I’m translating a children’s book from Danish to Norwegian. It’s about a car-crazed duck called Axel, The author rhymes Skoda with Toyota, which I believe is perfect in Danish but unfortunately less good in Norwegian, where the distiction between d and t is much more audible. Do you know any car brand or model that rhymes with either Skoda or Toyota?

If you're changing a car brand - you might as well change both rhymes. I'm not sure how many children are familiar with Coda. How bout Peugeot and Renault? ------------- |

The author has already used: Alfa Romeo/Ford Mondeo Bugatti/Maserati (not a perfect rhyme, but I kept it) Lamborghini/Morris Mini and Peugeot/Renault She has also used more uncommon names like Callaway Coupé (I googled it and found that Callaway is an engine design company who is notable for their modification of Chevrolet cars, especially Corvette), so I don’t think Coda is too odd in the setting. But thanks!

What if I used Opel Kadett/Chevrolet Corvette? Maybe that’s better than the obscure Coda …

Very good suggestion! I have to think about it – if I choose it, I would have to do another replacement, becase the cars mentioned in this passage are: Chrysler, Ferrari, Callaway Coupé, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Ford Mondeo, Bentley, Bugatti, Jeep, Maserati, Passat, Lamborghini, Jaguar, Morris Mini, Porsche, Peugeot, Rolls Royce and Renault. Then comes this troublesome line which includes: Aston Martin, Skoda, Seat and Toyota. After that it’s Saab, Suzuki, Chevrolet and Mazda. So If I choose the Mercedes, I’ll have to replace the first one with another brand/model, and if I choose the Corvette, I have to find another car to replace the second Chevrolet. ------------- He say nothing is quite what it seems; I say nothing is nothing (Peter Hammill) |

I’ve made up my mind. It’s Mercedes Benz/Kia Carens. I replaced the first Mercedes with Aston Martin (it was easy to make it fit with the rythm, and I couldn’t use it later anyway). So thanks a lot to all of you, and special thanks to Moris (clarke2001) for making me think "outside the box" and someone_else for finding the solution!

The Pagani Zonda would rhyme better with Honda.

Zonda and Honda is indeed a perfect rhyme, and it would have worked well. But now I’ve sent my translation to the editor, and I’m happy with the Benz/Carens rhyme. Btw, I did this translation for the Swedish Läsrörelsen whose goal is to make children read more and develop a good language. The book will be printed in several hundred thousand copies and given to all the children who choose a Bok Happy Meal menue at a McDonalds’s restaurant in Norway. So it’s one half idealism, one half big business.
