I thought it's about time I opened up a new thread for this year and I'll start with the first F1 launch, the new Lotus E21, which seems to look almost exactly like last years E20.

Actually, we've already had three big events this year, with Ganassi winning a 5th Daytona 24 hours at the weekend with Montoya, Memo Rojas, Charlie Kimball and Scott Pruett; Sebastian Loeb winning the first proper snowy Monte Carlo Rally in years (thank god he's not doing the full season though) and Stephan Peterhansel winning his 11th Dakar, 5th in cars. Best of all with the Dakar, Race2Recovery, a team of injured ex British and American servicmen, got one of their cars home.

Aw yeah JPM! Finally got #3! Been waiting for years, and he really could have 5 wins easily.
Let 2013 commence. Should be another epic F1 season.

I meant to start this thread yesterday with the conclusion of the 24 at Daytona but somehow forgot. What dominance by the Ganassi team. Shame that could never be transfer to NASCAR.
That car looks a little boxier than last years. Maybe it's just the angle of the photo though.

Eh...you're only trolling James, we all like/tolerate Vettel.
Which again congrats, it was a helluva fight between him and Alonso but he was truly deserving. Clutch performance again: 7 podiums in the final 10 with 4 straight wins when it really mattered most. He took control of an up/down year. With how sh*tty the Ferrari was at first, gotta give kudos to Alonso for his brilliant year, and Massa who really took off second half.
And I was wrong. Said one of the bottom feeders would manage one point, and Petrov fell short with an 11th

I dont know whether you lot have heard but Glock wont be racing for Marussia this year, they agreed to part ways last week. Given that the team still have not been offered a deal by that little toerag Bernie (I hope I'm not the only one hoping that a court, somewhere, throws him in jail for his borderline criminal way of running F1) they're seriously worried about money and cant really afford to pay Glock's £2million. Given that HRT are gone, I hope we dont lose another team. That makes three seats still unfild at Force India, Caterham and Marussia.

Poor Glock. I always like joking he was going to win the championship in his Marussia. I do someone can fill in. I'd hate to see yet another team bite it.

Well naturally Bernie is a f**ker of epic proportions but what can ya do? The NFL is run pretty horridly in my book as well.
That would be a shame. There's plenty of drivers that are deserving of shots! Cmon just give it to someone. Stirling Moss is still alive, that would be a sight and make the old time brits happy. Oh sh*t Jack Brabham is also still alive...it'd make the backmarker battle a lot more intriguing

Also I'm making a firm commitment to get back into Indy. I saw more races last year than usual but still not the full season, which I havn't in years.

Second new car to be launched, the McLaren. Considering they had the fastest car last year they've gone surprisingly aggressive with the design, switching the front suspension from he usuall push-rod to Ferrari style pull rod and raising the front of the chassis like all the other teams, though unlike Lotus they've added the vanity panle to cover the bump.

New Ferrari and Force India. So glad we have this vanity plate now, those stepped noses were ugly. Hopefully Lotus will join the others with one as well soon.

Oh! Almost forgot.... What is up with Kubica?? He was making progress I know, but clearly there is no word about an F1 return and seats are limited, though there is still an opening on Force India.
I guess it's quite unlikely to see him in 2013? And very very unlikely he'll start the season :(

Thanks for reminding me. He's actually doing 10 rounds of the European Rally Championship this year in a Ford Fiesta RRC, which with the dropped score system and if he can get up to speed on gravel he'll be a title contender in. The turn out on Rally Poland this September is going to be insane.
He actually tested a DTM Mercedes last week and was within 0.1s of Gary Paffet, Mercs top driver, it was a good way to get him used to a downforce generating car again whils the still recovers. From what I gather he's lacking in mobility in his right arm still, that could take a long time to recover, so he can't actually drive formula cars at the moment as he has to have his right arm out at an angle whilst driving.

Damn. Still good news though. Sadly, airing on the side of realistic expectations...his F1 career has a good chance of being over Though Schumacher had 3 years out and ran as well as his car allowed. If he can make a 2014 return, guess it's possible he can return to old form. He was so good too, he just had to run that rally!

If he ever comes back to F1 I reckon it will be 2015, but I'm pretty certain that whatever series he drives in he'll be very successful, he's lost none of his speed in that accident.

^Usually a bad idea, half the time the commentators get it wrong! I'm usually quite good at picking out whos helmet is which, even if I don't know all of them I know at least one driver from each team.
BTW Caterham have signed their second driver, Giedo van der Garde. He's been on the edges of F1 since 2007 and done OK without ever looking like he was worthing putting in an F1 car, but I gather he's got a bit of sponsorship.

The two cars today, Marussia's first car developed in a wind tunnel (McLarens at that) and I notice that the Caterham is more metallic green than British Racing Green now.

First day of testing. The times don't really mean much at this point, if ever, but it is worth noting that Button had a fuel pump failure this morning after only 3 laps, Rosbergs Mercedes had a wiring loom failure that needs to be modified, putting them out for the day, and Chilton had a suspension failure going into the hairpin where Schumacher and Viellneuve collided in 97.

That was the New Jersey GP (Valencia doesn't have a race this year, it and Barcelona will now start alternating to hold the Spanish GP). The extra slot was kept as TBA with all sorts of tracks mentioned over Christmas to host a race (Turkey, Paul Ricard and Magny Cours in France, Red Bull Ring in Austria (used to be called A-1 Ring) and Arigon in Portugal are the ones I can remember) but nothing came of it.

I'm surprised it's on the website still, Bernie said there will be only 19 races this year a few weeks ago, nobodies got the time or money now to sort out a GP at such short notice.
More importantly, if testing has been reliable then we could be in for a great season as Lotus, McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari are all looking very closely matched.

I never realistically expected the NJGP to happen, and every time another thumbs up for it was given I shrugged it off. Maybe maybe I started to feel slight hope and that was when it was taken away I knew the whole time! Shame, looked like a sweet track and it'd be surreal having a race 45 mins from me.
And we know how much $$ it brings in, not that it'd be a life saver (especially for how financially f**ked up NJ is) but would be something. Yeah, I liked Petrov at first but in the end...I'm not terrible impressed either. Not that he was bad but my original assumption was incorrect.
Yes, curious to see how Lotus fares! As well as Mercedes. Really faded in the second half of '12 and how can we not be intrigued at Lewis' new ride?

I heard that NASCAR is going to re-seat those that were supposed to sit in that area for tomorrow's race, and I'm guessing because that particular portion of the fence is partially weakened. Just a guess, though.

That is good news.
Daytona, and thus Talladega, are still dangerous places it seems. What's crazy is that crash is just like the one in 1988, that caused NASCAR to put the restrictor plates on to slow the cars down...though it seems not have helped greatly and leads to those constantly on edge packs that cause 20 car pile ups. Can't go unrestricted though in tests they reached like 220+ mph
I heard years ago changing to fuel injection would end the need but I read now they've done already? Maybe the only real solution, if fan safety is a primary concern, is something Dale Earnhardt said...level those banked turns. Cars have simply gotten too fast for these crazy banked turns on a big track...level the turns to 12 degrees or something like that, it will force drivers to left off the gas and would break up packs.

Well, havn't watched the 500 in a few years, might as well catch it again. Maybe it'll be a good one. LOL I was wondering when Danica walked that pathway if fans would try groping her

Well, I can honestly say that that Daytona 500 was one of the worst 500's I've seen in years. No challenge for the lead or anything. All Johnson had to do was keep it in a straight line and it was his. Greg Biffle did absolutely nothing while riding around in 2nd for the 2nd year in a row! He did nothing!

Yeah it was pretty bland. Honestly....this happens far more often than it's exciting. It's always 190 laps of riding in line, then either there's craziness or they ride it out to the end. Plate racing really does suck.
The only excitement at all was the good move Jr made to grab second.
Where's F1 when we need it!

Oh he did something alright...he fell back to 6th!
I assume the blame can be put on the new car? I haven't heard much about it (how its different/etc) but I assume it doesn't punch through the air like the old one. At least, I never recall Daytona being so much about track position in the 'recent' past.

But at least try and make a move. He literally did nothing. At least Dale Jr. tried something. Keep in mind that this is the second year in a row Biffle was in second on the last lap and made no attempt to actually win it. And I usually defend the guy.

Indeed, but it IS a pretty common for the restrictor plate races. Which is a shame since the big race of them all, Daytona, is one it ends up pretty boring often TBH. Because all the cars end up in a giant pack the race is either crazy exciting with constant lead changes, attacks, teamwork and strategy...OR what happens 80% of the time is they race in lines for most of it, and the final few laps go crazy.
When 30 cars are averaging near 200 mph for 500 miles, just a foot apart from each other it's pretty dangerous to get too dicey, so lines just form for most of the race.
Which is why I said earlier they need to flatten the turns...so drivers would have to life off the gas. May produce an actual race for once

^ Well generally they get pack racing, which is anything but a follow the leader type situation. Not really the case on Sunday. The nationwide event (accident at the end notwithstanding) was much better with a lot of overtaking and plenty of action for the lead.

No help = no move. He had no help, even if he pulled out of line he would have plummeted all the same.
Now, I still agree with you he should have tried something but I just don't see it working any differently.

Yeah, I think it was more the no help case. Last year was different, when Biffle literally made no attempt...with an actual chance to make something happen! When Dale Jr was willing to push and he just sat there like he was tethered to Kenseth's bumper. I recall him admitting to he felt bad for kinda jipping his teammate in an earlier race...awfully noble of him but it's the 500. Gotta go for it!

I can guarantee you that had Biffle pulled out, Danica would've gone with him, and with as strong as her car was, they probably would've blown by him. Usually, the second place car needs to make the move or they WILL get left out to dry. Oh well, no worries since the REAL season starts this weekend at Phoenix. Great track with great racing.

Didn't take long for my las tpost to become redundant. Turns out Luiz Razia's sponsors haven't been following through with the payments so he's already been dropped. Jules Bianchi seems set to take his seat with a bit of help from Ferrari.

^Or just get rid of the restrictor plate. It's the great equalizer that creates those huge packs. Without it, you won't have the big one and you'd have a bunch of smaller races going on all over the track. Not just one huge pack with nowhere to go.

Yeah but then won't they be going suicidally fast? I think Rusty Wallace averaged like 224 mph or around there! God forbid a car actually cleared a fence/got through. Man that's the end of nascar right there.

F1 Barcelona testing is over, what do you make of the Red Bulls being over 2 seconds off the pace of the fastest? The weather was far from ideal so it's early for rushing to conclusions but it was the same for everybody. It looks like Mercedes have done their homework.

Red Bul weren't going for times. The teams seemed to have had a lot of trouble with the tyres degrading extremely quickly, making it difficult to tell where everybody is. All I'll say is that it seems fairly close between Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus and Mercedes with Sauber, Williams, Force India and Torro Rosso equally close and not that far off the main group. Marussia have definitely made some gains over last year thouhg they'll still need some good luck to score points. Caterham seem to be the only team to have obvious problems, their car is routeenly the most evil handling thing out there.

I've just seen that Kubica has anounced his plans for the year, he'll be competing on 7 rounds of the WRC in a Citreon DS3 RRCin the WRC2 class, as well as selected outings in the European Rally Championship (almost certainly going to include his home event). First event will be the Rally Islas Canaries later this month.

No, that track shut down in 2004, although the Busch series and truck series used to race there. Unfortunate, really, because that track provided for some good racing.

Interesting rumour thats been gathering pace since late last year is that Honda are on their way back to F1, possibly next year but most likely in 2015 with McLaren. Autosport are even repoting that according to Honda sources the board signed off on the development of a V6 turbo engine months ago. I really hope this is true.

Indeed the low performance of McLaren is the biggest surprise, while Mercedes seem to have really improved, it's like Lewis Hamilton had a crystal ball (his 7th place is misleading because he went off track trying to do his fast lap). And Williams are indeed a big disappointment. It's only early days though, gonna be interesting!
