I know about a few of them, like Renaissance, Madder Mortem, Mostly Autumn, and some others, but is there a comprehensive list or a category somewhere on PA?
I did a search and one topic, about 1 band, showed up.
I listen to quite a bit of metal bands that have gals singing, like Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, Xandria, Diabulus In Musica, etc etc etc. but for all the prog albums I have, I don't think I have one with a female singer.

White Willow's new album, Terminal Twilight is quite good.
Marriages is a side project of Red Sparowes that has Emma Ruth Rundle singing.
Introitus has female vocals, not sure if she is the only lead vocalist though.

I don't know how i always forget that project. Still haven't sat through the whole thing - though what i've heard is great.

Try these for starters:Strangers On A Train: - 'The Key Part 1: The Prophecy', & 'The Key Part 2 : The Labyrinth' (Tracy Hitchings - who also sings on Landmarq's excellent 'Science Of Coincidence' and 'Entertaining Angels' studio albums, and a couple of live ones too: - 'Thunderstruck' and 'Aftershock').
Janison Edge - 'The Services of Mary Goode' (Sue Element) - excellent melodic neo prog!
Legend: - Four fine albums (Debbie Chapman (3) & Kerry Parker (1) - see http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=602" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=602 )

hmmm....I think there is much that women could bring to prog, including their innate good artistic tastes (well, often!), compositional talent and skill on many instruments.
This album is perhaps my favorite of the genre, showing how King Crimson might have sounded with women vocalists!! Highly recommended!

I tend to go for the more 'witchy' types of women in regards to prog. Annie Haslam is beautiful no doubt, but I feel like drinking straight butter listening to more than a couple of tracks at a time.
These are some of my faves:
COS
Popol Vuh(Well not strictly speaking, but this album is 'female fronted')
Catapilla(heh, I just posted this one in another thread, but hey this band need all the love they can get)
Catherine Ribeiro + Les Alpes
Koenjihyakkei
I am forgetting many here, but my brain doesn't work properly today...

Not prog in the slightest, but for anyone who simply appreciates the beauty of the female voice in music, a little-known Canadian singer, quite similar in style to Loreena Mckennitt, just has to be heard (her song actually starts at 1:26 in this tube, but it's well worth waiting for, and it's a pretty decent vid to accompany the song):
That song is from her album 'The Trial Of Lancelot, and the album closes with this little beauty:
All her albums can be bought at cdbaby.com

Comus had (has) a female vocalist but she did't necessarily "front" that band as Rodger Wooten was the lead singer. That's all I can think of.
...Besides Renaissance of course.

They are indeed rather scarce...I only found one myself...but it's an absolute beauty - this is simply gorgeous:
It's a Van Der Graaf Generator cover, but what the Hell!
Edit: She (Geraldine Le Cocq) also guested, along with Jean-Philippe Brun of Halloween (violin) on Synopsis's second album 'Gamme' (1981): http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=19955" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=19955 :

Glad to hear that. Merlin was my first album I got by them, now that I have all their albums I can say their latest Le Festin is really their best. Amazing set of songs but what strikes me the most is the incredible sound and production, everything is so clear and sounds so good! One of the best sounding albums I own.

Frumpy were mentioned in the other thread, and they deserve to be mentioned again. Heavy organ-laden prog with a vocalist who is nothing like Janis, despite willy-nilly comparisons in every review.
Also, Affinity. Lovely English band with one album and a lead vocalist who was a teacher both before and after her stint in prog.

Thinking Plague aren't strictly female fronted as they are Mike Johnson's band but they've always had excellent female vocalists.

^ The title "frontman"/"frontwoman" is pretty ambiguous; is it the lead singer, the chief songwriter, or both? I know Annie was not a chief songwriter, though she did make some behind-the-scenes contributions to the band's work besides singing (to my certain knowledge).

Guldbamsen already named my two picks - Cos and Catapila are incredible and feature some fantastic female vocals. Curved Air are very good too.
@Dayvenkirq: I'm fairly sure frontman/frontwoman is exclusively used to refer to the lead singer of bands. I think it comes from the fact that regardless of who's actually writing the songs behind the scenes, it's the lead singer who's usually up front and in the spotlight live.

One of those unusually rare bands in which the attractive female singer also looks to be the most imposing regarding photoshoots.
The nerdy male musicians stay safely behind her as she snarls, "Don't worry boys, noone's gonna mess with you 'cause they'll have to get through ME." This would be followed by the boys' grabbing their calculators to estimate and deduce their chances for survival, and the results please them.
Good band too.

In regards to the wonderful District 97 and Leslie Hunt, I hope everyone has checked out the live DVD that comes with the first run of `The Trouble With Machines' album!
Man, she is tiny! But such a powerful voice for such a small frame, a cheeky sense of humour and a VERY tough personality! Her dodgy dancing to the tricky prog time signatures is worth watching the concert for alone!

Ooh, Phideaux fan, I like Karnataka very much!
I've got the first album `The Storm' (Man, I THINK that's what it was called, I haven't listened to it in years!), and I really liked it, even though it was occasionally a little mannered and bland.
`The Gathering Light', which you've posted a sample of here, was really rather good, I couldn't believe that the new female singer they had for that album was pretty much gone just as the album was released!
Anyway, the latest female singer (forget her name) is rather wonderful, and their new live DVD looks terrific, I'll definately be snapping up a copy! Have you seen the trailer for it on another thread?

The current Karnataka singer is the lovely Hayley Griffiths, a British Classical Crossover singer from Surrey, who has performed worldwide as the lead singer in the international phenomenon ‘Riverdance’, and as Erin the Goddess in Michael Flatley’s ‘Lord of the Dance’. Hayley has toured nearly every state in the US, as well as extensive tours of Europe, China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Mexico and Chile. She has two albums out as a solo artist - 'Silver Screen' (2010) and 'Celtic Rose' (2011). Not prog in the slightest, but very pleasant listening, and they demonstrate what a wonderful voice the lass has: http://www.reverbnation.com/hayleygriffiths" rel="nofollow - http://www.reverbnation.com/hayleygriffiths or http://www.hayleygriffiths.com/" rel="nofollow - http://www.hayleygriffiths.com/ for more info. She is extensively featured in the Brian Dade Aiiradio show which I posted in the other thread you linked to (in your last-but-one post). This show has a few technical gremlins with the chatroom, but the music played on it from the 'New Light' live album is superb, and Hayley comes across as someone having a personality to match her good looks. The show will be taken down early next week, so if you've got about three hours to spare: http://www.livestream.com/aiiradionet/video?clipId=pla_05805399-a594-43f7-8325-19c61eac9f87" rel="nofollow - http://www.livestream.com/aiiradionet/video?clipId=pla_05805399-a594-43f7-8325-19c61eac9f87

I like Karnataka. I've got The Gathering Light and I also had another CD and DVD with Rachel Jones. But you know, I think that in 2013 the only album of celtic progressive rock I will buy is the third one of Seven Reizh.
A good and old band: Carol Of Harvest.

I always felt that Christina Scabbia of LACUNA COIL is a great female vocalist, but Lacuna Coil is not a prog band by any means, except for one song they did on their first orginal demo ep.
UN FANTASIMMA TRE MOI. brilliant.

^ It's certainly a good 'un...but Cristina doesn't sing on it - it's just an instrumental.

I saw that some polish female vocalists were mentioned, three others that I like :
Marta Głowacka from ANAMOR
Agnieszka Dudek from ANKH and TURQUOISE
Katarzyna Jajko from TURQUOISE
Maja Konarska from MOONLIGHT
Anja Orthodox from CLOSTERKELLER and SVANN
And also women from other countries :
Loreto Chaparro from MATRAZ
Monika Edvardsen from ATROX

Right you are. I'm kinda glad she doesn't though. It's a piece best as an instrumental. The only prog song they ever did. I guess I should have mentioned she doesn't sing seeing how the point of this tread is female vocalist of prog. Lol. I'm a real winner sometimes I know

Surprised that there has been no mention of the great Australian Heavy Prog band A Lonely Crowd. Originally fronted by Leah Ceff, who just past halfway through the recording of their album User Hostile was replaced by Xen Pow. They kept all of the original recordings with Leah so Xen just recorded what was left. They're both great vocalists and the album is fantastic.

Lana Lane (USA).

Lana Lane is a superb singer, and her other half (Erik Norlander) is a superb keyboard player, who both plays on and produces her solo albums. She sings lead in her eponymous band, has sung backing vocals for Erik's band 'Rocket Scientists', and also guest sung on Ayreon and Erik Norlander solo albums.Sadly though, she is not in the archives...despite having been suggested three times, with opinion pretty well split down the middle on each occasion.
She was actually evaluated for Prog Metal about two years ago: http://progfreak.com/Lana-Lane-104960.html?path=pa/recent" rel="nofollow - http://progfreak.com/Lana-Lane-104960.html?path=pa/recent , and Karl (bonnek) seemed in favour of adding her, but unfortunately none of the rest of the team at that time shared his view.
Her music spans several musical styles from jazz-related pieces (eg. on Ballad Collections, Winter Sessions) to power ballads (Love is an Illusion, Queen of the Ocean) and progressive metal anthems (Secrets of Astrology, Lady Macbeth, etc.). Her influences are stated to include Ann Wilson of Heart, Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, Glenn Hughes, Joe Lynn Turner, Tony Bennett, and Chris Cornell...so I guess that's six times not prog...but I would pesonally love to see her added on here.
It ain't gonna happen, I know...but she is pure class - period!!

I've tried to get into Lana Lane, she should be right up my alley, since I love bands like Nightwish, Within Temptation, etc........but I just don't care for the music. Just one of those things I guess.

I see no mention of Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can Dance, or Michelle Young from early Glass Hammer.

Omg what a sin!!! LISA GERRARD is brilliant. DEAD CAN DANCE are one of my favourite prog art rock bands right now. ANASTASIS simply blew me away! GERRARD is amazing on the track KIKO.

If not, they are from Italy too, and their female singer has a pretty cool voice. She also plays the flute. I've heard them labeled "gothic folk metal", but they have quite a progressive edge in their stuff as well with some offbeat time signatures and room for good instrumentation. They're pretty new, and I dig them alot, more than most of the gothic metal scene these days. "Misleading Paradise" and "Minstrel Of Dolomites" are especially good, but their whole Vitriol album is essential if you want some fresh Italian accented goth metal in your collection.

Well aren't you kind. Thanks so much for this recommendation. From the 2 tracks you sent me I can already tell that they are more musically diverse than LACUNA COIL. I've really been into the Dark Gothic Progressive metal scene lately because of my long time favourites SAVIOUR MACHINE, KAMELOT, NIN and THE CURE. anyway, thank you and I will explore this band, EVENOIRE further

Their previous (1998) studio album 'Science of Coincidence' is good too - also featuring Tracy Hitchings on vocals. Before that they had male vocalists (notably the excellent Damian Wilson).
If you want a real treat, get the 2006 DVD 'Turbulence - Live in Poland' with Tracy at the helm:
The version of their epic song 'Lighthouse' on there is brilliant.

Touchstone were mentioned in the list of female-fronted prog bands posted quite early in this thread, but no mention since. They played at the Robin 2 in Bilston UK - just up the road from me - about a month or so ago, and someone has posted a couple of vids from the gig on YouTube. Here's one of them:
Kim Seviour is the vocalist.

Man, she is tiny! But such a powerful voice for such a small frame, a cheeky sense of humour and a VERY tough personality! Her dodgy dancing to the tricky prog time signatures is worth watching the concert for alone!
I know what you mean - her dancing is captivating....
