In too few elements of our lives is sheer nastiness a selling point; fortunately, this is not the case when it comes to bass tone.  In this (hopefully) weekly blog, I will be giving you the lowdown on some progressive albums that feature dirty, ugly, bass sounds that are frankly just revolting.  I hope you can appreciate them on the same level as I do.

If you are familiar with an album fitting the above criteria - preferably relatively obscure - and you'd like to bring it to my attention, send me a PM and it might end up here in a couple weeks (especially if you play on it).

EPISODE 1: Led Bib's Sensible Shoes
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=25424" rel="nofollow">

A particularly wild brand of noisy avant-jazz, Led Bib's album Sensible Shoes features wailing saxophone, noodly electric piano, and pounding drums punctuated by upright bass that is at times so gain-laden that it is indistinguishable from flatulence.  Truly a thing of beauty.

It's nice to see the development of bass sounds in the prog rock genre. Bands who took a step forward and were looking for harder edged sound like Yes, King crimson and rush just to name a few to Primus and now Led Bib is a fine example.

Hi,

This is going to be a fun blog ... and yeah ... I'm gonna listen to that ... but honestly ... I really think that most metal bass stuff is so boring, ugly and so childish as to be as bad as those diapers we remember so well at times! But we always had a good laugh learning to play the ABC's didn't we?

Now let me get Robin Williams to do some screaming and swearing for us!

Hi,

Led Bib has nothing to do with metal, and as that's the only band I've mentioned so far I'm not sure what you're talking about.  Also, some of the most impressive music (on many levels) I've heard could be described as metal, so you're either listening to the wrong things, or just need to open your mind more.

Who's the greater fool? ... the one that supposes or assumes, or the one that did not ask?

It wasn't meant to be imcomprehensible. I just did not want to say something about any specific band ... I can not honestly say that there are no disgusting bass players out there any more than excellent bass players, although I do have a preference for the bass in some musics as opposed to most rock'n'roll idioms, where, it is generally boring!

Someday we might have someone listen to David Darling and Terje Rypdal in Eos ... very simple bass, with some effects and too pretty to be enjoyed here. I like the bass in Carmen, which was John Glascock, just before he was stolen by Jethro Tull, which brought Carmen to an end. I think the bass in AD2 is the most unusual of all music's out there. Holger Czukay's first 2 solo albums are phenomenal with bass on bass on bass on bass with sound effects weirdness and basses soloing on top of basses soloing and then more basses ... and on one of the next albums he has a fun time with Jah Wabble doing some bass crazy stuff.

But then, if you like trully disgusting but great fun bass sounds, you have not heard Bootsie! ... or you are in dire need of a serious dose of Maggot Brains!

But none of you are ever going to listen to any of those suggestions ... otherwise you would have something else to say other than boring and useless posting!

Hi,

Wow ... I, at least, had the consideration to read each paragraph in detail ... and make an effort to add to it ...

Sorry to hear, that even what someone from the very area, site, and work, was quoted, and you specified that he is invalid to the discussion when it was brought up on the same paragraph, and I merely tried to clear it up because what it said was nebulous and unclear, and not meaningful whatsoever.

AND it was no less than an idea, than what I wrote ... !!!

I'm just sad that you have to turn this into personal stuff, and never read what is being stated ... and see if there is any merit to it ... but that's ok ... I know when I'm not wanted and people like you don't give a sh*t anyway!

Thanks ... and you are welcome to remove this thread ... since there is not enough intelligence to read it and discuss it and a quotidian study of the genre and ideas is nto something that you accept as valuable and important!!

Don't bother replying Dean ... I'm not logging in again to this site ... it's a waste of time amidst people that don't believe a world exists, and that anyone else could possibly have a different opinion!

Good night!

I like the brown album, and like you said has the nastiest production, BUT in a negative way. The drums are recorded in distortion, and i'm sad to say it ruins the album. I have always wondered if that was on purpose or just a big f**k up?!

EPISODE 2: Russian Circles' Geneva
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=25272" rel="nofollow">

Today's episode is brought to you by Moshkito, who loves metal.

With each release, Russian Circles has gotten dirtier, denser, and waller of sound.  Geneva is a sadly underlooked album of theirs, featuring a striking blend of crushingly heavy distorted guitar, bass and drums, and smooth posty ambiance.  The ridiculously low and loud bass absolutely grinds.  At times it sounds slick, like a string section, and at other times it's closer to a low-flying Boeing.
I could have just as easily gone with their most recent effort, Empros (which by the way is magnificent), but figured Geneva was a better culmination of the ugliness they had been starting to hint at with Station.  Enjoy.

Sorry Youtube's quality blows, I didn't feel like uploading a better copy than this guy's video.

Is SZEWP some kind of onomatopoeia?

Anyway, Empros is awesome and I listen to it frequently, and Russian Circles is becoming one of the 2-3 post-metal bands I ever want to listen to. After hearing your posted track, I now know I should check out Geneva. I love that rattling bass in the repetitive middle section of the song, and the ending actually does sound like a Boeing.

EPISODE 3: Guapo's Towers Open Fire

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=6119" rel="nofollow">
Before Guapo was what we might describe as a Zeuhl band, they were, well, something else.  It's hard to say for sure.  Their first three or 4 albums are wild, noisy metallic rock that probably has no grounding whatsoever in music theory.  The bass is slightly nasal, with scooped out mids and a healthy (or unhealthy, depending on the food group) crusty coating.  There are even vocals (Shocked), although what the lyrics are or if they are even in a real language is beyond me.  This is the kind of music that will make your mother/roommate/neighbour/significant other ask "What the hell are you listening to?"

By the way, (I think at least) this album is WAY better than the rating on this site would suggest... but if you look at who reviewed it, maybe it's rating isn't very surprising.

Until next week, always and forever CLOMP CLOMP CLOMP.

Interesting, this track is almost re-done in Empros (let me look out the title). It's interesting coz at the time I didn't like Geneva and at the time Empros came out I heard no connection to Geneva because I had completely forgotten how it sounds.

Actually this was very nice and enjoyable. I'll be checking out some more.

Kinda nice to get the ears' wax cleaned off once in a while, and that was worth it!

The Guapo stuff is interesting. Kinda reminds me of the early days Neu and Kraftwerk (before their hits) when it seemed like they were just experimenting with the effects and its sounds. Very different.

Primus is an interesting band, that I have to give a better listen to. I have not enjoyed their work much, but I will admit I have not listened to it in detail. Most of it has been a snipet here or there and it's difficult to get a good listen about the band on that, for me.

I'm seeing if I can add to this from my collection ... but it might just be a few pieces here and there. I keep thinking that if I look up Michael Rother, or Roedelius, and some of those folks, that more will show up as well, though not as recent as the examples you have demonstrated so far.

EPISODE 4: Jean Louis' Morse

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=31514" rel="nofollow">

It's jazz, but not as we know it.

Long a Shred Room favourite, Jean Louis is a 3-piece band consisting of trumpet, bass and drums.  The instruments are so swaddled in effects that it's often difficult to identify which is which.  Bassist Joachim Florent gets down and dirty, and grooves out more than I would ever think a white man can.  Where their debut is smoother and more hypnotizing, their sophomore effort Morse is grungy, ugly and pretty much all over the map.

I was about to say instrumental, but a dog sings some on this album.

Enjoy.

p.s. somebody tell Rob that it's inappropriate for a prog reviewer with 20x weighting to give out 1 stars willy-nilly to things he has only heard once

Special thanks to Alex (Sheavy) for this find.

Italian band Black Engine is a side-project of Zu - whom I will certainly be featuring here at some point soon.  They basically (for anyone familiar with the latter) just sound like a noisier, dirtier, wilder version of Zu's latest album Carboniferous.  The bass is ridiculously low and distorted, almost closer to a feeling than a sound.  It's fairly prominently electronically manipulated, and I must say it is completely awesome.  Full of energy, with a strong jamming feel to it.  I hope you like; I was certainly impressed.

Definitely not disgusting enough for you, but this one has your name written on it.  I picked it up for $5 from CD Baby.  The artist is Ed Haponik and the album is titled Triceratops.  No guitars were allowed in the studio for the recording, because "his is a bass player and he plays bass".  Or something like that.  I suspect that your favorite part about this album would be the title but if you can find it somewhere you might want to check it out.

Isn't he that guy that is completely awesome with yoyos? There are some basses standing in the background in some of his vids.

As I said I really don't think that it fits this thread too much, I really just associated the title and the fact that he only plays bass (also keyboards and ukelele) on the album.  If you check out the samples the best track is probably the last one, which is an instrumental.  He also does a cover of a Leonard Cohen song "Famous Blue Raincoat".  I'm not familiar with Leonard Cohen, but I know that there are some fans of him on the site.

On the Music Page, check out the song "Fecal Odyssey", the bass in that track is pure nasty.

Yeah. I saw him live with Daevid Allen just a few month before he died. What a performance!
He played with his bass before everyone got on stage, just messin' around, it was awesome to see that.

Oh by the way if anybody wants me to resurrect this thing, send me PMs with the names of bands that fit my criteria.  The older and more obscure, the better.

I feel bad for letting this thing die, so hello.

EPISODE 6: Vaura's Selenelion
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=37238" rel="nofollow">

One of progressive metal's more recent supergroups, Vaura includes Kevin Hufnagel from Gorguts, Josh Strawn and Charlie Schmid of Religious To Damn, and Toby Driver (!) of Kayo Dot/Tartar Lamb/Maudlin of the Well/numerous other bands holding up the low end of things.

Their debut Selenelion is pretty eclectic, featuring elements of sludge, death and black metal, lots of jazziness, pretty posty at times.  What stands out to me, though, is that an album with as excellent production as this one does has such a nasty bass tone throughout.  Love it!  Toby Driver is a brilliant composer and guitarist, but I'd always had a soft spot for his bass playing.

Until next whenever, keep in mind that GLUBHUHKGHAHGA

EPISODE 7: HUGHSCORE

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1198" rel="nofollow">

Due to popular demand, this resurrection episode goes out to Hugh Hopper and the fuzzy goodness of his entire legendary career!  I've arbitrarily decided to share some Hughscore.  This great group started off basically as a collaboration between Hopper and the band Caveman Shoestore.  Simultaneously smooth and gritty, Hugh Hopper's tones have never been more suitable for my blong.

Enjoy, and all you bass players out there remember that sh*tty is pretty!

EPISODE 8: WEIDORJE
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=5596" rel="nofollow">

I know what you're probably thinking, 7 episodes of this thing and not a single Zeuhl album?  Blasphemy!  So, here you go.  I'm sure for many people, including myself, the relatively accessible Weidorje (1978) was their first foray into the Zeuhl world.  And yet, it's still got some ugly, grungy, stinky bass sound just like I love to love.  The reason for that, of course, is the masterful Bernard Paganotti, formerly of Magma and who would later go on to form Paga Group.  Listen to that glorious farty goodness, and enjoy.

See you next week.

Yeah - Hugh Hopper can sound ugly - especially when he has his fuzz-bass lines at high speed, which sounds like amateurish acid-guitar and harsh as all hell.
Also thought Nic Potter's bass on VDGG's 'The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other' sounds really grubby.
Not so much Prog, but, Jack Bruce's tone in Cream is as thick and dirty as it gets. Love it though.

As always when listening to Paganotti, I just zeuhled my pants.
