at RD's own page store and the prices for the 'Fine Art Prints' are mad Ouch

http://www.rogerdean.com/store/serigraphs.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.rogerdean.com/store/serigraphs.html

However you can also order the images as desktop file downloads with a max size of 1920 x 1200 and they are cheap. With such a size the quality is enough for having a copy printed in picture-frame size at any digital printing shop, as long as you do not want them really big.
I had some pictures printed for hanging at my place and for a frame size of 50 x 40 cm a resolution of 1024 x 768 gave just decent enough quality (on good photo paper of course) but a bit too grainy. With image size 1920 x 1200 I think you can get decent prints for a size up to 70 or 75 cm of longest side. Printing itself is not expensive, I think I paid 16 euro for each print 50 x 40 cm.

Another method is of course just use google image search, select 'Large' (or 'larger than...) and you can get images of decent size, then just have them printed in photo paper at a printing shop, by the image size they can tell you up to which print size the quality will be good:

https://www.google.be/search?newwindow=1&q=sergio+garcia+pollo+frito&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47534661,d.Yms&biw=1024&bih=649&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=pry2UcObHMj4sgarr4DYBg#q=roger+dean&um=1&newwindow=1&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=lnt&tbs=isz:l&sa=X&ei=0-m2UbzpFIbDtQbI2YDoAw&ved=0CBQQpwUoAQ&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47534661,d.Yms&fp=bedd0c288c6dc5&biw=1024&bih=649" rel="nofollow - https://www.google.be/search?newwindow=1&q=sergio+garcia+pollo+frito&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47534661,d.Yms&biw=1024&bih=649&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=pry2UcObHMj4sgarr4DYBg#q=roger+dean&um=1&newwindow=1&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=lnt&tbs=isz:l&sa=X&ei=0-m2UbzpFIbDtQbI2YDoAw&ved=0CBQQpwUoAQ&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47534661,d.Yms&fp=bedd0c288c6dc5&biw=1024&bih=649

Or, if you have some professional printing shop around and what you want is really album covers reproductions, and you have the LPs in good condition, you could just take them to the shop and they can scan them in high resolution and print them out in big size.

I didn't think Olias was completely Roger Dean - the album says illustrated and design by Dave Roe.
Anyway, 'Morning Dragon' graces the cover of an (unofficial) live Yes album I have.
I recall getting a 'Paladin' album with some cool horse mounted with a knight (?) with a lance in his hand.  The music was not exciting at all, I got rid of it.  It was called 'Charge'.

That's the one !!  I was sort of right......the music didn't grab me at all - even with Pete Solley playing the keyboards.  Gosh, this would've been around the mid-90's, I kept it for a week or two, then ditched it.

^I don't think I've ever heard it actually, but I remember a friend of mine at one point claiming it one of the best prog albums he had heard. I think he'd heard one previous to it though, IQs DarkmatterLOL

I also dig Osibisa's debut, but 'Woyaya' cheezed me off so I ditched that one as well, despite the beautiful artwork.  Same goes for those RD Uriah Heep albums - nice covers, not really exciting music (for me, anyway...).

Posted By: Guldbamsen
Date Posted: June 11 2013 at 06:48
I feel you on Uriah Heep. Used to be massively into them - heck they were my first ever "prog" concert back in 1996 - had a left over telephone signal in my head for about 10 days after tooLOL But as my tastes have evolved, a lot of those dime a dozen hard rock acts from the 70s have lost their initial appeal to me. Heep, Purple, Atomic Rooster and the likes almost never get playing time anymore. I haven't parted with any albums yet though....

I had up to, at least 10 Heep albums, and all the good stuff could've fit onto a 90 minute cassette.  I haven't bothered with them for years.
Rooster on the other hand, I never get bored with them. Incidentally, RD did the cover for 'In Hearing Of...' !!  Also the artwork of the Ramases album 'Space Hymns'.
Purple, yeah, I have a heap on tape, but I only kept LP's of the first 3 and Made In Japan.
Anyway, I love that 'Lighthouse' cover - I'd like to track an LP of that some day...........

Re : Olias - Jon does thank Roger Dean for 'Planting The Seed'.  The 'Moorglade Mover' is definately a variation on Dean's fish designs.  It wouldn't have come into being without Dean's inspiration. So, credit where credit's due, I guess.

I find the use of light in 'Green Tower' (posted before) amazing.
It's common to find different colour or light versions of the same RD's paint, I don't know why that is, another example with CTTE

My guess is that he painted these things a couple of times, before deciding which to use. I'm not sure really. Seems a bit strange that all these 'differences' in nuances and colours could stem from the pressing.

I find that highly improbable, I'm more inclined to think that he painted just one version and it got manipulated in different ways by different purposes by different people.

One of the paintings in the Yessongs foldout he had to touch up because his cat ran over the canvas and left paw prints. It was almost finished and he didn't want to abandon the work so he incorporated them. have to check it in Views.

Rockpommel"s Land wasn't Dean though. I guess you're just slipping that in for comparative puposes. he certainly had a lot of influence on other artists who wanted to draw something weird and surreal Here's my Roger Dean rip-off :

Yeah he made them into clouds. I couldn't quite remember what his solution was. I actually do the same thing with my crappy artwork. If I f**k something up beyond the point of no return but the idea is working I make it into something else. Sometimes it turns out better than I expected.

You can  see the pwaw prints in fact

You can indeed. He made them into clouds, I always thought that was great.

I didn't know that, are the paws / clouds the dark band running horizontally at the bottom of the 'island' in this painting?

I was looking for those paw clouds as well, and that was the only one of the Yessongs images, that I didn't expect it to beLOL

I know they are very feint aren't they. Can you imagine that crytsal clear blue sky before his cat walked over it? he must have been a little  annoyed.

Very feint indeed. I'm telling myself that I can spot them now, but maybe I'm just seeing things...

Dean strikes me as an extremely disciplinary artist, I mean if you're going to paint with that surreal and clean feel to it, you really have to be.
I think he must've flipped out seeing his work molested by paw prints.

I am sure they are clearer in his book "Views". I suspect that they have been digitally doctored since.

You missed this one :

When I was a kid I saved the skull of a robin the cat dragged in and actually made a model like this by cutting off the nose section of a Lockheed Starfighter model and attaching the skull. It looked kind of weird because it was not to scale. I used a Starfighter because I couldn't find a model of the SR 71 .

Quote Presented by Rick Wakeman, this DVD features some of Roger's most famous work, including the paintings which defined the art of record sleeve design and inspired a generation. For this project top musicians were interviewed, including Steve Howe, Ken Hensley, Mick Box and John Wetton, along with Dean himself. Also includes performance footage by Uriah Heep, Asia and Rick Wakeman.

An absolutely great thread!  Thanks Gerard for sharing these.  The one below is used on London Symphony Orchestra does Pink Floyd: Us and Them which I really enjoy and have not heard it in a while and now am queing it up for the drive home!  Here is the link about this album if curious.

Jaz Coleman from the UK post-punk band Killing Joke did all the orchestrations on that Pink Floyd symphonic album.

Truly amazing. I've always found progressive rock album art to be very appealing. Sometimes i'll grab a record just based on the artwork, whether I know the artist or not.. thanks for these shares! so cool

It's too bad that Dean is as egotistical as he is with his artwork - art should be enjoyed by the masses, and his rampant obsession with "owning" every little thing even related to his art (e.g. suing James Cameron because Avatar had floating islands) is really detrimental to the beautiful atmospheres he creates with his art. And those print prices... $9.6k for a print of TFTO? Good god...

This lovely design adorns a dbl YES live album I own (bootleg ). Main reason I bought the bloody thing - it sounds like sh*t and doesn't deviate much from the 'Yessongs' set. Great cover though.

Hi,

I love the artist's work ... but I have to tell you that I liked the music in MANY MANY MANY of these albums that came with this art.

Both RD and ST (Hipgnosis) were very good at giving us an idea what the music was about, and Hipgnosis was a veritable "editorial" for almost ALL of their album covers. RD's was more pictorial, but in many ways, it told us about that band's work just as much!

Weird that we get stuck on the picture, and the band is nothing! Or vice versa, of course.

I have been a Hipgnosis listener, since about 1971 or so. I started on the "progressive" thing by following all the artists that had their covers, and some were weird and I didn't get it then, like the meat market cover for the Edgar Broughton Band, but it is quite valuable today, when you take a look at the meat/soldiers thrown at so many wars, something that went over my head then! Even after knowing/listening to KC's first albums!

Great cover art draws you in. It's safe to assume Dean's paintings gained Yes many fans who otherwise might have passed right over them. It's not like Yes is one of the best-named bands.

I have to admit that I don't like several albums which were presented in RD covers. Sure, visually stunning artworks like his are very attention-grabbing, but you can never judge a book by its cover.

Hipgnosis had a lot more covers that seemingly did not help explain the music, but they still had a nice touch to it. But it always had a "comment".

For me:
Quatermass -- it may look pre-historic, even now, but man, is that ever a great album! AND cover! One of the first albums I bought because of that cover. It was awesome!

Capability Brown -- Voice. Still one of my favorite albums of all time and that cover and inside opposite satire is excellent. And the album is just as good!

Edgar Broughton Band -- Meat Cover album (I think that is EBB named album). I never understood this cover until I heard their anti-VietNam song. I kept thinking this had a connection to the famous Beatles cover that was never used, and perhaps a satire on it, but it was much more serious that that.

10CC -- Sheet Music. Awesome cover pulling the sheet into the mirror.

Caravan -- Cunning Stunts. We can not state here the reverse title that is funny as heck, on this one, but that cover is nuts and a lot of fun to look at!

Flash -- First album. Guess why I got it. Still have that picture in my wall. And still think that the model was none other than Sherry that posts here. Regardless, the comparison of the two is still a valid description for that album. Her time and efforts are 2nd to none. The picture itself, might be considered a bit sexist, but in the end, I find it artistic, unless we want to call the music exploiting the whole thing, which I do not believe is the case. I find the music on par with the attraction in that album.

And then there are other covers that are ... different. Of all the YES covers, the only one that I really love and have the poster in my wall is Tales From Topographic Oceans. I liked Close to the Edge, but that art work was not as nice for me inside my head as the one from TFTO was, which was more intelligent and meaningful for me.

Of the other RD covers, the ones that never "matched" for me, were the ones for Budgie. I never made a connection to the music itself.

(Updated later)
Osibisa, believe it or not I have not heard that I am aware of.

Babe Ruth -- First Base. Still love that album and I enjoyed seeing them at the Whiskey a Go Go with Iggy and the Stooges. It was this album that got me to go get the 1st Frank Zappa album, though I had heard his stuff before. Chunga's Revenge!

Btw, when you look at Everquest, and World of Warcraft, they ripped Roger Dean left and right. I can only hope that he got a nickel out of it. And jerk Cameron ripped him off even more!

Absolutely loved his work since I saw "Demons and Wizards" on c-cassette forty-four years ago.

"Relayer" as an album cover is the worst. Dull and gray like its contents. Perfect.

"Tales from Topographic Oceans" is his finest album cover. Colourful and mysterious like its contents. Perfection.

I have always admired "Demons and Wizards" and "The Magician´s Birthday". Fantastic like their contents.

Roger Dean truly is a genius.

A bit of trivia for anybody that is still watching this thread. The Roger Dean artwork that adorns the Yessongs album was actually originally painted for Dark Side Of The Moon until Pink Floyd decided to stay with Hipgnosis. The rest they say is history.

Saw the "Demons and Wizards" painting from that Uriah Heep(?) album at an auction here in L.A. back in the '90s (along with the Relayer painting), and it was stunning. No real secret that the wizard's wings were actual butterfly wings glued to the canvas.

I love the BABE RUTH, I love OSIBISA debut album, but not W)oyaya, great cover, didn't get the music much.
Also I dig the Clear Blue Sky work.
