yes very difficult, so I'll forgo the old stuff; for new I'd say Philharmonie's Le Dernier Mot is easily among the ten best (it's instrumental so there isn't any actual 'language'  Smile )

As a frog, I can say that Magma dosesn't use the french lanaguage. Bless them ! The words in french prog are terribly cheesy. Happy the one that doesn't understand.
For ANGE's EMILE JACOTEY(1974), it's ok with words and music.

For me the best french prog albums (even if not really prog in music books) are MELODY NELSON et L'HOMME A TETE DE CHOU by SERGE GAINSBOURG.

I will also add these two most recent ones by SEBASTIEN TELLIER : L'INCROYABLE VERITE (Close to Canterbury and Bobby Wyatt),  and KATERINE : LES CREATURES (with a free jazz mood)

What makes this tougher is that you are asking for best French language album. That excludes a lot of my favourite French bands like Zao,Magma,Eider Stelaire,One Shot,Nebelnest,Eskaton,Shub Niggurath,Heldon,Rahmann,Weidorje and on and on.
A good question though. Here's five that i like a lot.

Moving Gelatine Plates-Self-titled
Ange-Caricatures
Maldoror-L'arbre-Cimitiere
Etron Fou Leloubans-Les Poumons Gonfles

I think it all too easy to fall into the trap of nationalistic stereotypes when it comes to identifying artists or albums that we like to think are representative of the best of a country's contribution to Prog. That said, I do feel that French Prog does have a theatrical, dramatic and melodramatic bent as exemplified by Ange, Arachnoid, Halloween, Magma and Shylock etc For me the 'best' album I've heard (and that means I've heard very little French Prog) might be Au-dela Du Delire by Ange

My favourite for the time being - and has been for the past couple of years, is Nil's masterpiece Nil Novo Sub Sole. I saw John mentioning earlier, but man this album just doesn't get the attention it truly deserves. One of the best progressive albums during the past 25 years and I'm not even exaggerating here people.
Other faves of mine:
Arachnoid
Bernard Perganotti - Paga
Triode - On n'a pas fini d'avoir tout vu
Catherine Ribeiro + Les Alpes - Paix

A bit of a let down here, because many of my fave French artists recorded instrumental albums - at least they didn't exactly use their native tongue. Acts like Igor Wakhewicth (I'll never learn to spell that), Laurent Thibault and Magma.

Anyone heard about Christian Szajner from Switzerland ? He recorded the album in english : "Brute Reason" with Howard Devoto in the early eighties. He also invented the laser harp. I met him last year in Paris in  a museum. He's a kind of painter now.

note my prog folk slant when considering these recommendations

Alan Stivell's "Reflets" comes to mind - celtic prog folk, but some sung in English and some in Breton
Pentacle "Le Clef des Songes"
Garolou - Garolou
Motis - Prince Des Hauteurs
Dan Ar Braz - Allez dire a la Ville
Tri Yann - Belle et Rebelle

There is no best French Prog album.  I have a big French Prog collection as that used to be what I primarily collected.  Most of my favourites are instrumental, and Art Zoyd's Generation Sans Futur is a particular favourite (has some vocals, but... and Igor Wakhevitch made other faves).  In terms of ones with French lyrics though, the first to spring to my mind is Pascal Duffard's Dieu est Fou.

I'm quite fond of Nemo, Jean Luc Ponty, Dun, Nil, Thork, Moving Gelatin Plates, and to a much lesser extent Clearlight and Minimum Vital.  Shylock, and some of the ones listed above, don't actually use the French language at all, which I think was a requirement of the topic.  Or was it?

Anyway, I'm hard pressed to pick one.  Oh, and I also love Harmonium.

Guess I should probably try out Ange at some point, eh?  Embarrassed

Agreed.

I was also going to mention things like Mona Lisa, Alan Stivell, Malecorne, Machiavel (not sure if this was part Italian or not), Atoll, and the Heldon factory.

All in all, Alan Stivell is the tough one, because he is not "new age" and he mixes everything, and the kitchen spoons in what he does, but the best part of his work for me, is when he uses a rock band ... it is fantastic ... and quite moving and powerful and explosive. But I think that for many folks here the idea of a Celtic Harp on top of all that electronic and hardcore electric stuff like "progressive" kills the definition for them ... and for an example ... listen to the album "Again" ... which I think was made to try and get some rock audiences to listen to it some more. It's magnificent ... but again, it is also eccentric, Celtic, and off the wall, and it does not stop!

yes Alan Stivell in rock.  I saw him live on my birthday years ago with a band.  He opened with Brian Boru, excellent!  Which rock album of his would you recommend the most?

I have few albums from France (or Quebec), and fewer that have vocals at all, much less in French.  In fact I believe the only album I have that qualifies is Halloween Merlin.  Possibly I should work on changing that!
(Love Merlin, by the way!)

Let me look at my album list and come back.

"Again" for sure ... but a couple of the live albums are very good as well. I'm thinking "Before Landing", but that is also a very political album that will turn off all the new age'ing progressive folks.

Remember one slight thing ... Emile Jacotey was done ... what ... almost 20 years before Roger Waters did his own version? ... and I like Ange's version better ... it was more honest and did not have to be flashy and pull out all the haters in suburbia, or cynics,  that Roger does. Doesn't mean I did not like Roger's -- it's a magnificent album ... but the whole thing was already in my heart by Ange.

One other thing about Emile Jacotey ... I was born in 1950. That generation born in Europe and the one born right after the war in the late 40's, is still highly influenced by the envents on WW2. And something like Ange's makes a lot of sense to us born in Europe. It will not make that much sense to many of the folks born in America, for example, just like Roger's album wouldn't either ... but we loved a few hits and cuts!

In that sense, Ange was much more important ... "Au Dela Du Delire" puts a perspective on the "fantasy" and "story thing" that Genesis did not, and then they placed the efforts on an album that goes visceral about war ... specially with "Ego et Deus", as a title for a piece .... which is not something that is not exactly comprehensible to most folks ... it's like asking ... what the hell is this all about? Ego or God ... and of course, the English, such strong imperialists will get very defensive about that and Americans will tell you ... what are you talking about? Btw, now check out the same type of political/social comments in "ITCOTKC" ... almost identical!

Ange - Au Delà du Délire
Really original album.

I actually think that "Caricatures" was just as original ... and then "Le Cemetiere des Harlequins" ... all in all, I think they cleared up something that made it different from Genesis ... and all you have to hear is Dechamps whispering to you ... ecoute ... ecoute ... even in the live version on Tome VI ... and you know that this is about acting ... not just a song, as it became later. You can hear the strength of this acting/story right there ... and Peter Gabriel kinda gave up after Lamb ... and just did songs.

In many ways, Ange had an insipiration that was not show and tell, and then it appeared that Genesis was neither literary, or historical ... since it not only stopped, Peter did not extend it! Ange, with DEchamps, never quit and even though some of us might find the later stuff not as strong and quite diluted. I think that they ended up disillusioned more than once, when seeing other bands doing much inferior work, but getting more recognition ... that's when bands end up falling apart.

I also thought that when the lyrics in "Lamb" finally got to rock'n'roll that the meaning of the whole thing kinda went south for me, and that was the least favorite piece in that album for me ... and the one that lowered the value of the whole piece for me! Ange, at least, never did that or quit like that. They tried to continue what would be considered a story line with "Par Les Fils de Mandrin" ... which I thought was kinda cool and a finger to Genesis ... here is a story for your children! and fingeryou for your inspiration!

But, in the end, I don't really like comparing these things much. But I do think that the French, with their "laissez-faire", or "I don't give a poop attitude" towards so many and so much of the art scenes, would help create more individualistic things ... and I really felt they did ... in many ways, by the time you hear Stivell, Heldon, Ange, Malicorne, Gong, that unreal off-off-kilter jazz scene and then the pop music scene, you have one of the most wide and wild scenes around. By comparison, London was way too commercially minded and too "composed" to be as original!

I'm buying plenty of NF music myself right now so I know your dilemma but I'd seriously recommend Harmonium - Si On Avait Besoin D'Une Cinquième Saison. It's fantastic.

Hopefully I'll see you at NF.

Well there's plenty of good recommendations here to remedy that!

Yeah, hope to meet you there! Maybe we should wear nametags with our PE and PA usernames, instead of our real names!

Damn there are so many, but I'll be dishing out a few faves of mine who also happen to be somewhat obscure and in dire need of somebody out there listening to them once in a while. Music is like that..:

Pick oneLOL
Seriously though - I would have a very hard time singling out which one I think is the 'best' among these albums. All of them are special to me in their own way. Heldon's Stand By means the world to me - and I'd love to go out swinging to that album.
Anywho - I've probably forgotten about a fair few artists here - oh yeah now that I think of it: Magma and Jean Cohen-SolalEmbarrassed

Eskaton is the best french language french band I've heard. You could seriously throw a dance party with 4 visions and cause mass concussions by the end of it trying to keep up. I need to listen to the rest of these. Is there a decent channel to find/purchase them? I've had to 'obtain' several because they aren't even out anymore, including the aforementioned Eskaton.

What is the best french-languaged prog album of all time ?

As many have already mentioned  the franch-languaged aspect excludes plenty of favorites. No Magma, Igor Igor Wakhevitch, Art Zoyd, Zao, Lard Free, Cos, Moving Gelatine Plates  mm... either sings in other or made up languages, wordless vocals, just grunts or doesn't sing at all.

Eskaton , Ange, Catherine Ribeiro, Brigitte Fontaine, Gerard Manset...  can't decide yet.

The Gainbourg's Melody Nelson is probably the best french pop prog album. Duffard and Fontaine are not far. Maybe the first Dick Annegarn's album and the Katerine's "Les Creatures" belong here two.

I just listened to the new Ange album, Moyen-age, a couple of times, and though it's a bit different than their old stuff, I would probably rank it among their best albums, Guet Apens and Au-Dela Du Delire, it's that good. It has a near 50 minute suite on it, and that's not even the entire album, though the suite is broken down into 8 tracks.

this one is a good contender:

unfortunately one of the best tracks on the album (Crystal Palace) has not been uploaded to YouTube yet. this album is one of my favorites of all time; I even love a song like the heavy rock 'n roll number "22 Broad Street"

Heard it a couple of times as well. I find it a bit of a letdown after the previous album.

Really, I didn't really like their last album much at all. To each their own I guess. But maybe I just need to listen again, thoughI really love this new one.
