I couldn't find a thread about some of the great Swedish Prog out there so I decided to make one. Some of my favorites are Beardfish (and Gungfly as well), Trettioariga Kriget, Anglagard, Moon Safari, and Ritual. What are some of your favorite Swedish Prog acts or what do you like about it in general?

+ ACT, Agent of Mercy, Anekdoten, Brighteye Brison, Carptree, FK, Galleon, Gosta BS, Isildurs Bane, Sinkadus. I like the Retro sound, dark atmosphere, complex compositions etc.
I am sure there's been a thread of this sort in the archives.

I should have said recent, any that I did find at all related to this topic were too old, and they weren't quite like this.

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=451" rel="nofollow - In the Labyrinth has a handful of albums that blend Nordic and Eastern instruments and song arrangements for a sound that is pretty unique - sometimes folksy, sometimes a little psych, and plenty of interesting scales and tones you wouldn't normally associate with Swedish music.
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=3500" rel="nofollow - Nya Ljudbolaget is sort of a Swedish supergroup with members of Samla Mammas Manna, Flower Kings and Ramlosa Kvallar. Folksy jazz with a smattering of modern chamber and you'll swear you hear a touch of Zappa influence at times.
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=169" rel="nofollow - Isildur's Bane made some gorgeous symphonic prog that's a little different because it features a fair amount of brass.
Personally I think Psych when I think of Swedish music, but I don't know of any psych prog bands from Sweden that stand out...

I finally picked up Hybris by Anglagard yesterday. Amazing, amazing album - now I know what all the fuss is about!
Galleon's got some pretty nice music. I've only got one of their albums (From Land to Ocean), but I enjoy it very much.

Anekdoten is my favourite but i'd also mention Anglagard, Landberk and Sinkadus. Certainly with Anekdoten, Anglagard and Sinkadus it's the mellotron and melancholic sound that appeals to me. Landberk are different but still melancholic.

Sweden have produced a lot of great bands, the ones I like best are Pan.Thy.Monium, Trettioariga Kriget, TFK, A.C.T, Karmakanic, Beardfish, Isildurs Bane. I'm sure there are more I can't recall right now.

Kapia comes to mind as a predecessor to Anglagard, I believe they were on the tail end of the 70's symphonic movement.

Nothing sounds better than Swedish prog in good ol' Sweden. My current favourite Swedish band is Diablo Swing Orchestra. Unfortunately the lads are not very popular around these parts for some reason. Luckily South America will always be there for you to appreciate your hard work.
Other acts I love: Grovjobb (psych at its finest); the avant-folk bands like Arbete och Fritid, Nya Ljudbolaget, Ramlosa Kvallar; I have recently discovered Anglagard, and is it just me or these guys sound better than Genesis?; then the very cheerful short lived electronic prog band Detektivbyran; I will also second Bob's mention of In the Labyrinth; and of course the psych scene which one should not miss: Algarnas Tradgard, The Spacious Mind or Malmo's Blandbladen, to name a few. All in all, beautiful prog scene this country has.

Two of my all time favorite bands are Swedish, The Flower Kings and Pain of Salvation. For me, their music is so wonderfully creative and expressive. Moon Safari are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands too. I have heard A Kid Called at least 7 times within the past two days.

Kaipa and Trettioariga Kriget as well, they started around the same time. From what I've read it seems that Trettioariga Kriget was a big influence for Anglagard.

Big fan of the psychedelic Swedish Krautrock bands from the 70s - such as Kebnekaise, Älgarnas Trädgaard, International Harvester, Fläsket Brinner and Archimedes Badkar.
All of these bands display some of the same charismatic trades, that although sounding completely insane, do put them in the same sonic landscapes as Amon Düül, Xhol Caravan and other early sound explorers coming out of Germany - except for the fact that they incorporated this weird and highly gelatinous endemic folk vibe into the proceedings - making them sound completely original and Swedish.
I like everything else Logan just posted as well - including that Bjørn J;son Lindth record. Yummy!

I can never understand why Par Lindh Project is off so many people's radar when talking about Swedish Prog.
Albumwise Veni Vidi Vici is probably my favourite closely followed by Mundus Incompertus. Both are excellent modern symph prog albums. Par's biggest influences are Keith Emerson/ELP and Rick Wakeman .
Of some interest perhaps is that he founded the Swedish Art Rock society back in the nineties.

Both bands have been to the US afaik. The Flower Kings have done at least two North American tours playing both US and Canadian cities. Unfortunately PoS I a loved them is no more. The only reminding member now is Daniel Gildenlöv and they sound nothing like the band I learned to love any more. I was fortunate to see them live a couple of times during Remedy Lane and Be and I will ave fond memories of those concerts a long time.
I agree with a prior poster that clumping together all bands from Sweden under one flag is a tad useless. Let's start a UK Prog bands topic.....
To stay on topic Black Bonzo and Ritual are two really good often forgotten Swedish bands that never seem to get the credit they deserve.

A really musical culture existing on the country of Sweden, and the gusts of new sounds blew quick to their side of Scandinavia from England and continental Europe. You can browse the ProgArchives entries from this country here: http://www.progarchives.com/Bands-country.asp?country=178" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/Bands-country.asp?country=178
I have managed yet only to scratch the surface, but from early psych moments Pärson Sound is very recommendable group, focusing to minimalist sound textures and aural soundscapes. Their later incarnations International Harvester and Träd, Gräs och Stenar have also some really fine hypnotic moments, sadly coupled with quite poor letdowns. I have spinned some Mecki Mark Men albums, and they sound interesting early experimental rock disks, my own focus has though been immersed to the Baby Grandmothers album which emerged from this group.
My awareness of the Swedish prog was introuced by Anekdoten's "From Within", and I really adore the two dark monolithic album artifacts. Through moody Morte Macabre I found the melancholic realms of Landberk, and more sensual continuum from that band from the albums of lovely Paatos. From psyhcedelic perspective I have enjoyed The Spacious Mind (and their Råd Kjetil etc. projects), spontaneous innovations of My Brother The Wind and grandiose tonal constructions of Gösta Berlings Saga.
As some other encouters, have seen Dungen on stage and liked them very much, but the studio albums I listened didn't sound so fine as their live concert with more open and impressionistic playing. As random nuggets I might mention Anna Själv Tredje's "Tussilago Fanfara" for fans of vintage electronics, Garmarna's first recording for those enjoying raw polska ragas, Trettioåriga Griget's first for anybody interested on fusion of 1973 King Crimson and Deep Purple (or sumthin) and ST Mikael's "In Harmony" for psych rock hallunogenic sequences. Currently on my listenings from the neighbors are the discography of The Amazing (coming soon to the archives) and the solitary album of Life.
Looking forward to find new groups and albums from this adorable country certainly. Wouldn't Mellotron Storm and Guldbamsen (and others enlightened) have time for a comprehensive list?
Posted By: Guldbamsen
Date Posted: September 24 2012 at 13:37
Heheh.... Mine would indeed include a lot of the same stuff that you've already mentioned
As for the early psychedelic sound. There was actually a couple of different takes on it, where one of them continued the late 60s in both sound and melody, whereas the other that started with International Harvester in 1968 relied much more on a looser expression. I've called it Scandinavian Krautrock, and as bunkers as that may sound to folks around here, it still is very befitting. The first couple of Kebnekaise albums, particularly ll and lll sound like a wobbly and folky Amon Düül. Then there's Archimedes Badkar, Trad gras och Stenar, Algarnas Tradgard, Fläsket Brinner, Handgjort and a couple of others that I forget right now, but all of these bands utilised a somewhat deranged approach to making music leaning on atmospheres, micro-tonal effects, experimental electronics, psychedelia, free form composition, improv, jazz, Nordic folk and Indian colours. Right up my tree!
Björn J:son Lindh also made some pretty amazing albums in his day - emanating something of the same fragrance as the aforementioned Swedes.
Alright I will have to come back with a "list", but for now this will have to do.
I don't actually make lists anymore for fear of forgetting stuff that I love. There's just so much out there, that I have a hard time remembering all of it.
