One of my old friends introduced me to Gesualdo. I would appreciate any insight anyone can give me into this man's music (we're talking 16th century here). Any particularly good recordings available? He may have been the first prog artist, though decidedly not rock.
If nothing else, I hope to encourage others to listen to his works.

He is known for his madrigals but I strongly recommend his sacred music. I have four albums of his music, but the one that is essential is this :
 Alfred Deller is a legend in the field of vocal music. Harmonia Mundi is a label specializing in Renaissance and Baroque music, and they are a reference in that matter.
Other responsories can be heard on Philippe Herreweghe's interpretetation (the album 'Sabbato Sancto' issued on Harmonia Mundi. Herreweghe is another master in interpreting Renaissance and Baroque music.
For the madrigals, you have the choice between Harmonia Mundi with William Christie and les Arts Florissants or the label L'Oiseau-Lyre with Anthony Rooley and the Consort of Musicke. ------------- "Magma was the very first gothic rock band" (Didier Lockwood) |

Gesualdo was way ahead of his time; his harmonies are very modern.he is unfortunately not very well known. another composer which I also highly recommend but who is even less known than Gesualde is Barbara Strozzi. she was born 6 years after Gedsualdo's death. the reason I mention her is that, like Gesualdo, she was ahead of her time, and her melodic lines were just wonderful. here an example of her music: here the album this was taken from:  -------------  A shot of me as High Priestess of Gaia during our fall festival. I have bought recently this collection of madrigals :
 The label, Ambronay, is in reference to the village of the same name in France. The recordings are performed in the abbey of this village. La cappella mediterranea will be performing music by Handel, Strozzi, Couperin... in april in France, with one date in...Ambronay ! ------------- "Magma was the very first gothic rock band" (Didier Lockwood) |
