I only have a few, but my favorites are Tyranny and Mutation & Fire of Unknown Origin. The first 3 are all good to have. I used to be really into Blue Oyster Cult for reasons which confuse me now. Back in the day, I liked Tyrany and Mutation best, but these days I find myself leaning towards the debut.

Imaginos is my favorite, although I suppose in some respects it is the least BOC of the BOC albums. Following closely are Secret Treaties and Fire of Unknown Origin.

| Fire of Unknown Origin, mainly for the amazing Don't Turn Your Back. As much as I like BOC, I find only three of their songs really transport me - I Love the Night, Don't Turn Your Back and Here Comes That Feeling Again (all have wonderful Dharma solos). Fire...is more consistent than the respective albums that have the other two songs, so going with Fire. |

I listened to Secret Treaties for a few times and I think it's barely progressive and also not that good, I wouldn't rate it more than 3 stars. Maybe I should try something else before I'll give up on this band. |

If you go looking for prog rock in a BOC album, you are going to be disappointed (irrespective of that they are in the prog related section here). More like great hard rock/heavy metal music frequently tending to AOR. And also, the so called thinking man's metal kind of music rather than out and out hard rocking stuff. Try this: OR If you dislike both songs, you may not make much headway with this band. |

2. Burnin' For You (4:30) - AOR - good tho, I can handle this 3. Veteran Of The Psychic Wars (4:50) - So damn good!!!!!!!!!!!! Brilliant but love Arjen's version better 4. Sole Survivor (4:04) - Agh ASIA WAS BETTER. 5. Heavy Metal: The Black And Silver (3:19) - its metal folks lock up ya daughters! Old school metal is fun dig those cranking axes 6. Vengeance (The Pact) (4:41) - flute! okay, nice riff, cool heavier vocals, what the heck are they saying? chorus is anthemic, harmonies are quite nice, lead break is mega, the riff goes up a key, it gets locked into a faster tempo, now we are motoring! an arrow in the head to save his master, what? BOC are amazing here, it gets better, nice low vox. back to main tempo and riff - PROG FOLKS! 7. After Dark (4:25) not good sorry effort 8. Joan Crawford (4:54) hell this is weird - scary stuff - nice car crash effect and bunch of other SFX and lyrics are chilling - very cool, Crawford has risen from the graaaaaaaaaaaaaaave! BWAHHAHAHAHAHAHA 9. Don't Turn Your Back (4:02) what is that time sig - 4/2 or 6/8????????????? great bassline. Blood curdling awesome music. That is a full on prog tune. As I was saying listening for first time this week myself much more intensely to BOC to review all their material I had heard Secret Treaties last year and forgot every part of it though loved that heavy riff they get into occasionally Oyster Cultosaurus is a great little album but not consistent, loved the first 3 tracks tho they tend to open with killer tracks and fizzle out towards the end altho I am looking forward to hearing last track of Fire of Unknown Origin Is this lineup the best? - Eric Bloom / lead vocals, bass (5) - Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser / lead guitar, vocals, bass (8) - Joseph Bouchard / bass, vocals - Allen Lanier / keyboards - Albert Bouchard / drums, synthesizer, vocals I had only heard Dont Fear the Reaper before any albums that appears on far too many compilations (Romeo and Juliet were together for eternity come on baby dont fear the reaper....) I like it but its not a fair indication of their best is it?

Just ordered this! Cant resist! Okay exciting times when you discover an old band lie this for the first time. The best way to enjoy them is perhaps to create a best of BOC album
The compilations that exist have these songs on them basically ANYWAY I Looked at all of the track lists and this is precisely the songs that are on all without any double ups I hope Best of BOC

Ok listening to http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=15063" rel="nofollow">  cool little opener! and some really nice guitar at least this kicks my backside and i love the vocals the lineup is the same gem as the other classacts my first impressions - not a pretty sight but enjoy my experiencce 1. I Am The One You Warned Me Of (5:04) - 5 stars - belts my eardrums and doesnt muck around - killer riff all the way - blows my brains and then scoops them off the floor and reinserts them into my skull and then they drip over my eyeballs and into my mouth and then they fall into a pan and get eaten by dogs 2. Les Invisibles (5:33) RIFF HEAVEN - they were never this good on the early 80s albums - its nice and melodic and very cool vox. 3. In The Presence Of Another World (6:26) - acoustic gorgeousness and then blazes into a HEAVY RIIFFFFF - brilliant - unbloodybelievable structure love the way it calms into a nice section at the end before the riff blows our heads off. the extended coda is divine! 4. Del Rio's Song (5:31) - okay what ave we go ere? big drums, heavy guitar, pleasant vox, sounds bluesy, oh damn its back to AOR. Go away Journey, and Europe you are not welcome! oh it grows on you so we will let em off the hook but no more OKAY BOC! Tho stoopid lyrics boys. Lead guitar is smokin' - sounds like KISS 5. The Siege And Investiture Of Baron Von Frankenstein's Castle At Weisseria (6:43) - great title, i will let u know. ok here we go , we have a massiv edrum pounder like we will rock u, now a spacey synth and full bang ya brains riff, what a heavy vocal - Testament like, thx BOC for being old school metal. havent heard this sorta stuff in years. 1988 when Metal was KING, headbanging bliss tho i wouldnt dare, that piano is insane, ooh loving the lead break harmonics, it is faster ten and more power metal and lead killer axe, smashes ya brain with a large brick with a machete lodged between ya ears. The coda is insane, wat r they doing? piano crashes, choirs, and the kitchen sink.... 6. Astronomy (6:47) sposd to be a classic as it on all the comps, but is it? - wow pink floyd riff, hello Gilmour! the clock strikes 12, nice lyrics tho its only 6:40pm. melody is wonderrrrful, so great the way it builds, u can tell its a single, radio friendliness but cool as James Bond,.......... look out Hey hey hey! go away Gary Glitter! lad break is glorious. geez he can sing!!!!!!! That is a wall of sound - why didnt someone out there tell me they were this good? Ya selfish buggers!!!!!! 7. Magna Of Illusion (5:53) - Magna? nice use of the word... ok that little chugging riff makes me happy, the vox are very good, this is superb! check out that lead guitar - he is off the show, stop being so good ya silly cultists, so inventive yr killing me ears, i am in awe - the narration is grandiose!!!! prog off! ok shuttup we know you are legends. can it get better??, nah surely not. 8. Blue Öyster Cult (7:18) - oh, a song with the band title - better be damned good then, i thought this album was gonna be a dud, noone gives a damn about it, so wrong, its better than bad its good, nice mod tempo okay lets get serious here, this is a step down but its not a blow out either. Bloooooo Oyster Cuuuuuuuuuuuult we understand we understand we understand we understand .... I dont get it. Great lead breaaaaaakkkkkk. He is brilliant every time. but that repetitive thing is driving me nuts we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand we understand shuttup already! 9. Imaginos (5:46) oh, the album title, woohoo. Yes! driving nails into wood and making Kristen Stewart blush as she breaks her dawn, this is rock folks! oooooooohh Imaginos Oooooooooh Imaginos Oooooooooohhhhhhh - wrecking the album for me. It was perfect up to these last 2 songs. Oh well dang it its still a great album just not a masterpiece. That riff agrees wiv me. Terrible vox tho - what is this disco metal? Pain of Salvation have done that already. nah, this is awful! U can dance to this trash. get it off the album! its killing me ears , LURVE the lead break,,, lead break heaven! wah wah wah wah pedal, nutso drumming and a SAXXXXXXXXXXX!!!! so wooping it up - what are they a different band that infiltrated. and with that they are outta here first impressions - brilliant except for last 2 songs. perhaps squeeze 4 stars out of this. -------------

Hmmmmmmmmm my ears are bleeding the first song is fast loud raucous old proto metal riffing the line up Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser / lead guitar, vocals - Eric Bloom / lead vocals, stun guitars, all synthesizers - Joseph Bouchard / bass, vocals, keyboards - Albert Bouchard / drums, vocals - Allen Lanier / keyboards, rhythm guitar pretty consistent throughout! the tracks and my first impressions - brace yourselves this is gonna be insane The Black: yes its vinyl what else colour would it be???!!! 1. The Red And The Black (4:24) Eric Bloom you are a weird guy - singing blues rock at breakneck speed, mad riifs, wow bass solo is ultra cool, twin harmonised guitar leads are wonderful. I am in love 2. O.D.'d On Life Itself (4:47) what? Long Cool woman in a black dress riff - get outta here. Rocking blues rhythm Hollies did it better. So cooooooollll, unrecognisable BOC compared to more recenter stuff - what year are we in - oh, 1973! thats okay then. cant believe this is from the early 70s. proto metal feel, heavy as Kiss who were a year away with their debut. great lead break - u are a gun, Donald. this is a marvellous song, Very Hollies like though - who was first? 3. Hot Rails To Hell (5:11) Ah hello Kiss! They copied this riff. Thats pretty damn heavy for the early 70s. great riff just perfect for playing on a saterdee night, this is rocking like a storm, "burn ya right out, burn ya eyes out, blackened the eyes, speeding along like dynamite" whats he on about? the lead break is.... is.... agh! stop being so good ya mongrel, we know u can play! ok the coda is dynamic, nice Wipe Out reference! - i am still in love. 4. 7 Screamind Diz-Busters (7:01) ah this one - i finally get to hear this. its on so many compilations - whats it mean? I have got chills all over my body!!!! I heard this years ago live on a Metal show - Been after it for 28 years! I am not kidding this is killing me now. Pins and needles as I am transported back to my early 20s... you have got to be kidding! What a riff - best BOC I have heard! I am going to hunt down the live track, Actually i remember the intro when Bloom says to the crowd; "thank you for the whip, I will cherish this forever!" - put me outta my misery, WHAT LIVE ALBUM IS THAT FROM????? The lead break is blowing my mind. OH no! The Hammond organ, I am going to die...I cant take it. Nobody warned me. I had no idea they were this flaming good. Biggest secret on the planet for me. Bloom u are a genious, Whos that on organ? Allan Lanier.. I am not worthy. I remember this coda "did you burn the light??? did you burn the light??? did you burn the light???" Well I am in awe. I never knew it was BOC all these years and I had this song on cassette and the dumb DJ didnt say who it was. What? another side left.... help! The Red: Vinyl with a touch of colour - why not!!!! 5. Baby Ice Dog (3:28) - okay we settle into a straight hard rock. thats Ok I had to come down 6. Wings Wetted Down (4:12) - wow, this is very nice. the lead break is very sweet. bassline is awesome. Lyrics are sword and sorcery... jeez they can play! a lions roar and we are into: 7. Teen Archer (3:57) mod tempo, cool guitars - luv the vox, whats this about a chick with a bow and arrow. it works for me, that riff is a killer. "all of the night all of the day she got she got woooooooooahh, she will she will die!" what are they trying to suggest? time for a lead break, Bloom, is that you? sensational organ! happy little hi pitched Hammond - oh the fast arpeggios on piano, time sig change! lead break! yes! I am back in love! 8. Mistress Of The Samon Salt (Quicklime Girl) (5:08) - Mistress of the what? no breaks between songs, this better blow my backside off. hmmm, too soft so far. come on gimme something to gush over. corny lyrics. sounds like Uriah Heep in their soft days. this is not lifting my skirt gentlemen.... i wanted my skull to drip into my coffee but this is sending me to sleep. oh the gorgeous organ woke me up. my eyelids are cemented open now as it builds to that screaming lead break. Go BOC! back to the meandering verse. ho hum its okay but my backside is not in danger of being shredded by killer riffs. Whose idea was it to include this song anyway? nice lead guitar fade out, keep going this is almost passable. Maybe its a grower. OK BONUS Tracks - aint I lucky I got this one Bonus tracks on Columbia/Sony Legacy remaster (2001): 9. Cities on Flame With Rock And Roll (live - previously unreleased) (4:44) - I love this in any format. Live sound is raw and bootiful, charged up to the max. He is playing the damn roof off the stadium. Yes, its on the compilations for a reason. its frakkin amazing. the new time sig faster and dirtier and more exciting than ODB - see TNA wrestling for reference..... and the crowd go nuts! 10.Buck's Boogie (studio version - previously unreleased) (5:21) Dont like any Boogie so this better be a Pan galactic Gargleblaster... great opening. such an amazing fast guitar riff, I can never hope to play this. Listen to those string bends! the happy organ is wonderful. BOC are incredible here on this instrumental. Man thats a fast riff. Hey i am sounding like Gatot here... 11. 7 Screamind Diz-Busters (live - previously unreleased) (14:00) - Ok if this is the same live one i heard in the 80s we are going to go to die happy. It sounds similar bit no intro about the whip he is gonna cherish that someone threw at him fro the crowd. That lead break is amazing though and its the same as I remember! maybe its just the way he always does it. Love this to death! Lead guitar is as good as it gets - MASTERPIECE FOLKS!!!! ok here we go - hes dialoguing about how he met up with a sharp suited man and signed his name in blood to become a rock n roll star, and now CBS signed him up - another rocker selling his soul to the demon of rock - but one day he says i am coming to take u away after your career of evil - man, this is sinister stuff, check out that freak out ending. 12. O.D.'d On Life Itself (live - previously unreleased) (4:52) I love this song so this is gonna be heaven... there's the long cool woman riff again... i like it - who are the Hollies anyway? Bad to the bone lead break, supersonic riffing. Ok 5 stars for this album, esp with the bonus tracks - I don't care what planet you are from - that is brilliant hard in ya face rock... -------------

Had trouble finding this thread but here we are tucked in nice and tight in the Proto Prog and Prog-Related Lounge. My bad, as I remember this band are the kings of Proto Prog. Well, I have a question - Are there any good songs on "Spectres" or "Mirrors", "Club Ninja" or "Heaven Forbid"? I dont have the albums but willing to get some itunes or something.

I remember watching them perform the "Secret Treaties" album at the "Shubert theatre" , Philadelphia, 1974. What a strange concert. Kids dressed in black cloaks. Surely not the entire audience, but about 2 rows of the seating. The band was very tight and we waited for the bombs to go off in one particular song...which I can't recall it's title? Shame on me! The bomb sounds were panned from left to right channel and the mix was really impressive. Super impressive. The opening act was Golden Earring. Anyway, they say she comes on a pale horse. I like Sandy Pearlman's lyrics and I have about 7 cd's of B.O.C. They are good for a Halloween party. One particular rock cover band I played with performed at a Halloween party. We were dressed like vampires and played "After Dark" to a huge audience. That song along with "Joan Crawford" ...I can't believe the dark energy and humour within those 2 songs. B.O.C. compare to ..or are sometimes more crafty then dark European rock bands from the 70's...like Lucifer Was, Lucifer's Friend, Omega (200 Years After the Last War), and even Guru, Guru's "Dagobert's 100th Birthday. They were influenced by the MC5 and also I hear a little influence of the DOORS in there somewhere...but they certainly rate with the more interesting dark rock bands from Europe during the 70's.

I actually like Spectres. It has Godzilla, Golden Age of Leather, I Love the Night, Death Valley Nights and Nosferatu. All good songs. Mirrors does have The Vigil and In Thee and the Great Sun Jester, but that's about the extent of the good songs on that one. Club Ninja does nothing for me. The first half of Heaven Forbid is pretty good actually and has the excellent Harvest Moon, but the second half starts to get kinda bleh. ------------- I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you? |

If I can be the voice of dissent here, I'd like to stand up for Mirrors, which I think is quite good. Is it their proggiest album? Certainly not, but it is chock full of good pop songs. "In Thee" is perfect and has a wonderful guitar solo, You're Not The One I was Looking For is great, as are the title track, Moon Crazy, The Vigil and I Am The Storm. Lonely Teardrops has kind of a cool disco thing going on, but I know most people hate disco, so I am probably alone. The only really bad track on the album is Dr. Music. -------------

I like nearly everything BOC did from 76-81, especially Agents-Mirrors-Cultosaurus Erectus triple threat.
And that album they did a few years back, Curse Of The Hidden Mirror...best one since Fire Of Unknown Origin!
I wonder if they'll record new material again...

^For me, Imaginos, Fire of Unknown Origin and Secret Treaties are their top three. Agents was pretty cool, but I got real tired of (Don't Fear) The Reaper. Cultosaurus Erectus is a great album too.
