not sure if this is worth a thread, but i'm new around here so please forgive any lack of nettiquette. i was browsing through the prog archives and came across Rod Argent - listed under crossover prog. Way back in 1972, at the tender age of 9 i remember buying 'Hold your head up' my first ever single (7" black vinyl disc for all you youngsters), running home with it and playing it endlessly on the old travel turntable that my folks had. I thought it was the best thing i'd ever heard and when two of my friends came round I insisted they listen to it. naturally they thought i was nuts and that it was rubbish. Of course i am older and wiser now. I don't impose my taste on my friends for a start, but anyway this is just a misty eyed ramble by way of saying i just realised i was buying prog related records before i even realised it. What about you, what was your first musical purchase? and does it still rate listening to today? (btw i should mention that subsequent purchases of Slade, Sweet and Suzi quatro demonstrate that Argent might have been a fluke) |

| I think it must have been some cd's of Iron Maiden. Among my first vinyls (I've been collecting since age 15) are Jehtro Tull, Iron Maiden, Camel and Kayak. |

The first album I got I didn't actually buy but was given by my cousin. It was a cassette with "Bad" by Michael Jackson on it.

my first buy was Fragile by Yes. Didn't know anything about prog rock, just heard South Side of The Sky from radio and it totally blew my mind! brand new record player (my first) + Fragile = what a way to start  |

Now that's a brain strain for sure. The chances are I was around 9 or 10 at the time (1967-68) and it was probably a 45 (remember those?) Most likely a Beatles single. But my first album was ELP's debut, that I know for sure. I heard it over the summer at a youth drop in centre that they ran at the local high school. The older brother of a girl I knew had brought it in and from the moment I heard The Three Fates prog had sunk it's sharp teeth firmly into my soul. There was no looking back. Once my older cousin (4 years my senior) learned I was starting to get into music, she opened the flood gates by introducing me to the likes of Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Steppenwolf and I hooked for life. 40 some odd years later and my collection exceeds 1000 vinyls and over 4000 CD's. Not one of the worse addictions to have but I'm starting to realize that it might be time to pare back. I'm not going to even pretend to be cool. Fairly certain that the first music I purchased would have been a 45 of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Elton John and Kiki Dee. First album, if memory serves, was probably KISS Alive (the first one). My first single was 'Ballroom Blitz' Sweet I was about 8 or 9 and I bought it at Woolworths and I am not at all embarrassed because it was the start of a long relationship with music. And its a good single! My first Album was 'Ride a White Swan' by T Rex and it was a bit of a surprise as I was expecting more T Rex Pop but got hippy dippy electro folk. It grew on me quite quickly.My first tape was 24 Carat Purple. ------------- Help me I'm falling! |

I don't have such a strong memory of buying my first LP for some reason, but it was almost certainly Elton John's Captain Fantastic. (Which I still like today )

My first album that I bought from my own money was back in the mid 80ies: Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear. It's still one of my favourite albums.

I usually discount The Batman Theme Played by The Markettes when I was six and did not know what music was. I did, however, know Batman. This was the original series starring Adam West, by the way. My real first purchase came when I was fourteen, I think. I had been avidly listening to AM radio for some years, and so had a good sense of what was out there, at least what hit the mainstream (at a time when the likes of Yes, ELP, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, etc were the mainstream). Actually, the purchase was of two records: Burn by Deep Purple and Caribou by Elton John. The latter did little for me, although I really liked Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me (I have come to appreciate Sir Elton in later years), but the Deep Purple just knocked my socks off. As my sister said, "Oh, you like the hairy guys." I replied, "Yeah!" My very first tape was Beatles' Revolver, at the age of 10, I believe. That was given to me by my dad, a day after he rented "The Compleat Beatles" VHS which caught my attention in a very strange yet awesome way. The first tape I have the memory of buying by myself was "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn", two years later. I think it was either Green Day - American Idiot or Bink 182 - Greatest Hits. I wish I was joking... The first album I bought which I still listen to is "Gorillaz - Demon Days". Definitely not prog but a really great and sometimes beautiful sort of alternative rock hip-hop album. I went through some years where I was prog-elitist and didn't listen to it, but one day I just decided to listen to it again and it's great! The first albums I bought that are on this site where, I think, Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos and The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath.

The first one I went to the store with my mom and bought myself was a Christian pop album from a band called FFH....  And I grew up listening to Matchbox Twenty, Collective Soul, DMB, Creed, Nickelback, and Three Days grace. Then I got into bands like Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, and Metallica. Then my first prog album was Systematic Chaos. Glad I've come a long way.

My first two purchases were Heart's Dreamboat Annie and Paul McCartney and Wings Band on the Run. Both I still enjoy listening to now. The first prog albums I got were Supertramp's Crime of the Century and Yes' Fragile. ------------- A GREAT YEAR FOR PROG!!! |

hmm first purchase or first prog purchase? Well the first album I guess I really bought was Beatle's 1 thingie when I was 7. If my memory serves me right it was bought in a gas station on the outskirts of Rome (I lived in Italy back then- good fun). Being a child of a progger (well sort of progger) dad when I started getting into prog I had my own CD shelf to look around in. Though I got into prog come to think about it when a friend of mine gave me "Fragile" on CD. But King Crimson, VDGG, GG, Genesis, ELP, Gong, it was all there. It was really great to find a CD of band I've just read about on the internetz or something and be able to talk to me dad about it and all. I think I've surpassed him in the prog field by far though! Even the stuff I listen to now is way too far out. ------------- There be dragons |

Ballroom Blitz was the first single I bought as well. My parents disapproved and wondered why I couldn't have bought something nice instead.The Sweet were a great band. I own about 3 or 4 cd's and they get played! My first cassette purchase (£2) was ELP - Pictures At An Exhibition. Absolutely hated it. Anyway for some reason I persevered with ELP and eventually became a long 'suffering' fan.

The very first album that I bought with my own money (newspaper route) was Alice Cooper's Killer in 1972.
