Alright, so I had always strongly disliked David Byrne's voice and most of the material from Talking Heads that I had ever heard (radio singles). I've just always been really picky about vocals, only really loving a handful of singers. Recently, however, I've opened up into appreciating a lot of unorthodox singing and use of the human voice (i.e. Captain Beefheart, Cardiacs, Battles, Of Montreal). I've also had a few friends (also fans of prog and jazz) that have cited Talking Heads as being their favorite band, saying how revolutionary and ingenious their music is. So now that I'm pretty much over my past stigma against "weird" singing (for lack of better words), I'd like some recommendations on where to start with their discography. I now love the songs "Burning Down the House" and "Once In a Lifetime", but I want to hear more and don't know where to begin.Wacko

Remain in Light is one of my favorite albums.  I'd say it's a good starting point.

Would recommend both Fear of Music and Remain in Light, the only ones I know and both great albums.

More songs about Buildings and Food first.....it is a good cross of the early pop and introduces some funky grooves like the cover " Take Me To The River"

Then Fear of Music.....once hooked everything else will fall into place. Also check out Eno/Byrne - My Life in the Bush Of Ghosts. The late Rick Wright put that one in his top 10 of all time.....you will see why

Man....enjoy....you have it all to discoverHeadbanger

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Halfway through Remain in Light and heavily digging it. I'll check out Fear of Music, More Songs About Buildings and Food, and some live stuff, in that order.

I forgot to mention that one of the reasons I really wanted to give Talking Heads a go was because I heard a single from David Byrne with Brian Eno released not too long ago called "Strange Overtones" on the radio. Has anyone else heard this track? It's so feel-good, it just demands that you bob your head. Lyrics and beat are simply perfect.

I agree, I always liked their second album and Bush of Ghosts is excellent.

If you're going to get new hard copies you've picked the right time to get into the band.  The whole catalog of studio albums have been remastered with stereo on one side and a 5.1 surround dvd mix on the other done by band member Jerry Harrison.  Also each have at least a couple of bonus videos. The re release of The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads is jammed with extra tracks and is a really good collection of songs from my favorite period of the band which is the More Songs through Remain In Light period.

The Stop Making Sense movie got high praise when it came out, deservedly so.  A really good show.  A really big suit.  And you may say to yourself, can this suit be taken in a little...

By the way to fans already, who like Remain In Light as much as I do, you'll want to get this:

Hard copies are scarce, but I see you can buy it as a download.  I missed out on its CD reissue in 1996, which must have been really limited, but I still have my vinyl.

Looks like you can try out most of this album on the tube.

Remain in Light certainly.  Its probably the only music with vocals for more than a minute or two that I listen to.  I'm not a fan of pop music, but they just do it correctly.  I haven't heard other albums and was actually introduced to Remain in Light via a fantastic Phish show in which they played the entire album straight through.  The weirder second half of the album might be better when Phish does it actually.....

I really liked Talking Heads up to and including Fear of Music but after that Byrne (found) the plot and they lost their neurotic edginess. The marriage of white and black music styles as attempted by Remain In Light and Speaking in Tongues sound about as passionate as a pre-nuptial agreement and horribly dated now to my ears.

Did the days did not go by well for you?  Did you not travel down the quiet road?

I'd say that more about Speaking In TongueTongue.

A couple their best IMO:

I've got that one from '87 and Walk On Water from '90.  Neither quite as good as his first.

That's interesting, I would have suspected you a fan after all the other stuff you've said you are into.

Which three tracks by the way?  Just the first three?  Or do you mean you've never watched more that three tracks at one time? LOL

I went through a post-punk phase in my life so I understand Talking Heads, and David Byrne's collaboration with Brian Eno perfectly.  Wouldn't expect other progheads to feel the same. Their style is not for your average prog fan.

^ I wonder how many prog fans listen only to prog. That would seem so limiting..

I'd probably flip out and stop listening to music if I could only listen to prog.  Gotta keep it varied (though I'll admit I first checked out Talking Heads because of Belew's involvement on Remain in Light after listening to King Crimson).

Well, you only have to go to the what are you listening to thread to see that a lot of us have diverse tastes in music.  Still a good 90-95% is prog and this site has made it "worse" than it might normally be.  But I was very much your typical prog fan when I got into TH and I still consider them to be prog anyway.

Funny, I always considered TH to be proggy.  First album I heard was More Songs About....  Understand, this was in real time, i.e., 1978.  Granted, they weren't Yes or ELP, but then Yes or ELP weren't Yes or ELP by that time.  The Eno angle.  The Fripp angle.  Hell, listen to Discipline.  Listen to Before and After Science.  It's what prog had become.  Listen to Fear of Music.  Bow down.  Listen to Remain In Light...it's Miles Davis On The Corner meets New Wave.  Bow down.

Well put. I even loved Little Creatures from 85'. I only started to struggle with true Stories and Naked. But yes the whole association of Eno in the 80's, Belew - I am a big KC 80's fan.....Who said prog had died!!Approve

it often revolves around rock music (not that many country music, classical music, traditional music/world music, black music (funk, gospel, reggae, ska, gospel), flamenco, tango, calypso, afrobeat, jazz (swing era)).
