Roxy were much better musicians in their 1975 incarnation (Jobson and Wetton were in the band then). In the early days they even had Davy O'List (ex Nice) involved. A very interesting band and some classic songs.
Beatles were obviously iconic and changed the face of music so its impossible to put anyone up against them although I would have selected Queen as more likely to last at least 5 rounds rather than getting put down in the 1st round

Have to disagree with you there. I think Roxy Music were a better band when Eno was in the band. They drifted more towards pop music after Eno left and were more of an art band when Eno was there. Have to admit though that Stranded is a top album without Eno being there. Since The Beatles are going to win this hands down how about a poll between Roxy Music, Queen and Split Enz, three great 70's rock art bands? |

I listen to Roxy Music more, but I would dispute they were as influential or 'important' as The Beatles.

I don't know enough about Roxy to judge their best work just making the observation they had some serious 'muscle' in their line up around 1975 ,in fact the embryo of a future prog supergroup.

This is totally unfair and in essence, complete lunacy to compare the 2. Firstly the Beatles were a massive worldwide phenomenon as well as creative giants who forged a path for a new illuminated youth . Certainly Roxy did grand things in the long-hair, bell-bottom hippie days (early 70s) and their legacy is fantastic but the Beatles can only be rated against the Who , maybe the Kinks or the awful Rolling Bones.
Now Roxy vs Bowie, that's a better clash, with RM winning easily ! ------------- I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth. |

Don't want to be offensive with the fans but, IMO Roxy Music is a non-transcendental t hybrid between Rock, Prog and Pop, which influenced very few and lost most of their creativity when Brian Eno left. On the other hand, The Beatles are an icon for everybody and the most influential Rock & Pop band of history. Iván -------------

I rarely listen to them although I obviously greatly respect their achievments and they have of course many great songs. Fine but you can still state a preference without being so snotty about it. |

That's me When I joined PA and still used the word overrated (Now I despise that expression), I started a thread about how overrated The Beatles were, so as you can imagine, they are not in my top 100, except maybe for "Abbey Road". But this guys made a revolution. They are essential influence for Rock, Pop, Psych and Prog, so even when they are not my cup of tea (Specially until Sgt Peppers) denying their transcendence would be a madness. And IMO Roxy Music was a good band but nothing more. Iván -------------

I think it depends on what you're looking for in your taste in music. Honestly, this poll might as well be something like, say, King Crimson vs. Creedence Clearwater Revival. Granted Crimson has a larger, more varied output, but someone might prefer CCR because they like that style of music better.

I will not say that is silly etc... Nothing is silly. You put two bands for voting. No harm at all! But it is kind of unfair for Roxy IMHO. Is a band I really like, (especially the first 4-5 albums), but against the Beatles? Impossible! I will vote for the Beatles of course, but I'm saying again it's a bit unffair... Im not saying that All Music guide is a bible or anything but their list of bands influenced by is quite good and very accurate and also the list of bands who is supposedly influenced by Roxy Music is this long
the list of bands who have influenced Roxy includes the Beatles which i have never stated differently, the Beatles is humongesly infuentual also, but never doubt the power Roxys music have been to other rock music groopes, the hoe New Wave scene is in some way or another, influenced by Roxy, and New Romanitcs music

Much as I love Roxy Music, they don't belong in the same poll as the Beatles. I suspect that there is hardly a musician alive today who hasn't been influenced in some way by the Beatles. I share Your sentiments that any band can be put against each other ..but Beatles against Roxy Music  But i still wouldnt put against Beethovens 5th with full symphony orchestra against version made with harmonica.. same song but somehow the harmonica version is going to lose

IMO it's very hard to compare bands from different time periods the only thing I could say is Brian Eno will tell you the Beatles influenced him the disorienting blur of tape loops, backward tapes, ambient passages and bizarre vocal effects that the Beatles did was a major source of influence on him.
The Beatles experimented in just about every way possible — phased vocals ("And Your Bird Can Sing"), dreamlike guitars running in reverse ("I'm Only Sleeping"), the wild abuse of tape loops ("Tomorrow Never Knows") the songwriting was as strong as it had ever been. Its dissonance was modern, and the wake it's left is audible in everything Animal Collective has achieved.
The Beatles were not a mere "pop" band. Only a real simpleton
would make THAT charge. Nor did they compose a lot love songs (some of the not
as a group ). Some of their songs, in fact, were actually quite radical,
sophisticated and even weird (for their time period) both musically and
thematically,.. namely songs like "Tomorrow Never Knows", 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds ( L.S.D. ),
Strawberry Fields, and I Am the Walrus ( as a few examples ).
