I would never do so except for the time I did Ann Coulter briefly for fun, but I see some guys doing this a bit.

I don't consider my avatar a representation of who I am, more as something visually recognisable and interesting, and unique enough that people will know it's me when they see it beside a post.
This avatar, btw, is an image from a game I am currently programming.

Look I'm not just a pencil-drawn woodland creature. I have a personality too. And at the moment after the distinctly dull week I have had I may actually be a Groundhog after all.

I'm a 22 year old male living in Indiana, and I like Miles Davis so I thought I'd put a cool picture of him as my avatar. I have had previous avatars, though. In spite of this, I have faith that my identity as a person does not alter significantly each time I change avatars.

When I use a female avatar, it's for three reasons: 1) Trying to confuse other forumites (luckily, it never worked)
2) Coping with my inner female part. I always wondered what I would have looked like if I had been born as a girl (But looking at one of my cousin gives me a rather good idea).
3) A friendly warning to women: I may borrow dresses and make-up from you.

On a semi related note: I remember hearing an official stat that something like 80(ish)% of online role playing game users are male but about 50% of all users have female characters.
I'm sure that has something to do with something and means something in terms of gender roles and equality but who really cares right?

Conversely, one could ask why, if you are a man, would you use the picture of another man as your avatar? Not inferring anything, really, I am sure the reasons are just as multifarious.

Yes, my avatar is a woman. It's a picture that looks pretty, but not too sexy. People realize, that I'm a fan of her music, and that's a message I want to be sending. Also, I don't want to go changing it because I believe that some of you might recognize me from it. On another forum I use a drawing of a teenage mutant ninja turtle, which is who I actually am.
I play rpgs as a woman because men are always nothing but boring fighters and I usually want to concentrate on more feminine qualities like limberness, wits and dish washing.
