Can anyone recommend me some more latin jazz oriented fusion jazz. I already have a slew of RTF, Al Di Meola/Paco, and Mahavishnu related music. I'm looking to go a little bit deeper. Is anyone familiar with drummer Horacio "El Negro" hernandez and his music? Also, I remember a while back there was a group with Chic Corea, Dave Weckl, and Frank Gambale does anyone know the name of this group? The band you refer to with Corea, Weckl & Gambale is "Chick Corea Elektric Band". Michael Shrieve's Spellbinder Alex Acuna

hmm, I cant think of anything right now, Im at school and I dont have my collection with me. the first 2 RTF albums came to mind, but you probably have them.

Hi,
I would go after Egberto Gismonti ... some of the jazz stuff they have is insane ... not exactly guitar driven, but ... if you can't listen to music, fusion won't mater to you! Sanfona is a nice one to catch.
His stuff with the Academia das Dancas is usually more band oriented and strong. It is very different from his solo stuff. The album's 2nd LP is not as wide as this one and is all solo.
I just heard some nice stuff from Chuck Mangione and then Michael Urbaniak (Fusion 3) ... that was pretty impressive ... and enjoyable. Not sure if "latin" ... means that much to me ... music is music and it doesn't matter if it is done in Argentina, China or Norway ... and sometimes we're only differentiating it because of teh maracas ... but some Brazilian rhythms are cool ... You might want to give a listen to some Marc Antoine. It's not fusion but the I find the Latin rhythms to be really nice (played loud). |

I would agree, Gismonti is devilishly creative. On the superb Friday Night in San Francisco (with Al Dimeola, John McLaughlin and Paco DeLucia), DeLucia and McLaughlin play a version of Gismonti's "Frevo Rasgado":
If you haven't listened to Friday Night in San Francisco yet, I would definitely suggest it. There is also a blistering version of "Mediterranean Sundance" (with Dimeola and Delucia):

Not really jazz-fusion but jazz elements combined with prog/folk, Supay is from Peru and does catch the Andean ambience. Very well done and refreshing.

The one that comes instantly to mind (other than Santana) is Spyro Gyra (not the Canterbury prog folk band),
but I'm definitely not a fan of that schmaltz ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Thank you for the rec. I know of Spyra Gyro through Dream Theater's music. Could you point me in the right direction (in terms of albums) I've listened to the ones released around the time of "Images & Words" but did not find anything interesting. Thank you all for the post, I will be checking/listening to every recommendation. Please keep them coming.! Spyro Gyra's recommendations :
- Morning dance (has some caribbean influence),
- City Kids (features jazz monsters like Eddie Gomez, Will Lee, Manolo Badrena, Steve Gadd, Marcus Miller, Hiram Bullock, ),
- Incognito (same remark as above, but Steve Gadd is on ALL tracks this time)
- Access all areas (an excellent live recording)
- Alternating currents (the first album to feature Ritchie Morales (brecker brothers) on drums)
- Breakout
- Point of view
Their vibraphone player released an album with Dave Weckl on drums, "natural selection" and founded the Caribbean Jazz Project (see the youtube sample in my previous post)
