I was thinking it would be helpful if PA users, in addition to rating albums, could rate artists and that rating would be displayed next to the artist name in the artist listings. Anyone agree?

I do not know by which criteria. I think an artist rating would only reflect, how many fanboys (-girls) are here for a specific artist.

Doesn't that apply to album ratings also?

It does, but abuse can normally be weeded out.

Album rating means you have to connect up more than one part of the brain to make up your mind. Artists, like all other human beings, is firstly judged on first impression and then the opinions may be modified. That only happens in rare cases though.

What about a popularity rating next to the artist name instead?

PA has some sort of popularity rating because there's a list of popular artists on the PA homepage. The purpose of my suggestion is to make the artist listings more useful. Right now they display the artist name, style, and country. Some sort of artist rating would be helpful and now that I think of it, a starting year or year range would be helpful also.

At least there is one criteria for album rating: I have to listen to the full album from beginning to end before I rate it. Otherwise I would not rate it. But for artists I do not know the criteria when to rate: also after listening to at least one album? Or after 10 seconds?

I think the only way an artist rating could make any sort of sense would be some sort of cumulative-album-rating (i.e. all ratings for all of artists' albums combined), but even that would potentially be nonsensical and worthless as a rating...

I don't see the point. It would just lead to another top list with all those artists that we all know already (Crimson, Floyd, Yes, Genesis, ELP,...)
I would rather invest a bit more brain-time in ways to make obscure or few-rated albums more visible.

I don't think so - we have enough rows here as it is, without adding to the melting pot

No!
And here's why:
1. Some bands which are good to say the least, will get lower rating because they shifted towards pop at some stage in their career (for example Genesis). When you calculate the average you will get undeservedly low results.
2. It will cause more flame wars on forums by intellectually challenged participants. (this is not pointed towards you Carvin, but you'd be surprised to see how often dumb arguments are occurring here)
3. No merit. While there's a degree of useful information in looking at the album's ratings to check which album I should check first by a certain band, such a rating is absolutely useless for a whole band, unless there's a through review of an entire career, which basically yields to:
4. Knowing that average PA rating of King Crimson is 3.84 and of Dream Theater 4.11 won't make us any smarter.

Not a bad idea.
I guess we all have our views who are great artists and who are average (below average etc). For example, I would not rate many JETHRO TULL albums with 5 stars, but JT for me is a 5-star band.

Please ... NO.
It will become just a popularity contest and in the end, we will believe might makes right like we do already in this commercial junkyard ... where the "volume" is determining how good something is.
Pretty soon Comcast is going to tell us what movies to watch, and what bands to listen to ... and we're going to be good ninnies because we wouldn't want to be considered "politically incorrect" because of their advertising or news brainwash! And the High Court of the land doesn't care!
Where does it stop, is my only question.

I can't imagine this having been usefull to me when I discovered this site, and I can't see myself wanting to rate whole artists, that seems just wrong.
for example: do I rate Genesis based on their 70s output or their pop career? do I balance it out and give them 2 or 3 stars when their 70s output would get a 4 or a 5?

No kidding!
Up until 5 years ago, IMDB was not exactly a fanboy site ... it was more for the insdustry folks needing various information and what not ... but since it went "professional" and charges an amount every month, it went commercial in the worst way ... and those ratings are for anyone that his the website and it was found one time that there was a bot that voted every time the page was opened ... even if you came back to it after going to Espn, or Cnn.
But, that is only visible in the open/popular version. The professional and paid version that I have has no advertisements and is pretty much chocolate and vanilla ... and I like it that way!

I don't like this idea.... Better to rate someone, anyone based on their product, not themselves....
