my personell favourite would have to be Brothers in arms followed by one world, and my third...probbebly Telagragh road.
and by the way. don't keep saying its not prog why are you talking about it. its a music lounge you should be able to talk about any music. so if its not about dire straits and you're trying to tell me off (na na na i can't hear you)

Lady Writer, Dire's Strait sound was original in 1979, sadly became too predictable with the years.

I like _Telegraph Road_, _Private Investigations_ and _On Every Street_.
I've heard a live version of _Romeo and Juliet_ though that is great.
But _Walk of Life_ and _Industrial Disease_ aren't too good.
James.

Mine is 'Telegraph road', the first epic song I ever listened to. Runner up: 'Going Home' (although it's credited to Mark Knopfler, the best version in on the Alchemy live album.

1. Private investigations (#7 in my all-time favourites list) 2. Brothers in arms (#27) 3. Telegraph road (#40) 4. Tunnel of love (#110)
Honourable mention (scoring 9/10 on my scale):
Sultans of swing Down to the water line
A great band, who should have stopped after Brothers in arms. Love over gold is one of the best albums ever made.

Wow, plenty of Private Investigations fans. I'm one of them along with Telegraph Road.
Also like Wild Theme from the Local Hero soundtrack by Mark Knopfler as well.

no particular order
- Lady Writer - cool song, and best guitar lead I've ever heard from Knopfler
- Southbound Again - outstanding boogie-shuffle in the style of Little Feat, maybe better than any Litte Feat?
- Sultans of Swing - A classic. I think there is a long version out there somewhere as well. Some very tasty drum-work from Pick Withers!
- In The Gallery - another great groove
- Heavy Fuel - "it took six hamburgers..." what a great song!
Curious...has anyone heard Live at the BBC? I'm wondering if this is worth a purchase...

Wow ! How many songs rated are in your list ? I never thought of doing that.
To the question : I hesitate between 3 totally different ones
Telegraph road - for it's complexity and being the only DS epic.
News - for it's beautiful melody.
Hand in hand - for it's great lyrics.
none of them will make the top 10 in my list I guess but nice music until brothers in arms that was half rabish (so far away for example).

It's got to be Sultans of Swing, Brothers in Arms, though a good song, sounds like a fifth rate Floyd.

At the moment, 179. I have a website ( http://www.lu-art.com/Music - www.lu-art.com/Music ) dedicated to this, it lists all songs that I consider to my own taste the best of the best - out of the thousands of songs that I like, these are the ones that stand out. I have recently gone back to a full ranking rather than a top50, current ranking can be found here: http://www.lu-art.com/Music/Top50songs.html - http://www.lu-art.com/Music/Top50songs.html
You will find a - some might say weird - mixture of prog rock, classic rock, pop, and ballads in my list....

Actually a group I grew up with so I heard Brothers In Arms album first and worked my way backwards ... Top 10 are:
1) Brothers In Arms
2) Sultans Of Swing
3) Tunnel Of Love
4) Your Latest Trick
5) Ride Across The River
6) Why Worry
7) Romeo And Juliet
8) Hand In Hand
9) Money For Nothing
10) Expresso Love
Hmm, I must have been done and dusted with this group by the time I got
into prog cos I always found Telegraph Road and Private Investigations
boring ...

I think all of Love Over Gold is in my top 10 DS songs, than all of side 2 of Brothers In Arms as well as Sultan , Gallery and Six Blade Knife from their debut.
That probably makes for more than 10, but who cares.......

Dire Straits was my first favourite band (just before Marillion) when I was 14-16. Best songs: each one except Industrial Disease on LOVE OVER GOLD, News, Where You Think You're Going, Lady Writer, Single Handed Sailor, Brothers in Arms, Once Upon a Time in the West and Tunnel of Love in ALCHEMY LIVE, .... Christ, I get sentimental and nostalgic now...
